  • Good appearance of insulation coating is required for non-oriented silicon steel sheets, The property is influenced by both the chemical composition of coating solution and the species of resin. The composition of inorganic-organic coating was studied to obtain good surface quality for non-oriented silicon steel. The greenish degree of coating surface depended on $Cr^{3+}$ content in the coating layer, which was satisfied when chromate content was more than 54.60 wt. %, in the coating solution. The homogeneous pattern and roughness of the coating surface depended on spreading property of the resin. Surface appearance of the coating could be improved by using resin with good spreading property at the chemical composition of chromate 59.00 wt.%.. resin 34.23wt.%, and etyhylene glycol 6.67 wt.% without colloidal sillica.

  • This study examined the effects of carbon surface modification by the epoxy resin coating on the electrochemical performance. The mesocarbon microbeads(MCMB) carbon was surface-modified by coating the epoxy resin and its electrochemical properties as an anode was examined. The surface coating of MCMB was carried out by refluxing the MCMB powders in a dilute H2SO4 solution, and mixing them with the epoxy resin-dissolved tetrahydrofuran(THF) solution. Under heat-treatment of the coated MCMB at the temperature over $1000^{\circ}C$, the epoxy-resin coating layer was converted into amorphous phase which was identified by a high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). The epoxy resin coated MCMB has higher Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, higher charge/ discharge capacity and better cycleability than a raw MCMB without coating. The reason for the enhancement of cell performance by the epoxy resin coating were considered as the epoxy resin coating layer plays an important role to be a barrier for carbon reacting with electrolyte and to retard the formation of passivation layer.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of nano-structured alumina surface coating on shear bond strength between Y-TZP ceramic and various dual-cured resin cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 90 disk-shaped zirconia specimens (HASS CO., Gangneung, Korea) were divided into three groups by surface treatment method: (1) airborne particle abrasion, (2) tribochemicalsilica coating, and (3) nano-structured alumina coating. Each group was categorized into three subgroups of ten specimens and bonded with three different types of dual-cured resin cements. After thermocycling, shear bond strength was measured and failure modes were observed through FE-SEM. Two-way ANOVA and the Tukey's HSD test were performed to determine the effects of surface treatment method and type of cement on bond strength (P<.05). To confirm the correlation of surface treatment and failure mode, the Chi-square test was used. RESULTS. Groups treated with the nano-structured alumina coating showed significantly higher shear bond strength compared to other groups treated with airborne particle abrasion or tribochemical silica coating. Clearfil SA Luting showed a significantly higher shear bond strength compared to RelyX ARC and RelyX Unicem. The cohesive failure mode was observed to be dominant in the groups treated with nano-structured alumina coating, while the adhesive failure mode was prevalent in the groups treated with either airborne particle abrasion or tribochemical silica coating. CONCLUSION. Nano-structured alumina coating is an effective zirconia surface treatment method for enhancing the bond strength between Y-TZP ceramic and various dual-cured resin cements.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of three different surface conditioning methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal brackets bonded directly to gold alloy with chemically cured resin. Methods: Two hundred ten type III gold alloy specimens were randomly divided into six groups according to the combination of three different surface conditioning methods (aluminum oxide sandblasting only, application of a metal primer after aluminum oxide sandblasting, silica coating and silanation) and thermocycling (with thermocycling, without thermocycling). After performing surface conditioning of specimens in accordance with each experimental condition, metal brackets were bonded to all specimens using a chemically cured resin. The SBS was measured at the moment of bracket debonding, and the resin remnants on the specimen surface were evaluated using the adhesive remnant index. Results: Application of metal primer after aluminum oxide sandblasting yielded a higher bond strength than that with aluminum oxide sandblasting alone (p < 0.001), and silica coating and silanation yielded a higher bond strength than that with metal primer after aluminum oxide sandblasting (p < 0.001). There was no significant change in SBS after thermocycling in all groups. Conclusions: With silica coating and silanation, clinically satisfactory bond strength can be attained when metal brackets are directly bonded to gold alloys using a chemically cured resin.

