  • Recently, cosmetic shops play important roles in effectively delivering brand identity to customers. As a most effective mean to deliver brand identity to customers, a shop becomes the space to sell and buy brand image. This study divides brand identity into external identity as a space and internal identity as a brand philosophy with analysis of brand identity structure. To do this, the study proposition that brand awareness is high when there is high conformity between brand identities and survey to five Korean domestic cosmetic manufacturers that have a flagship store has been conducted to prove the proposition. With oneway Analysis of Variance on the survey, the result that the conformity between group's brand identities has significant relationship with brand awareness has been drawn. The findings are as followings; The spatial expression elements that have the strongest effects on the conformity between brand identities are facade, logo and sign, spatial image, fixtures image, symbolic sculpture and programs in order. For spatial elements, colors, shapes and materials have effects on conformity between brand identities in order. With analysis of spatial elements and their colors, shapes and materials, it is shown that all brand colors are used. In addition, brand conformity is emphasized with shapes and materials as well as colors. Futhermore, the brand awareness is improved when emphasis with such spatial elements is repeated in continuous manner. Also, the higher brand identity got, the higher brand awareness went up.

  • Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes (red kohlrabi) is a biennial herbaceous vegetable whose edible bulbotuber-like stem and leaves are consumed globally. Sliced red kohlrabi tubers were extracted using methanol and the concentrated extract was partitioned successively with dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), n-butanol (n-BuOH) and water (H2O). Repeated column chromatography of EtOAc fraction through silica, sephadex LH-20 and RP-18 gel led to isolation of eleven compounds of which compound 1 was a new glycosylated indole alkaloid derivative, 1-methoxyindole 3-carboxylic acid 6-O-β-D-glucopyranoside. Others were known compounds namely, β-sitosterol glucoside (4), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (5), methyl-1-thio-β-D-glucopyranosyl disulfide (6), 5-hydroxy-2-pyridinemethanol (7), (3S,4R)-2-deoxyribonolactone (8), n-butyl-β-D-fructopyranoside (9), uridine (10) and three fructose derivatives, D-tagatose (11), β-D-fructofuranose (12) and β-D-fructopyranose (13). Similarly, isolation from CH2Cl2 fraction gave two known indole alkaloids, indole 3-acetonitrile (2) and N-methoxyindole 3-acetonitrile (3). The structure elucidation and identification of these compounds were conducted with the help of 13C and 1H NMR, HMBC, HMQC, EIMS, HR-ESIMS and IR spectroscopic data, and TLC plate spots visualization. Compounds 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are noted to occur in kohlrabi for the first time. Different bioactivities of these isolated compounds have been reported in literature.

  • Environment-friendly shock-absorbing materials were made of wastepaper such as Korean old corrugated containers(KOCC) and Korean old newsprint (KONP) with a vacuum forming method. The plate-like cushioning materials made of KOCC and KONP respectively by vacuum forming showed superior shock-absorbing properties with lower elastic moduli compared to expanded polystyrene (EPS) and pulp mold. Even though the plate-like materials had many free voids in their fiber structure, their apparent densities (${\approx}0.1g/cm^3$) were a little higher than that of EPS (${\approx}0.03g/cm^3$) and much lower than that of pulp mold(${\approx}0.3g/cm^3$). However, the elastic moduli of the cushioning materials made of wastepaper were much lower than that of EPS or pulp mold. This finding implies that the cushioning materials made of KOCC fibers containing more lignin than KONP show better shock-absorbing properties than KONP. Moreover, the cushioning materials made of KOCC and KONP respectively showed greater porosity than pulp mold. The addition of cationic starch to the cushioning materials contributed to the increase in the elastic modulus to the same level as that of EPS. Furthermore, the deterioration in fiber quality by repeated use of wastepaper played a positive role in improving shock-absorbing ability.

  • Historical earthquakes have shown that successive seismic events may occur in regions of high seismicity. Such a sequence of earthquakes has the potential to increase the damage level of the structures, since any rehabilitation between the successive ground motions is practically impossible due to lack of time. Few studies about this issue can be found in literature, most of which focused their attention on the seismic response of SDOF systems or planar frame structures. The aim of the present study is to examine the impact of seismic sequences on the damage level of 3D multistorey R/C buildings with various structural systems. For the purposes of the above investigation a comprehensive assessment is conducted using three double-symmetric and three asymmetric in plan medium-rise R/C buildings, which are designed on the basis of the current seismic codes. The buildings are analyzed by nonlinear time response analysis using 80 bidirectional seismic sequences. In order to account for the variable orientation of the seismic motion, the two horizontal accelerograms of each earthquake record are applied along horizontal orthogonal axes forming 12 different angles with the structural axes. The assessment of the results revealed that successive ground motions can lead to significant increase of the structural damage compared to the damage caused by the corresponding single seismic events. Furthermore, the incident angle can radically alter the successive earthquake phenomenon depending on the special characteristics of the structure, the number of the sequential earthquakes, as well as the distance of the record from the fault.

