This paper discusses the merits of the community capacity and capacity building concepts, the strategies used for building community capacity and their implications for community health nursing. Community capacity is defined as the interaction of the human capital, organizational resources, and social capital existing within a given community that can be used to improve or maintain the health of the community. Community capacity building is one approach to promoting community health. This approach takes a comprehensive, dynamic, and multidimensional view of community needs and circumstances and places an emphasis on asset development, collaboration among community organizations, and community participation. The major strategies for community capacity building involve activities such as facilitating the development of an asset-based approach to community, developing leadership, establishing partnership, organization development, utilizing community resources, and developing public relations. The implications of community capacity for community health nursing are addressed in terms of the need for community health education and practicum, long-term commitment, partnerships, and a paradigm shift. The author suggests that the concept of community capacity building may be useful for improving the health of both the entire community and its individual residents.
Currently, the environmental improvement project in residential building in Korea is focused on financing. To solve the variety of problems in urban residential areas, the plan need to apply more elements to improve sustainability. Thus, this study aims to find the main strategies to amend sustainability of the environmental improvement project in residential building. To do this, firstly I reviewed previous studies of sustainablity. Secondly I surveyed the planning elements of the three cases in Boksu-Dong District2, Daeseong-Dong District2, and Samsung-Dong District1 in Daejeon. Lastly I used the AHP analysis method and the 5-point Likert-type questionnaire of judged the importance among the plan elements with experts on urban regeneration of which is found through the previous literature review. In conclusion, this study shows the problems of the Residential Environment Improvement Project. Also, I found out the priority of the main planning elements to improve the problems. By contrasting the relative importance among the plan elements with the case study, the result of this study implies the directions of strategies which include the plan elements for responding climate change, residents' participation, and financial support program and system to improve the status of the environmental improvement project in residential building.
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between subjective happiness and social capital. The data for the analysis were collected via the questionnaire survey method, from October 29 to November 10, 2013. The sample consisted of 338 residents, living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-Do province. Social capital is composed of the social network, social trust and social norms. The social network is composed of the satisfaction of one's social relations, and the degree of social interaction. Social trust is composed of the trust in ones's neighbors and the local community. Social norms are composed of reciprocity, participation and a sense of belonging and solidarity. The findings of this study were as follows: 1) The average for subjective happiness was 3.82 points, over neutral. In particular, the subjective happiness of people over 50 years old was highest. 2) The social network, social trust, and social norms were related to the subjective happiness.
Since the late 1990s Korean housing authorities and private companies have been pursuing various initiatives towards sustainable neighbourhood design, however, there has been no attempt to examine their progress. This research aims to suggest a sustainability evaluation framework and analyse the progress of sustainability of a cutting edge project: Shinjung Environmentally Friendly Housing Estate Development, using that framework. The results of the analysis suggest that the project failed to make Significant progress in the sustainability evaluation criteria compared to normal projects in Korea and there exist significant barriers: economic/financial barriers; institutional/structural barriers; and implementation barriers within current planning and design practices. Most of the project's design strategies were simply adopted and used as a marketing tool without public participation, sustainability targets or benchmarking for sustainability. Furthermore, most of the responsibility for maintenance was left to residents who normally lack the knowledge, experience, interest and money to carry out such tasks. These problems cause significant concerns over the future success of the project toward sustainability. The experience of the Shinjung project also highlights the need for a more proactive central and local government stance towards sustainable neighborhood design.
Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effect of multidimensional program on cognition, physical function and depression among institutionalized elderly and the relationship between study variables and resident's characteristics and health related variables. Method: This study involved a one group pre and post test, comparison of variables over a 12 month period. To investigate this research question, data of 114 residents of a nursing home were analyzed. Results: There was statistically significant difference in MMSE-K (t=-2.63, p=.010), ADL (t=-2.85, p=.005), and depression (t=4.66, p=.000) before and after program participation. Conclusion: These results indicate that, for a year their regular involvement in a broad spectrum of multidimensional program activities can improve in cognitive, physical and emotional perspectives, but the level of IADL decreased significantly (t=-6.72, p=.000). Further testing is required with the control group, to compare with community resident elders in order to explore the effects on social skill of elderly.
In Korea, rural village improvement has mainly been led by goverment investment. This approach, however, has its own limit since there are so many village to be improved while the budgetary sources are restricted, As an alternative, inducement of private investments to these area is considered in order to promote rural village improvement. The possibility of inducing private investments to the rural village improvement depends on the location of the village. The possibility may be highest in the sub-urban area since expected benefits from land development is usually high. One desirable approach to induce private investment to these area is the cooperative development system. Residents, private investors and governments plays its own role, independently and cooperatively, But benifits from the investment to improve rural village in general plain area are so low that it is difficult to induce the private investments to these area. In that case, indirect development system will be a proper strategy which maintaining government-led development method as usual, expanding the participation of private developers such as the construction companies. In general, rate of returns from investment to the rural sectors is lower than that to the other sectors, therefore financial support such as the long- term, low loan rate and a partial value-added tax exemption should be given to the investors to the rural village improvement projects.
