The effect of temperature, washing time, mechanical agitation and concentration on the removal from cotton fabrics of tripalmitin labelled with C\sup 14\ were studied. In order to correlate the detergency with the removal mechanism, solubilization and suspending power of surfactants were observed. RESULTS : 1. The detergency from cotton fabric was increased with elevating temperature and over the temperature of maximum detergency, the rate of soil removal was rather decreased. 2. The effects of washing time and mechanical agitation on the removal of triplamitin were obvious at lower temperature. 3. The removal of tripalmitin was remarkably increased at higher concentration over cmc for all surfactants. The detergency of nonionic surfactant -NPPG- was best, this was resulted from its large solubilization and suspending power.
In order to evaluate the exact effect of detergency it is necessary both to measure the actual soil content by chemical analysis and to determine the degree of soil removal visually. Since it takes considerable time and effort to use both methods, usually one of the two methods is used. Many studies have been carried out through increasing the visibility of oily soil to evaluate detergency by measuring reflectance of fabrics. In this study Sudan Black B, an oil soluble dye was used as an indicator to increase the visibility of oily soil on cotton and polyester fabrics. The condition of artificially soiled fabrics and the method of evaluating detergency were investigated which represent the actual detergency of oily soil by measuring the reflectance only. Also the detergency of Sudan Black B and that of oily soil were compared with each other under various washing conditions, As a result, the K/S values converted from the reflectances showed a good correlation with the actual soil content. Linear relationship between K/S value and the actual soil content was obtained. The K/S values of washed fabrics were higher than those of unwashed fabrics which included same content of soil since the soil visibility changed during washing. But the difference was small when Sudan Black B was used. With the increase of soil content, detergency of cotton fabric decreased, but detergency of polyester fabric increased gradually. With regards to soiled fabrics, detergency of cotton fabric measured by K/S value was close to that of actual oily soil when Sudan black B was used as an indicator.
The effect of free fatty acid in fatty soil on the detergency of particulate soil was investigated. Cotton lawn fabric was soiled with the mixture of polmitic acid, hydrogenated fat, paraffin oil and iron oxide black altering the contents of palmitic acid and was laundered with different sur-fastants under various temperature and alkalinity. The rate of soil removal was estimated by means of the spectoometic analysis of iron on the fabric before and after washing. The results of dergency were compared those obtained by reflactance and K/S value from Kubelka-Munk equation which were derived from reflactance measurements.
The effect of protease (subtilisin Carlsberg) on the removal of hemoglobin as protein soil was studied. The relation between the renloval and the hydrolysis of hemoglobin by subtilisin Carlsberg was discussed. The soiled babric was prepared by spotting of hemoglobin solution evenly on the cotton fabric and was denatured by steaming. The soiled fabric was washed by using Terg-0-Tometer at various conditions. The removal efficiency was evaluated by analysis of protein on the fabrics before and after washing by means of copper-Folin method. 1. The removal of hemoglobin was increased in proportion to increasing of the enzyme concentration up to a certain point, but it began to decrease above the point. 2. The hemoglobin was removed effectively by adding of subtilisin Carlsberg, and more effectively removed by adding of AOS in the enzyme solution. 3. The removal of hemoglobin deviated from the first order reaction in detergency. 4. The renloval of hemoglobin was highest at $50^{\circ}C$ in detergency, Even at low temperature the removal efficiency of enzyme was relatively higher compared with the hydrolysis of hemoglobin by the enzyme. However the removal of hemoglobin was apparently decreased with the increase of temperature over $60^{\circ}C$. 5. The removal of hemoglobin was relatively high at pH 7.0~8.0 and increased continuously with the increase of pH in detergency 6. In detergency, the removal mechanism of hemoglobin by subtilisin Carlsberg could be explained as follows: Fisrt of all, the enzyme hydrolyzed hemoglobin substrates partially by forming E-S complex at the surface of hemoglobin on the cotton fiber, and decomposed cooperative binding of hemoglobin. Subsequently, the fragments of hemoglobin were easily removed by washing. According as the enzyme penetrated to inner part of hemoglobin gradually, the hemoglobin on the cotton fiber was effectively removed by the repetition of these process. The removal of hemoglobin was more effectively increased by adding both the enzyme and AOS in the washing solution. Therefore, it was regarded that AOS molecules were adsorbed at the hydrophobic surface of denatured hemoglobin, subsequently, decomposed more effectively cooperative binding of hemoglobin, and the fragments of hemoglobin were removed more efficiently by means of the interfacial reaction of AOS.