  • Although vocabulary is one of the most important aspects in learning English, it is not dealt with as extensively as the grammar and reading comprehension in the classes due to time limitation. Furthermore, it is also dealt with in only a limited way at most of the English learning web sites compared to the other aspects such as grammar and reading comprehension. In this study. a web-based learning system for English vocabulary which allows a student to study the vocabulary before or after the classes by herself in order to supplement the English classes provided at school. Especially, it allows the students to learn the vocabulary within the context of sentences. It also provides an efficient structure for a repeated study of vocabulary that is new or difficult to the student.

  • The SSA technique in the digital circuit test is required to be repeated the input pattern stream to n bits output nodes n times in case of using a multiplexor. Because the method adopting a parallel/serial bit convertor to remove this inefficiency has disadvantage of requiring the test time n times for a pattern, the test strategy is required, which can enhance the test productivity by reducing the test time based on simplified fault detection mechanism. Accordingly, this paper proposes a test strategy which enhances the test productivity and efficiency by appling PAS (Parallel Signature Analysis) technique to those after analyzing the structure and characteristics of the digital devices including TTL and CMOS family ICs as well as ROM and RAM. The PSA technique identifies the faults by comparing the reminder from good device with reminder from the tested device. At this time, the reminder is obtained by enforcing the data stream obtained from output pins of the tested device on the LFSR(Linear Feedback Shift Resister) representing the characteristic equation. Also, the method to obtain the optimal signature analyzer is explained by furnishing the short bit input streams to the long bit input streams to the LFSR having 8, 12, 16, 20bit input/output pins and by analyzing the occurring probability of error which is impossible to detect. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed test strategy is verified by simulating the stuck at 1 errors or stuck at 0 errors for several devices on typical 8051 digital board.

  • Background: Ginseng is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine that has been widely used in a range of therapeutic and healthcare applications in East Asian countries. Microbial transformation is regarded as an effective and useful technology in modification of nature products for finding new chemical derivatives with potent bioactivities. In this study, three minor derivatives of ginsenoside compound K were isolated and the inducing effects in the Wingless-type MMTV integration site (Wnt) signaling pathway were also investigated. Methods: New compounds were purified from scale-up fermentation of ginsenoside Rb1 by Paecilomyces bainier sp. 229 through repeated silica gel column chromatography and high pressure liquid chromatography. Their structures were determined based on spectral data and X-ray diffraction. The inductive activities of these compounds on the Wnt signaling pathway were conducted on MC3T3-E1 cells by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. Results: The structures of a known 3-keto derivative and two new dehydrogenated metabolites were elucidated. The crystal structure of the 3-keto derivative was reported for the first time and its conformation was compared with that of ginsenoside compound K. The inductive effects of these compounds on osteogenic differentiation by activating the Wnt/b-catenin signaling pathway were explained for the first time. Conclusion: This study may provide a new insight into the metabolic pathway of ginsenoside by microbial transformation. In addition, the results might provide a reasonable explanation for the activity of ginseng in treating osteoporosis and supply good monomer ginsenoside resources for nutraceutical or pharmaceutical development.

  • Graphite and carbonaceous materials showed an excellent capability as a negative electrode in Li-ion batteries because Li-ion can be intercalated and de-intercalated reversibly within most carbonaceous materials of layered structure. Also, the electrochemical potential of Li-intercalated carbon anode is almost identical with that of Li metal. In the present study, mesocarbon microbeads(MCMB) were used as anode electrode and its properties of charge/discharge and interfacial reaction with electrolyte were studied by Potentiostat/Galvanostat test, FT-IR analysis, XRD and SEM. The passivation film of solid-state was formed as the interface between electrode and electrolyte as the cell reaction began and, once formed, became thicker with repeated charge/discharge process. Also, the relationship between the passivation film formed at the electrode interface and storage capacity was discussed.
