Thiol-Based Peroxidases and Ascorbate Peroxidases: Why Plants Rely on Multiple Peroxidase Systems in the Photosynthesizing Chloroplast?

  • Photosynthesis is a highly robust process allowing for rapid adjustment to changing environmental conditions. The efficient acclimation depends on balanced redox metabolism and control of reactive oxygen species release which triggers signaling cascades and potentially detrimental oxidation reactions. Thiol peroxidases of the peroxiredoxin and glutathione peroxidase type, and ascorbate peroxidases are the main peroxide detoxifying enzymes of the chloroplast. They use different electron donors and are linked to distinct redox networks. In addition, the peroxiredoxins serve functions in redox regulation and retrograde signaling. The complexity of plastid peroxidases is discussed in context of suborganellar localization, substrate preference, metabolic coupling, protein abundance, activity regulation, interactions, signaling functions, and the conditional requirement for high antioxidant capacity. Thus the review provides an opinion on the advantage of linking detoxification of peroxides to different enzymatic systems and implementing mechanisms for their inactivation to enforce signal propagation within and from the chloroplast.

  • 부식제에 의한 식도부식증은 한기의 적절한 치료로써 식도협착증의 발생을 방지할 수 있다. 그러나 부적절한 치료등으로 부득이 기되는 식도협착증의 치료방법으로는 경구적 카테테르법, 인도사법, 무단소식자법, 역행소식자법 등과 같이 각종 boogie를 사용하는 법과 수술적인 요법 등이 사용되고 있다. 저자들은 부식제에 의해 발생한 심한 협착증을 경구적 카테테르법으로 치료에 실패한 환자를 영양섭취를 위한 위루경형성술과 함께 무단소식자법에 의하여 치료에 성공한 2예를 보고하는 바이다.

Femoral Periprosthetic Fractures after Total Knee Arthroplasty: New Surgically Oriented Classification with a Review of Current Treatments

  • Purpose: As the number of total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) increases, the incidence of femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA is also increasing. This review aimed to suggest a new surgically oriented classification system for femoral periprosthetic fractures. Methods: We investigated the classifications, and current treatment trends for femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA by means of a thorough review of the relevant literature. Results: Numerous studies reported good results of surgical treatment with modern fixatives including locking compression plates and retrograde intramedullary nails. However, few classifications of femoral periprosthetic fractures reflect the recent developments in surgical treatment. Conclusions: We recommend that surgical management be considered the first-line treatment for femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA. Our new classification will help in deciding the surgical treatment option for femoral periprosthetic fractures after TKA.

Late Reoperation Following Ligation of the Left Main Coronary Artery in a Patient with Infective Endocarditis

  • We report the case of a female patient who underwent late reoperation following endocarditis surgery. The patient first underwent surgery at 22 years of age for endocarditis with aortic and tricuspid insufficiency. She underwent aortic root replacement with a homograft and tricuspid valve replacement with a tissue valve. Coronary artery bypass using the internal thoracic artery and ligation of the left main coronary artery were performed. Ten years later, failure of the homograft and the tricuspid valve developed. In the second operation, the patient underwent a successful Bentall operation and tricuspid valve replacement with a mechanical valve under deep hypothermia and retrograde cold cardioplegia without drainage.

Minimizing tissue damage due to filler injection with systemic hyperbaric oxygen therapy

  • Recently, there is a growing interest of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in many fields of medicine. We had a 43-year-old female patient presented with severe necrosis of the nose, philtrum, and upper lip due to retrograde arterial occlusion after nasolabial fold hyaluronic acid filler injection. Our patient went through 43 sessions of systemic hyperbaric oxygen therapy from December 2, 2017 to January 18, 2018. We administered 2.8 atmosphere absolute (ATA) for 135 minutes in the first session and the remaining sessions consisted of 2.0 ATA for 110 minutes. In reporting this case, we wish to provide a warning regarding the latent risk of filler injections and share our experience about minimizing soft tissue damage in the early stages with systemic hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

