An ocular Toxocara canis infection is reported for the first time in Vietnam. A 34-year-old man residing in a village of Son La Province, North Vietnam, visited the National Eye Hospital (NEH) in August 2011. He felt a bulge-sticking pain in his left eye and loss of vision occurred over 3 months before visiting the hospital. The eye examination in the hospital showed damage of the left eye, red eye, retinal fibrosis, retinal detachment, inflammation of the eye tissues, retinal granulomas, and a parasitic cyst inside. A larva of Toxocara was collected with the cyst by a medical doctor by surgery. Comparison of 264 nucleotides of internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) of ribosomal DNA was done between our Vietnamese Toxocara canis and other Toxocara geographical isolates, including Chinese T. canis, Japanese T. canis, Sri Lankan T. canis, and Iranian T. canis. The nucleotide homology was 97-99%, when our T. canis was compared with geographical isolates. Identification of a T. canis infection in the eye by a molecular method was performed for the first time in Vietnam.
Photobiomodulation therapy has been proposed as a promising therapeutic approach for retinal degenerative diseases. However, its effect on the regenerative capacity in mammalian retina and its intracellular signalling mechanisms remain unknown. Here, we show that photobiomodulation with 670 nm light stimulates Müller glia cell cycle re-entry and dedifferentiation into a progenitor-like state in both the uninjured and injured retina. We also find that 670 nm light treatment inhibits the Hippo pathway, which is activated in Müller glia following NaIO3-induced retinal injury. YAP, a major downstream effector of the Hippo signalling pathway was translocated into the nucleus of Müller glia along with YAP dephosphorylation in retina treated with 670 nm light. Deficiency of YAP attenuated Müller glia cell cycle re-entry and dedifferentiation. Our data reveal that the Hippo-YAP signalling pathway is associated with the photostimulatory effect on regenerative response in mammalian retina, and suggest a potential therapeutic strategy for retinal degenerative diseases.
Pregnancy-related ocular diseases develop mostly in the third trimester of pregnancy. Here, we describe a case of a pregnant woman with a choroidal mass that caused a serous retinal detachment during the first trimester of pregnancy. The patient's condition resolved spontaneously after an abortion.

Objectives: Lifting heavy weights involves the Valsalva manoeuvre, which leads to intraocular pressure spikes. We used data from a case-control study to further investigate the hypothesis that occupational lifting is a risk factor for retinal detachment. Methods: The study population included 48 cases (patients operated for retinal detachment) and 84 controls (outpatients attending an eye clinic). The odds ratios (OR) of idiopathic retinal detachment were estimated with a logistic regression model (adjusted for age, sex and body mass index). Three indexes were used to examine exposure to lifting; 1) maximum load lifted, 2) average weekly lifting, 3) lifelong cumulative lifting. Results: For all indexes, the most exposed subjects showed an increased risk of retinal detachment compared with the unexposed (index 1: OR 3.57, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.21-10.48; index 2: OR 3.24, 95% CI 1.32-7.97; index 3: OR 2.23, 95% CI 1.27-8.74) and dose-response relationships were apparent. Conclusion: These results reinforce the hypothesis that heavy occupational lifting may be a relevant risk factor for retinal detachment.

This paper proposes a decision support system to recognizing retinal diseases. This paper uses a smartphone platform and cloud computing as the base of the system. A microscopic lens is attached int' the smartphone camera to capture the user retinal image for recognizing the user's retinal condition. An application is assembled in computer and then installed in to the smartphone. The application role is to connect between the system in smartphone and system in cloud, the application will send the retinal image to the cloud system to be classified. The paper uses OCFE (optimized classifier based on feature elimination) algorithm as the classifier. The retinal image is trained using combination of two ophthalmology databases DIARETDB1 v2.1 and STARE. Therefore, this system average accuracy is 88%, while the average error rate is 12%.

