  • Several optimization techniques have been proposed for volume ray casting, but these cannot achieve real-time frame rates. In addition, it is difficult to apply them to some applications that require perspective projection. Recently, hardware-based methods using 3D texture mapping are being used for real-time volume rendering. Although rendering speed approaches real time, the larger volumes require more swapping of volume bricks for the limited texture memory. Also, image quality deteriorates compared with that of conventional volume ray casting. In this paper, we propose a data structure for real-time volume ray casting named PERM (Precomputed dEnsity and gRadient Map). The PERM stores interpolated density and gradient vector for quantized cells. Since the information requiring time-consuming computations is stored in the PERM, our method can ensure interactive frame rates on a consumer PC platform. Our method normally produces high-quality images because it is based on conventional volume ray casting.

  • SPT-CL J2106-5844 is known to be one of the most massive galaxy clusters ($M_{200}{\sim}1.27{\times}10^{15}M_{sun}$) ever found at z > 1. Given its redshift (z ~ 1.132), the mass of this cluster estimated by Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect and X-ray observation is too large compared with the current ${\Lambda}CDM$ cosmology prediction. Mass estimation from these methods can be biased because they require assumptions on hydrostatic equilibrium, which are not guaranteed to hold at such high redshift (about 40% of the current age of the Universe). Thus, we need to verify the mass of this interesting cluster using gravitational lensing, which does not require such assumptions. In this work, we present our preliminary result of dark matter mass and its spatial mass distribution of SPT-CL J2106-5844 using weak-lensing analysis based on HST optical/NIR deep imaging data. We compare mass estimates from different sources and discuss cosmological implications.

  • This paper presents a power control method of high-speed single-phase BLDC motor. Most electric appliances require a power factor corrector (PFC) to mitigate grid current harmonics. However, the reactive components and power semiconductors in the PFC increase system cost and dimension. In this paper, a new motor drive system for a high-speed single-phase BLDC motor is proposed, which can decrease grid current harmonics without PFC by directly manipulating motor power and eliminating bulky electrolytic dc-link capacitor. Given that the proposed motor power control method does not require motor current controller, no current sensor is necessary. Moreover, the proposed algorithms can be easily implemented using a low-cost micro-controller. The effectiveness of the proposed power control method is verified by experiments.

  • There are many elastomeric joint sealant applications in construction such as structural glazing, weatherproofing and insulating glass fabrication etc. Each sealant joints require unique durability functions to perform well through building life cycle. Elastomeric joints in bathroom and kitchen is one of areas which require durable sealing. In this application, anti fungal durability is proprietary function of sealant during building life cycle. Premature failure of anti fungus resistance of sealant is putting big stresses to general contractor as well as the inhabitants due to costly rework and poor sanitation. Accordingly, when chemists design a product, they must take into account various parameters not only formulation components also test conditions in order to have long term fungal durability. This paper reviews several biocide options with various industry standards for fungus resistance performance to suggest making new test method for construction sealant industry.

  • Box-Jenkins models have some important limitations to the procedure : (a) They require a great deal of time, efforts and expertise for the model identification. (b) They require an extensive amount of past observations to identify an acceptable model. (c) The model selected is a constant model in time. Therefore, the Kalman Filter is recommended as a technique to overcome the three problems mentioned above. The research reported here uses the Kalman Filter algorithm to propose Kalman-AR(p) model. The data analysis shows that the Kalman-AR(p) model proposed can be used to resolve the problems of Box-Jenkins AR(p)model. It is seen that the Kalman Filter has great potentials for real-time industrial applications.

  • Railway sign(graphic sign, diagraphics) designs require good recognition with universality to transmit accurate and speedy information as they connect people around the station and other transport systems. An important point of signs is how to design and deliver the contents to the viewers as a communication service tools. It needs to establish design guidelines with standardization and unified system to show their contents and images clearly like common language with visuality, attractivity and generality. These requisites are important for both aesthetics legibility and unified standards to maximize the effectiveness of pictograms for the use of the general public, who require systematic suggestion and management.

  • In our modern society, such electric facilities as lighting, elevators, water supplies, drainages, waste water treatments and landscape lighting are being more enlarged, diversified and technology-intensive owing to outstanding technological development, while they require reliable and safe electricity. On the other hand, as more electric energy is consumed with more complicated systems operated, any accident from a personal electric system is likely to have wider spreading effects. In particular, the electric receivers and transformers installed for such public facilities as subway stations require highest safety, reliability and economy, but such requirements tend to be less considered than such financial requirements as budget conditions, much less their safety and reliability. In such a circumstance, this study was aimed at suggesting some standards for safe, reliable and economic subway electric systems in terms of their scale, location and uses. Specifically, this study put forwards the ways to optimize and standardize the electric systems including receivers and transformers for subway stations in order to make them safer, more reliable and economic.

  • To provide highly available services in the distributed object system, it is required to support the object group. The state machine approach and primary-backup approach are proposed as two representative approaches for support of object group. The primary-backup approach does not only give merits such as transparency of object group and non-deterministic execution but also require less resource than state machine approach. This paper describes an extension of CORBA that is required to support of the primary-backup object group. In this paper, the state of backup is synchronized with primary through the atomic multicast protocol whenever the request of client is executed at primary. As a result, it does not require message logging and check pointing. The object group of this paper also provides fast response time in case of failure of the primary since it makes primary election unnecessary. And through an extension of IDL, it makes possible to avoid consistency control depending on characteristic of application. A prototype has been implemented and the performance of object group has been compared with a single object invocation.

  • Local device-to-device (D2D) communication between two smart mobile devices is becoming increasingly popular. The first key step in starting a D2D communication is to discover and identify the remote target device to establish a link. However, existing device discovery mechanisms either require users to explicitly identify the ID of the target device or rely on inaccurate beamforming technology. This paper presents two novel device identification algorithms using a variety of embedded sensors. The algorithms only require that users to point two devices towards each other. This paper describes the algorithms, analyzes their accuracy using analytical models, and verifies the results using simulations.

  • This paper describes preliminary results we have obtained in developing a computer vision system based on active IR illumination for real time gaze tracking for interactive graphic display. Unlike most of the existing gaze tracking techniques, which often require assuming a static head to work well and require a cumbersome calibration process fur each person, our gaze tracker can perform robust and accurate gaze estimation without calibration and under rather significant head movement. This is made possible by a new gaze calibration procedure that identifies the mapping from pupil parameters to screen coordinates using the Generalized Regression Neural Networks (GRNN). With GRNN, the mapping does not have to be an analytical function and head movement is explicitly accounted for by the gaze mapping function. Furthermore, the mapping function can generalize to other individuals not used in the training. The effectiveness of our gaze tracker is demonstrated by preliminary experiments that involve gaze-contingent interactive graphic display.