  • Patients with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), the retrograde flow of urine from the bladder to the kidney, are known to experience renal scarring; this results in the worsening of renal function. Reflux nephropathy is a cause of chronic kidney disease, and VUR has also been observed in dialysis patients. VUR is a major underlying precursor condition of urinary tract infection (UTI) and is sometimes accompanied by hydronephrosis. However, there are no guidelines for the management of UTI due to VUR-associated hydronephrosis in patients with end-stage kidney disease. Herein, we report a case of UTI caused by VUR-associated hydronephrosis in a dialysis patient treated with percutaneous nephrostomy.

Influence of sputtering parameter on the properties of silver-doped zinc oxide sputtered films

  • Silver doped ZnO (SZO) films were prepared by rf magnetron sputtering on glass substrates with extraordinary designed ZnO target. With the doping source for target, use AgNO$_3$ powder on a various rate (0, 2, and 4 wt.%). We investigated dependence of coating parameter such as dopant content in target and substrate temperature in the SZO films. The SZO films have a preferred orientation in the (002) direction. As amounts of the Ag dopant in the target were increased, the crystallinity and the transmittance and optical band gap were decreased. And the substrate temperature were increased, the crystallinity and the transmittance were increased. But the crystallinity and the transmittance of SZO films were retrograde at 200$^{\circ}C$. Upside facts were related with composition. In addition, the Oxygen K-edge features of the SZO films were investigated by using near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Changes of optical band gap of the SZO films were explained compared with XRD, XPS and NEXAFS spectra.

Numerical study on the evolution of the spin of spiral galaxies

  • We investigate the evolution of the galactic spin of spiral galaxies in various dynamical situations using the N-body/SPH simulations. To do this we first construct a Milky Way-like galaxy model. Then we perform both prograde and retrograde encounters between the spiral galaxy pair. We also conduct a simulation with our galaxy model in isolation for comparison. We find that the circular motion of the disk stars in the inner region of the galaxy decrease clearly when the galaxy experiences strong prograde interactions. Such decrease has not found when the galaxy experiences weak or no interactions. We compare our simulation results with recent observational studies on the galactic spins.

A case of cystinuria with a heterozygous SLC3A1 mutation presenting with recurrent multiple renal stones in a 14-year-old boy

  • Cystinuria, a genetically inherited disorder, is a rare cause of kidney stones. It is characterized by impaired transport of cystine and amino acids in the proximal renal tubule and the small intestine. Most patients develop cystine stones throughout their lifetime. Recurrent renal stones need to be extracted by repeated urologic interventions. Treatment options of cystinuria for preventing stone recurrence are limited and poorly tolerated. In this study, we report a pediatric case of cystinuria with a heterozygous SLC3A1 mutation diagnosed by stone analysis, measurement of urine cystine excretion, and genetic analysis. There were recurrent renal stones despite repetitive shock wave lithotripsy and retrograde intrarenal surgery. However, the rate of stone formation seemed to be slower after D-penicillamine was added into adequate hydration and urinary alkalinization.

  • Lymphatic disorders encompass a broad spectrum of diseases involving the lymphatic system, ranging from traumatic lymphatic leaks to lymphatic malformations. Lymphatic disorders can be categorized into traumatic and non-traumatic disorders according to their etiology. These two categories may be further divided into subgroups depending on the anatomical location of the lymphatic pathology and their association with clinical syndromes. Thoracic duct embolization was a milestone in the field of lymphatic intervention that encouraged the application of percutaneous embolization techniques to treat leaks and reflux disorders in the lymphatic system. Additional access routes for embolization, including retrograde thoracic duct and transhepatic lymphatic access, have also been developed. This article comprehensively reviews a variety of options for the treatment of lymphatic disorders, from conservative management to the most recent embolization techniques.
