  • the phytotoxic effects of volatile substances emitted from the tomato plant (Lycopersicon esculentum) on receptor plants such as Bidens bipinnata, Plantago asiatica, Lactuca sativa, Eragrositis ferruginea and Achyranthes japonica were investigated. Bolatile substances from the leaves inhibited seedling growth of receptor plants in the laboratory tests. The inhibition response varied with the concentration of compounds. To identify the phytotoxic compounds from tomato plant a GC/MS method was employed. Forth compounds, such as trans-2-hexeal, linalool, phenylacetaldehyde, methlsalicylic acid and tetradecanaic acid were identified from the essential oil of tomato plants. The findings suggest that the tomato plant may have allelopathic potential.

  • The effect of patulin, a mycotoxin, on the growth of Escherichia coli cell was investigated. E. coli cell elongation usually shown in SOS-response for DNA repair was induced by 20 mg of patulin per ml. After staining the E. coli chromosome with fluorescence dye(DAPI, 4', 6-diamino-2-phenyl-indole), chromosomal DNA partitioning was not affected by patulin. The observation indicateds that patulin acts as a DNA damaging agent which is effective for E. coli cell elongation introduced by the inhibition of septum formation.

  • Synthesis and distribution of extracellular matrix (ECM) components are dynamically altered in response to the pathophysiological processes including infection, inflammation and apoptosis. In particular, the levels of hyaluronan (HA) change with concomitant increases in the levels of collagen (e.g. type I collagen) and fibronectin in chronic liver diseases.(omitted)

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of inhibition of proliferation and antioxidant effect on B16F10 murine melanoma cell. Also, we examined by MTT(3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay and intracellular reactive oxygen intermediate levels and the levels of catalase(CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase(GPX) an adaptive response of oxidative stress on B16F10 murine melanoma cell of pretreated with hydrogen peroxide. • The present study was designed to compare the effects of conotoxin GVIA, a selective blocker of N-type voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCC) and cilnidipine, a blocker of both L- and N-type VDCC, on the secretion of catecholamines (CA) evoked by cholinergic stimulation and membrane-depolarization in the isolated perfused rat adrenal gland, and also to establish the mechanism of action. 1. The inhibition of the CA secretory response evoked by acetylcholine (5.32 x 10$\^$-3/ ${\mu}$M) was stronger in cilnidipine-treated glands than in conotoxin GVIA-treated glands. (omitted)

  • Quorum sensing, a gene expression in response to population density, is regulated by chemical signals, most of which are acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs). The AHL derivatives have been reported to regulate bioluminescence, virulence factors and / or swarming motility in bacteria. It is hypothesized that higher organisms may have evolved specific means to interfere with bacterial communication as exemplified in the AHL-antagonistic activity of halogenated furanones isolated from the Australian macroalga Delisea pulchra. • When plants are infected by plant pathogens, rapid cell responses are initiated for further inhibition from fast invasion of pathogens. Hypersensitive response (HR) of plant is well known defense response stopping pathogenesis process through rapid cell death. However, informations on the signaling pathway from reception of pathogen by host plants to appropriate resistant responses are very limited to date. Efficient perception of infection by pathogens and well-programmed signalling mechanism for appropriate responses are important for survival of plants. Plant have developed a sophisticated network(s) of defense/stress responses, among which one of the earliest signalling pathways after perception (of stimuli) is the evolutionary conserved Rop GTPase and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade.(중략)

  • Aquatic ecotoxicity of bisphenol A, a well known endocrine disrupter in mammals, was studied using lab. reared Daphnia magna as a test organism. The static acute 48h $LC_{50}$ of bisphenol A was 12.9mg/L and 110-hr $LC_{50}$ values of bisphenol A for daphnid embryos of different ages after deposition into the brood chamber increase with ages in the range of 1.55mg/L-8.91mg/L. Bisphenol A showed the ability to inhibit embryonic development. The lethal response and developmental inhibition all showed good concentration-response relationship.

  • Wogonin(5,7-dihydroxy-8-methoxyflavone), an anti-inflammatory plant flavonoid, was previously demonstrated to modulate the several parameters of animal skin inflammation. This compound inhibited edematic response as well as proinflammatory gene expression. In this investigation, the histopathological changes of the lesions from different types of experimental skin inflammation were compared and the potential therapeutic effect of topically applied wogonin was evaluated. From the results, it was found that multiple TPA treatment drastically increased ear edema accompanied with epidermal hyperplasia and inflammatory cell infiltration, while phenol treatment provoked only edematic response in the dermal area. Wogonin somewhat differently inhibited these animal models of skin inflammation.