  • Commonly used oil-based polymer resin has environmental and safety issues. Many researches for replacing the harmful solvent-borne resins to water-borne resins have been investigated to purify harmful environmental resources and follow the export and import of hazardous materials regulations. In this research, ultrasonic spray coatings of aqueous polymer resin were studied to fabricate thin insulating layer (${\sim}{\mu}m$) on the rectangular copper wire. It needs to have appropriate wettability between resin and substrate during the ultrasonic spray coating process to coat aqueous polymer uniformly. Furthermore, stabilities of coating solution and fabricating process are required to form thin insulating layer on the substrate. In here, physical characteristics such as viscosity of 6 types of commercial polymer dispersions and emersions were analyzed to confirm compatibility for ultrasonic spray coating process. These resins were dissolved in isopropyl alcohol, used for true solvent, and were diluted with ethanol, utilized for diluent. Also, solubilities, dispersion characteristics, and viscosities of these diluted polymer resin solutions were confirmed. Dispersion characteristic and viscosity of coating solution affects jetting of ultrasonic spray coating and these jetting characteristics influence morphologies of insulating layer. In conclusion, we have known that aqueous polymer solution should have outstanding dispersion characteristic and certain range of viscosity to fabricate thin polymer insulating layer uniformly with ultrasonic spray coating.

  • In case of esthetic restorative procedure with zirconia restoration, we have to use resin cement because of not only just for retention but also esthetic reason. In such a clinical situation, we have to consider two bonding interfaces, one is tooth surface to resin cement and the other is zirconia surface to resin cement. There is well established bonding protocol between tooth surface to resin cement, but bonding protocol of zirconia surface to resin cement is still controversial. In scientific point of view, there are two mechanism for bonding of zirconia restoration.. One is mechanical retention and the other is chemical adhesion. However, we have three different options for bonding of zirconia restoration in clinical situation; 1) Tribo-chemical coating with silica and silane coupling agent 2) Zirconia primer with phosphate chemistry 3) Self-adhesive resin cement with phosphate chemistry.

  • The purpose of this experiment was to determind whether the gold electrodeposit on Pd-Ag and Ni-Cr alloys influences on the shear bond strength between veneering resin and silicoated metal surface. All the metal specimens were sandblasted with $250{\mu}m$ aluminum oxide and followed by silicoating and resin veneering. According to the metal surfaces to be veneered, experimental groups were divided into five. Group Prec : Gold alloy without gold coating Group Semi : Pd-Ag alloy without gold coating Group Base : Ni-Cr alloy without gold coating Group Semi-G : Pd-Ag alloy with gold coating Group Base-G : Ni-Cr alloy with gold coating All specimens were thermocycled 1,000 times at temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$. The effects of gold electrodeposit on the shear bond strength between resin and metal interface were measured and fractured surface of the resin veneered metal was examined under the scaning electron microscope. The following results were obtained 1. The shear bond strength between resin and metal was $64.51{\pm}11.11Kg/cm^2$ in Prec group, $62.77{\pm}11.23Kg/cm^2$ in Base group and $58.97{\pm}9.20Kg/cm^2$ in Semi Group. There was no significant difference among the groups. 2. The bond strength in groups Semi-G and Base-G decreased about 17%, compared to the nongold-electrodeposit groups(Semi, Base). 3. In groups of non electrodeposit(Prec, Semi, Base), fracture occurred at the interface between alloy and resin, while fracture interface was observed between gold coating and resin in group Semi-G, and between metal substrate and gold coating in group Base-G respectively.

