  • Effects of air temperature and 50% shading for 20 days at each growth stages (from 33days before heading, from heading and from 20days after heading) on the productivity of Tongil (IR667-Suweon 214) and Jinheung rice (Oriza sativa.) were as follows. 1. Shading decreased yield by 48, 98 and 18% for Tongil and 73.71 and 12% for Jinheung during ear formation, heading and milky stage, respectively. 2. Shading most severely affected filled-grain ratio in both varieties except shading during milky stage of Jinheung that more affected grain weight. 3. Optimum mean air temperature for maximum crop growth rate appears to be $25^{\circ}C$ and clitical temperature $22^{\circ}C$ for Tongil but these for Jinheung seem to be lower. Solar radiation greater than $300cal/cm^2$ day appears to be enough. 4. Maximum crop growth rate of Tongil always advanced that of Jinheung. 5. Tropical Tongil variety appeared to be more tolerant to high temperature and low solar radiation before heading than temperate Jinheung. Thus Tongil will be more productively adapted to the high temperature-low solar radiation period in rice season which mostly overlaps with ear formation stage.

  • A field experiment was conducted to know the feasibility of direct-seeded rice. Dry seeds of a Japonica type rice variety, Donghaebyeo, was sown from May 10 to June 20 at the 10-day intervals. The number of days from seeding to emergence decreased as planting date delayed; 13, 12, 10, 9, and 7 days at May 10, May 20. May 30. and June 10 seedings, respectively. The number of maximum tillers per ㎡ was about 700-800 at all the seeding dates and effective tiller ratio ranged 40-45%. The number of days from seeding to heading decreased as seeding date delayed; from 97 days at May 10 planting to 71 days at June 20 planting. The cumulative effective temperature (mean air temperature-15$^{\circ}C$) from seeding to heading was fairly constant having 870$^{\circ}C$ with 2.3% C.V. The number of panicles per unit area at June 10 planting was higher than that of other planting dates. Panicle length and the number of spikelets per panicle tended to decrease as seeding date delayed. The number of spikelets per unit area, 1000-grain weight, and grain yield were similar among the seeding dates except June 20 seeding. At the June 20 seeding the number of spikelets and grain yield were much lower, but 1000-grain weight was higher compared with other seeding dates. Grain fertility and percent ripened grains was similar among all seeding dates.

  • Varietal differences of grain filling duration and rate are generally recognized in rice (Oryza sativa L.). But the differences of grain filling characteristics between the parts within a panicle might be present since it takes 6-8 days to finish anthesis in a panicle. To elucidate this, 6 Japonica and 6 Japonica/Indica varieties were grown under three nitrogen levels at the Experimental Farm of Chungbuk National University in 1986, and grain filling characteristics of top, middle and bottom parts of a panicle were analyzed. Rice grain filling duration could be divided into 3 phases, i.e., Lag phase(LP) of 5 days after heading. Linear increasing period (LIP) of 5-20 days after heading and Late filling period (LFP) thereafter. Grain weight difference between the panicle parts was greater during LIP in all the varieties and was decreased during LFP. The difference was greater in Japonica/Indica varieties. Samgangbyeo and Seomjinbyeo had the shortest and the longest grain filling durations with 22.6 and 37.1 days, respectively. In average, grain filling duration of the bottom part of a panicle was 1-2 days shorter than that of top or middle part. The differences were negligible in Daecheongbyeo, Taebaegbyeo and Milyang 23, while it was greater in Tongil with 4.9 days. Grain filling rates were ranged from 0.612 to 1.097 mgㆍgrain$^{-1}$ㆍday$^{-1}$ㆍMilyang 23 showed the lowest rate with 0.612-0.682 mgㆍgrain$^{-1}$ㆍday$^{-1}$, while the rates of Baegyangbyeo, Yongmoonbyeo, Samgangbyeo, Nongbaeg and Daeseongbyeo were about 1 mgㆍgrain$^{-1}$ㆍday$^{-1}$ㆍGrain filling rate of bottom part of a panicle was lower than that of top or middle part. The difference was samll in Nongbaeg and Daeseongbyeo, while it was the greatest in Tongil with 0.222 mgㆍgrain$^{-1}$ㆍday$^{-1}$. Grain filling duration and rate were not afftected by nitrogen level, but varietal and spatial differences of grain filling characteristics were highly significant. However, the spatial difference of grain filling rates within a variety was not significant. Grain filling characteristics of each part of a panicle were significantly correlated (r=0.7207-0.9879) with those of a whole panicle.