Now, the conservation policy of historic environments in Korea which started in early 1980's, is in a danger. In addition, because of economic crisis started last year, the concerns for historic environments are growing weaker. However, this situation can be a good opportunity to prepare for the coming conservation works, The purpose of this study is to find clues for conservation of historic environments by considering foreign precedents. For concrete results, this study selects historic rural settlements as a case and focuses on the relationship among related people in the light of the their rights. Based on the consideration of foreign precedents, three different characters in the conservation process could be identified compared with korean cases; 1) Except partial works of public sector, generally the conservation process is under the control of nonprofit groups and residents themselves, 2) Conservation methods include with the proper change process for the sustainable settlement, and avoid the unconditional past-oriented approach, 3) Conservation methods are composed of not only the preservation of external forms such as assets but also the continuous participation and management of the community. And the most important clue which has been extracted is that the diverse rights of related people in the historic rural settlements should be kept in balance thoroughly.

The purpose of this study is to propose a sustainable village-unit urban regeneration plan for the Ewha Mural Village, where mural artists recovered concrete fences to be followed by some residents damaging the mural paintings. Through a review of the existing literature and a preliminary survey, we derived the urban regeneration factors (environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, and social sustainability) applicable at the village level. After an empirical survey on the residents, we tried to identify various problems of the Ewha Mural Village. Residents selected the factors of accessibility, parking management, diversity of industries, creation of new jobs, community participation of residents for the mural village's activation, and stable living spaces. In the case of Ewha Mural Village, physical environment factors for the residents at the time of construction were not considered and the village was mainly planned using budget-based murals. Since then, the inequality of economic benefits intensified the conflicts among the residents. In addition, public benefits, such as establishing new industries and employing outsiders, were not provided, and these facts appear to have led to an unsustainable murals village, in which the murals that are the protagonists of the village revitalization are being destroyed. Therefore, the urban regeneration of Ewha Mural Village should be designed considering a region where some residential areas can be transformed into tourist areas. In addition, it is essential to employ a win-win method to improve the living environment, such as road maintenance, not only partial economic benefits, such as increased land-value, and to increase resident's value as a common asset within the village itself.
This paper studied the resolving the regional conflict method through the community capital formation. For this purpose, the theoretical background about the social capital, function of the social capital and component, and regional conflict factor were organized. In addition, it analyze empitically through the survey. First, in order to resolve the frequency analysis result regional conflict, the social capital formation was exposed to be important. Next, the regression analysis result, the factor of social capital and the local egoism, the local participation, and the problem of local areas, each, it was expressed as the coefficient of determination 5.1%, 5.5%, 1.6%, and F value showed up as 4.030, 4.3,51, 1.194. This demonstrates that it is decreased the regional conflict as the social capital formation is high. That is, the social capital formation was proved at the resolving the regional conflict that there was lots of the correlation. The purpose of this study was 1) to review communal housing in the UK, 2) to consider the policy implications for elderly communal housing in Korea. The research methods used were 1) literature review about communal housing and related policy in the UK 2) field survey in the UK 3) interpretative suggestion for the proper policy implication to develope communal housing for the elderly in Korea. Sheltered housing in the UK had been developed as communal housing for the elderly with special needs since the 1970s. The type of sheltered housing were category 1 and category 2. Very sheltered housing with more facilities and meal services was added in 1980s. Sheltered housing was evaluated as the most humanistic solution for older people in the UK in 1980s. Because of the policy of moving institutional care to community care, sheltered housing became less in demand because of more options for older people including being able to stay in their own home. So new completion of sheltered housing by registered social landlords reduced saliently. Sheltered housing already totalled over half million units in which 5% of all elderly over 65 still lived and a small quantity of private sector for sale schemes emerged in the 1990s. The reason why the residents moved to sheltered housing was for sociable, secure, and manageable living arrangements. In general the residents were satisfied with these characteristics but dissatisfied with the service charge and quality of meals, especially in category 2.5 schemes. The degree of utilisation of communal spaces and facilities depended on the wardens ability and enthusiasm. Evaluation of sheltered housing indicated several problems such as wardens duty as a \"good neighbour\" ; difficult-to-let problems with poor location or individual units of bedsittiing type with shared bathroom ; and the under use of communal spaces and facilities. Some ideas to solve these problems were suggested by researchers through expanding wardens duty as a professional, opening the scheme to the public, improving interior standards, and accepting non-elderly applicants who need support. Some researchers insisted continuing development of sheltered housing, but higher standards must be considered for the minority who want to live in communal living arrangement. Recently, enhanced sheltered housing with greater involvement of relatives and with tied up policy in registration and funding suggested as an alternative for residential care. In conclusion, the rights of choice for older people should be policy support for special needs housing. Elderly communal housing, especially a model similar to sheltered housing category 2 with at least 1 meal a day might be recommended for a Korean Model. For special needs housing development either for rent or for sale, participation of the public sector and long term and low interest financial support for the private sector must be developed in Korea. Providing a system for scheme managers to train and retrain must be encouraged. The professional ability of the scheme manager to plan and to deliver services might be the most important factor for the success of elderly communal housing projects in Korea. In addition the expansion of a public health care service, the development of leisure programs in Senior Citizens Centre, home helper both for the elderly in communal housing and the elderly in mainstream housing of the community as well. Providing of elderly communal housing through the modified general Construction Act rather than the present Elderly Welfare Act might be more helpful to encourage the access of general people in Korea. in Korea.