Stem-cell therapy has the potential to improve vision in patients with untreatable retinal disease. Various types of cell source including fetal, embryonic and adult stem cells, intrinsic and extrinsic factors for differentiation into retinal progenitors and transplantation mode were discussed in this review. Experimental approaches have successfully induced photoreceptor precursor cells and retinal pigment epithelium. Stem-cell-based therapy is a promising treatment to restore vision in patients with retinal disease, in spite of the challenges.

Caesalpinia sappan is a well-distributed plant that is cultivated in Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Americas. C. sappan has been used in Asian folk medicine and its extract has been shown to have pharmacological effects. Two homoisoflavonoids, sappanol and brazilin, were isolated from C. sappan by using centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC), and tested for protective effects against retinal cell death. The isolated homoisoflavonoids produced approximately 20-fold inhibition of N-retinylidene-N-retinyl-ethanolamine (A2E) photooxidation in a dose-dependent manner. Of the 2 compounds, brazilin showed better inhibition (197.93 ± 1.59 μM of IC50). Cell viability tests and PI/Hoechst 33342 double staining method indicated that compared to the negative control, sappanol significantly attenuated H2O2-induced retinal death. The compounds significantly blunted the up-regulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and sappanol inhibited lipid peroxidation in a concentration-dependent manner. Thus, both compounds represent potential antioxidant treatments for retinal diseases. [BMB Reports 2015; 48(5): 289-294]

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is an established model organism for several pathophysiological conditions which are related to human diseases. In this study, we tested the preventive effect of eight herbal extracts, which show the inhibitory effect of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) or aldose reductase (AR) in our previous study, on high glucose (HG)-induced retinal vessel dilation in larval zebrafish and analyzed the change of hyaloid vasculature. HG-induced zebrafish hyaloid vasculatures were significantly increased in the thickness compared to untreated zebrafish (P<0.001, n=6~10). Eight herbal extracts were found to have significant retinal vessel dilation on the inhibitory activity. Particularly, Brandisia hancei (twigs and fruits), Castanopsis orthacantha (leaves and twigs), Litsea japonica (leaves and twigs), Spenceria ramalana (whole plant), and Synedrella nodiflora (leaves and stems) showed potent inhibitory activity against retinal vessel dilation in HG-induced larval zebrafish.
For the reliable transmission of meaningful visual information using prosthetic electrical stimulation, it is required to develop an effective stimulation strategy for the generation of electrical pulse trains based on input visual information. The characteristics of neuronal activities of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) evoked by electrical stimulation should be understood for this purpose. In this study, for the development of an optimal stimulation strategy for visual prosthesis, we analyzed the neuronal responses of RGCs in rd1 mouse, photoreceptor-degenerated retina of animal model of retinal diseases (retinitis pigmentosa). Based on the in-vitro model of epiretinal prosthesis which consists of planar multielectrode array (MEA) and retinal patch, we recorded and analyzed multiunit RGC activities evoked by amplitude-modulated electrical pulse trains. Two modes of responses were observed. Short-latency responses occurring at 3 ms after the stimulation were estimated to be from direct stimulation of RGCs. Long-latency responses were also observed mainly at 2 - 100 ms after stimulation and showed rhythmic firing with same frequency as the oscillatory background field potential. The long-latency responses could be modulated by pulse amplitude and duration. From the results, we expect that optimal stimulation conditions such as pulse amplitude and pulse duration can be determined for the successful transmission of visual information by electrical stimulation.
Angiogenesis is an important event involved in cell growth and wound healing process. However, the imbalance of growth factors causes diseases, such as ocular, inflammatory diseases. One of treatment of these diseases is to suppress the formation of blood vessels. Function and mechanism of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in the formation of blood vessels is not yet proved. Pigment epithelium derived factor (PEDF) is currently being offered anti-angiogenic materials. In this study, we postulated that AuNPs might have the ability to inhibit angiogenesis, the pivotal step in tumor growth, invasion and metastasis. We have demonstrated that AuNPs could inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) induced cell proliferation, angiogenesis in bovine retinal endothelial cells.