  • The novel carbon coating process for interlayer of fiber reinforced ceramic composites between fiber and matrix was performed by carbonizing phenolic resin solution that coated on fiber surface in $N_2$ atmosphere at $600^{\circ}C$ to improve the strength and fracture toughness of CMC(ceramic matrix composite). 160 nm carbon layer was coated on fiber surface with 5 vol% of phenolic resin solution. Since the process temperature ($600^{\circ}C$) is lower than chemical vapor deposition($900{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$), the strength and toughness could be preserved. Furthermore the coating thickness uniformity was improved to 8% of deviation along the stacking sequence. Therefore, prevention from fiber degradation during coating process and controlling coating thickness uniformity along the preform depth were achieved by coating with phenolic resin carbonizing method.

  • A study on a new anti-finger printed EGI steel sheet with high corrosion resistance has been carried out to meet the recent requirement of high quality and performance of the pure zinc electrogalvanized steel sheet. The substrate was the pure zinc electrogalvanized sheet with the metallic coating of 20g/$\m^2$. The two differ-ent processes for inorganic(chromating) and organic(resin) coating were applied. One was a two coat/two bake type to separately treat chromating and resin coating which is now widely used. The other was a one coat/one bake type to simultaneously treat them which is newly developed in this study. The solution for the one coat/one bake type was an aqua-base coating agents which was composed of inorganic and organic components. The new anti-finger printed EGI steel sheet with the Cr and resin coating weight of 13mg/$\m^2$ and 800mg/$\m^2$, respectively shows the superior corrosion resistance besides the good paintability, formability fingerprint resistance and earth characteristics properties.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dentin bonding agents on the bond strength of composite resin restorations in case of applying the dentin bonding agents to acid etched enamel surfaces. Freshly extracted 364 bovine anterior teeth were selected as a adherents. 320 enamel specimens were divided into two groups(unetched group (1) and etched group (2) for testing the shear bond strength, 40 specimens were used for the hardness testing, and 4 specimens of rest were to observe the resin-tag formation into etched enamel surfaces. All surfaces of enamel specimens were polished with 320~1500 SiC paper under continuous running water. In Group (1), 100 enamel specimens were polished and unetched. 220 polished enamel specimens in Group (2) were etched with 37 % phosphoric acid solution for 60 seconds, washed with water for 20 seconds, and dried with a light air pressure for 60 seconds. Three kinds of dentin bonding agents(Gluma, Prisma, Scotchbond 2) were evaluated the effect on the bond strength to conditioned enamel surfaces. Shear bond strengths were measured on the three cases such as a coating of primer only, a coating of sealer only, and a sequential coating of primer and sealer to acid etched enamel surfaces were compared with the bond strengths measured by the coating of enamel bonding agent followed by the bonding of composite resin (Photo clearfil bright, Kuraray, Japan) to unetched and acid etched enamel surfaces. In addition, the hardness tested on the adhesive fractured surface between composite resin enamel as a mean of evaluation of a factor whether the mechanical bond strengths were affected and the penetration of dentin bonding agents into etched enamel surfaces was also observed. Bond strengths were measured using the method of shear bond strength by a universal testing machine (Instron-4467, USA), statistical test were applied to the results using a one way analysis variance(ANOVA), and hardness was measured by the Vicker's Hardness Tester(MHT-i, Matsuzawa, Japan) and the penetration of the resins were observed by the SEM (Hitachi, S-2300, Japan). The following conclusions were drawn; 1. Enamel bonding agent showed to affect the improvement of bond strength of composite resin to enamel surface both unetched and etched. 2. Dentin bonding agents could be resulted in increase of bond strength to unetched enamel surface, but there were no statistical significances. 3. Bond strengths to etched enamel surface were significantly decreased with a coating of dentin primer only. 4. Coating of sealer only and coating of primer and sealer noticed the similar bond strengths of composite resin to etched enamel using the enamel bonding agents. 5. The applying method proved to be more effective than the kinds of dentin bonding agents on the bond strength of composite resin to etched enamel than the kind of dentin. 6. Vicker's hardness numbers of dentin bonding agents were lower than that of composite resin, but the degree of penetration of dentin bonding agents into etched enamel surfaces was excellent.