  • Super-giant-embryo mutant line (Hwacheong-ge$^s$) with high nutritional quality was developed from Hwacheongbyeo, a Korean Japonica cultivar. Grain weight of brown rice of Hwacheong-ge$^s$ line was lighter than of Hwacheongbyeo. However, embryo dry weight of the line was 3.22 times heavier than that of Hwacheongbyeo on the single grain base. Hwacheong-ge$^s$ line showed higher protein(8.99%) than the original variety(7.39%), without changes in storage protein. In amino acid composition, lysine content was greatly increased in the mutant, while the contents of methionine, serine and tyrosine were slightly decreased as compared with the original one. Lipid content of Hwacheong-ge$^s$ line was 1.5 times higher compared with that of Hwacheongbyeo. The contents of Vitamin Bl, B2, and E(${\alpha}$-tocopherol) were also greatly increased in Hwacheong-ge$^s$line. The grain yields of the mutant lines ranged from 69.2% to 78.8% compared with that of Hwacheongbyeo, 556kg /10a. Most of the mutant lines of M4 generation were homogeneous for growth characters, and some of them seemed to be readily applicable for farmer's field.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine cutting time on the yield and nutritive value of brittle culm rice. Plant height and number of tiller were significantly different between variety and cutting time, and regrowth plant height and rate of regrowth tiller were tall and high at the early cutting. Early cutting increased crude protein, fat and NFE(Nitrogen free extract) content in the harvested foliage but crude fiber and ash content were decreased in the first cutting. Those of second cutting also showed reverse tendency. Fresh and dry matter yield were highest on heading date cutting, and those of KL501 were higher than those of Seomjinbyeo. TDN(Total digestible nutrients) content was higher with earlier cutting for initiated cutting, but that of second cutting was reversed. KL501 showed higher TDN content than Seomjinbyeo did at the any cutting time. TDN yield of heading date cutting was higher than that of the other cutting time.

  • Vinegar is a fermented food product created by fermenting various sugar- and starch-containing ingredients with microorganisms. It contains a variety of organic acids, sugars, amino acids, esters, and other compounds that contribute to its unique sensory properties. Vinegar is known for its potential benefits, including aiding digestion, lowering blood sugar levels, anti-obesity effects, and antioxidant properties. It is also believed to contribute to improving alkaline body conditions. This study was conducted to develop functional dried vinegar powder from naturally fermented vinegars. Unripe apple, brown rice, and black chokeberry (aronia) were fermented using Gluconacetobacter xylinus for 90-180 days. The filtrate vinegar was spray dried with 37.46% maltodextrin, 5% glucose, 1% citric acid, and 0.04% vitamin C. Analysis of the acidity, color difference, water and soluble solid content, and heat stability of dried vinegar (DV) confirmed that spray drying is a suitable method for powder production. Moreover, the DVs exhibited excellent sensory attributes and solubility. Among the DVs, aronia-DV showed the highest 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl and 2,2-azobis (3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) radical scavenging activity (36.7% and 75.3%) and reducing power (0.334) at 0.5 mg/ml concentration, respectively. The nitrite scavenging activity was highest in brown unripe apple-DV, followed by aronia-DV and brown rice-DV. In the anti-thrombosis activity assay, aronia-DV showed the highest prothrombin inhibition. The brown rice-DV exhibited lipid accumulation inhibitory activity in 3T3-L1 adipocytes without cell cytotoxicity. Our results suggest the potential for commercialization of dried vinegar, highlighting its diverse benefits and applications.

  • The selection of salt tolerant rice variety needs an effective method in its testing. Salinity of irrigated water, 0.5% at seedling stage, 0.6% at tillering stage, and 0.9% at panicle formation stage were treated to test salt tolerance of rice using 45 cultivars. At tillering stage, salty water irrigation reduced plant height to 22.6% in early maturing rices(EMR), 30.5% in medium maturing rices(MMR), and 20.9% in medium-late maturing rices(MLMR), and also reduced number of tillers to 11.2% in EMR, 36.2% in MMR, and 36.0% in MLMR compared to rices grown in non-salty water irrigation. At panicle formation stage of rice, salty water irrigation affected plant height and tiller numbers that showed varietal differences. As salt tolerant rice cultivars, Daegwangbyeo, Namweonbyeo, Sinseonchalbyeo, Gyehwabyeo, and Daeyabyeo were selected. Jinbubyeo, Donghaebyeo, and Tamjinbyeo were weak in salty water irrigation.

  • This study was conducted over a 3-year period from 2013 to 2015 in the mid-northern inland, Cheolweon, Korea, to investigate changes in flowering date, daily mean temperature during grain filling, and yield characteristics affected by transplanting date in an early-maturing rice variety, 'Joun'. Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted at four different dates at 15-day interval from May 5 to June 19. Flowering dates were July 16, July 21, July 31, and August 14 when transplanting was performed on May 5, May 20, June 4, and June 19, respectively. Late transplanting resulted in higher daily mean temperature before flowering but late-transplanted rice required fewer days and lower cumulative temperature to reach flowering from transplanting. As transplanting was delayed, daily mean temperature for 40 days after flowering decreased, whereas daily sunshine hours for the same period increased, with a temperature of $24.8^{\circ}C$ and sunshine for 5.8 hours being recorded at the transplanting on May 5, and with a temperature of $21.0^{\circ}C$ and sunshine for 7.7 hours at the transplanting on June 19. With late transplanting, panicles per square meter significantly decreased, whereas spikelets per panicle showed an increasing trend. Regression analysis showed that maximum head rice yield was attained from the transplanting on May 18, for which the flowering date was July 21, and daily mean temperature for 40 days from that flowering date was $24.6^{\circ}C$. A decrease in head rice yield by 5% and 10% of the maximum was observed for rice transplanted on June 6 and June 15, which resulted in flowering dates of August 2 and August 11, respectively, and the daily mean temperatures for 40 days from flowering were 23.2 and $21.7^{\circ}C$, respectively. Therefore, in mid-northern inland, it is recommended to transplant 'Joun' on May 18 to induce flowering on July 21, when grain filling is subjected to a daily mean temperature of $24.6^{\circ}C$ during active filling stage.