The effects of surfactants and concentration of NaOH in surfactant solution on the removal of free fatty acid soil from cotton fabrics were investigated. Cotton fabrics were soiled with palm itic acid which is the most common fatty acid found in natural oily soil and washed in Lauder-ometer with various types of surfactant with or without NaOH. The rate of soil removal was estimated by analyzing palmitic acid contents in fabric before ar d after washing. Analysis of palmitic contents was made by extracting palmitic acid with azeotropic mixture of alcohol-benzene and the extracts were titrated with standard NaOH solution. It was shown that the types of surfactant are important factor in free fatty acid removal and the efficiency increases in the following order: SLS$90\%$ of initial sorption. In relation to the mechanism of detergency, the suspending and emulsifying power of surfactants were also examined. From the results of this experiments, it could be concluded that the soap formation with alkali and the suspending power of surfactant arc significant factors in free fatty acid soil removal, but the emulsifying power of it is neglizible.
Nylon fabric was grafted for the purpose of the development of detergency against the hemoglobin as a protein soil. By free-radical producing chemical initiator systems the graft using acrylic acid(AA) as a hydrophilic vinyl monomer was performed to change surface energies in the presence of ammonium persulfate(APS) as an initiator and then acrylic acid grafted Nylon was treated with NaOH solution. The surface morphology for Nylon-g-NaAA with changing graft rate were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) The properties of the Nylon such as diameter tenacity elongation contact angle and the hemoglobin removal were also investigated. The diameter of grafted Nylon fiber increased as the graft ratio increased. The tenacity of grafted Nylon also increased with increasing graft ratio up to 15% The elongation however decreased gradually according to graft, The contact angle decreased after graft and alkaline treatment. The amount of hemoglobin on the grafted Nylon increased in proportion to the graft ratio. Hemoglobin was easily removed from grafted Nylon while it was difficult to be removed from ungrafted Nylon. The detergency of hemoglobin for grafted Nylon decreased when the graft ratio exceeded 15% The removal of hemoglobin increased markedly with increasing hemoglobin content and revolution speed. Therefore the removal of hemoglobin was improved due to graft and alkaline treatment.
Experimental research is needed to provide information on the removal of bloodstains since washing clothes contaminated with blood is necessary for medical related fields (such as ambulance workers and doctors) as well as for women of childbearing age. This study investigated efficient washing conditions for the removal of bloodstains with a focus on washing temperature, fiber type and blood ageing time. Polyester/cotton fabric showed the highest detergency from among three fabrics that were influenced by the composition of the fiber and the structure of the yarn and fabric. When examining the effect of detergent, it was concluded that the alkalinity over pH 10 was essential to remove bloodstains and that auxiliary agents such as soil antiredeposition agents and bleach had a significant effect on the removal of bloodstains. Washing temperature showed the highest detergency at 20℃ due to the activity of the enzyme without the denaturalization of blood. Blood-ageing influenced detergency by inducing changes in the adsorption area and chemical bond. A combination of methods such as quick removal after contamination, use of alkaline detergents including soil antiredeposition agents and bleach, and low-temperature washing could help remove bloodstains.
To study the effects of surface structure of fiber on the decrement of fatty soil removal at high temperature, the following variables were selected: controled and alkali-treated P.E.T.(polyester) fabrics and chopped fibers as substrates to estimate the detergencies, different aging methods of soiled substrates, and different washing temperatures and surfactant solutions. Radiotagged tripalmitin was used as soil and the detergency was estimated by means of liquid scintillation counting method. The results were as following: The surface of the fiber became rough with many grooves and the hydrophilicity of the fiber was increased and the structure of the fabric became loose by alkali treatment. While the detergency of alkali-treated P.E.T. fabric was better than that of controled P. E. T. fabric, there was no significant differences between the detergencies of controled and alkali-treated chopped fibers. These results indicate that the increment of detergency of alkali-treated P.E.T. fabric is mainly resulted from the changes of fabric structure and the improved hydrophilicity of fiber by alkai treatment. The detergency of tripalmitin was increased with elevating temp. below the m.p. of tripalmitin, was decreased around the m.p., and again was increased above the m.p ..It is considered that the decrement of detergency around the m.p. is due to the diffusion of molten tripalmitin into the grooves on fiber surface, the inner part of fiber, and between fibers. When controled and alkali-treated soiled fabrics and soiled chopped fibers were washed in the distilled water and in the Na-DBS solution respectively, below $60^{\circ}C$ detergencies of alkali-treated fabrics and chopped fibers were improved. However above $60^{\circ}C$ this result was reversed. Therefore these results are regarded as the effects of grooves on fiber surface at high temp. and improved hydrophilicity at low temp. by alkali treatment. When controled and alkali-treated soiled fabrics and soiled chopped fibers were hot-aged before washing, the detergencies of both species were decreased generally. Because the soil was diffused into the grooves on fiber surface, the inner part of fiber, and between fibers during hot-aging. The detergencies of hot-aged species were also decreased above certain temp.. These results suggest that the decrement of detergency at high temp. be resulted not only from the diffusion of soil into the grooves on fiber surface, the inner part of fiber, and between fibers, but also from the characteristics of surfactant solutions.
The dry cleaning effect related to the type of soil and fiber was analyzed using silicone and alcohol-based solvents(ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone) that are relatively safe for the human body and environment to improve the detergency of hydrophilic soils in dry cleaning system. Based on this analysis, an effective dry cleaning method to be carried out for improving the detergency according to the type of hydrophilic soils. After dry cleaning was performed using 20 types of artificial soiled fabrics consisting of 7 types of fibers and 4 types of hydrophilic soils, the detergency was measured and the results were compared and analyzed by solvents and fiber types. The results are presented as follows; first, the detergency of hydrophilic soils using silicone solvents showed a low rate of detergency. In particular, the tannin soil showed a lower level of detergency compared to the protein soil. Second, the detergency of hydrophilic soils using silicon solvents with dry soap differed in some detergency according to the soil and fiber types. Especially, the detergency of curry soil on cotton fabric showed significant improvement. Third, the protein soil was not removed from dry cleaning using alcohol-based solvents, but the effect of dry cleaning of curry soil on both cotton and polyester fabric was substantially improved. As a result, the elimination of blood soil is more effective in silicon solvents than in alcohol-based solvents. The removal of tannin soils may improve detergency by adding dry soap to silicon solvents or by using alcohol-based solvents as alternative solvents. The use of alternative solvents such as silicon and alcohol solvents can contribute to the environmental improvement of the dry cleaning industry, which uses petroleum-based solvents. It is also expected to provide consumers with the opportunity to choose eco-friendly and efficient dry cleaning methods.
The removal and redeposition of particulate soil occur simultaneously during the washing process. In order to investigate variables which affect on the redeposition of particulate soil, cotton lawn was soiled in the ion oxide black suspension using Launder-O meter. The amount of deposited soil was estimated by means of the spectrometric analysis of iron on the fabric after soiled. The results are as follows: 1. The presence of surfactants b suspension decreased the deposition of particulate soil and the most effective surfactant was soap and the descending order was NaDBS>CTAB>PONPE. 2. The influnce of temperature on soil deposition was considerable, soil deposition was gradually increased with elevating temperature in ionic surfactants solution such as NaDBS and CTAB but that was decreased above $40^{\circ}C$ in nonionic surfactant solution. 3. The tendency of soil deposition was dwindled by adding electrolytes especially in case of polyvalent anions. 4. From the results of the experiments redeposition of particulate soil was related with suspending power of surfactants and was influenced by factors varing zeta potential.
