  • Recently, bridge deck overlay with latex modified concrete is widely applied in domestic. the capacity of bridge deck overlay depends on bond state on the surface. factors that have an effect on bond state are clean condition on the surface, absence of surface microcracking, absence of laitance, overlay curing. In this study, it is researched that characteristic of bond strength according to moisture condition on the surface and the removal method of concrete. As a result, it shows high bond strength in dry condition when w/c is $31\%$ and in moisture condition when w/c is $38\%$ respectively. characteristic of bond strength according to the removal method of concrete shows high bond strength when using water-jets rather than jackhammers.

  • In this study, the treatment ability of the wastewater containing perchlorate by non-salt tolerant perchlorate reducing bacterial consortium (N-PRBC) was evaluated in a continuous stirred tank bioreactor (CSTR). To obtain the optimal operating condition the bioreactor was operated with the different wastewater empty bed retention time (EBRT). The treatment performance in the bioreactor could be maintained at 100 $mg-ClO_4{^-}L^{-1}$ up to a EBRT of 3 h, and the removal capacity in the CSTR was about 3.3 times higher than that in a batch operation. With a decrease from 9 h to 2 h in a EBRT, the volumetric perchlorate reduction rate was increased from 11.1 $mg-ClO_4{^-}L^{-1}h^{-1}$ to 50.0 $mg-ClO_4{^-}L^{-1}h^{-1}$, and the specific perchlorate reduction rates were increased from 3.01 $mg-ClO_4{^-}g-DCW^{-1}h^{-1}$. In conclusion, the treatment capacities in a CSTR were much better than those obtained in a batch operation.

  • The facility of constructed wet land combined with filter media was examined in order to improve the water quality of a polluted stream, which has been performed as a part of national projects. Throughout 2 years of operation for a stream, it can provide the design and operating parameters for the purpose of future construction. The influent flow rate was about 50% against the design capacity. The removal efficiencies of BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, SS, T-N and T-P were 62.9%, 47.1%, 74.8%, 22.4% and 33.5%, respectively. In order to keep this facility stable, the removal of surface filter media and supplement should be periodically conducted. In addition, the proper selection of sites is recommended not to be flooded.

  • In this study, nitrate reduction of real groundwater sample by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite catalyst was evaluated at different nitrate concentrations, catalyst concentrations, and recycling. Results show that the nitrate reduction is improved by increasing the catalyst concentration. Specific nitrate removal by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite increased linearly with the increase of nitrate concentration showing that the catalyst possesses significantly higher reduction capacity. More than 95% nitrate reduction was observed over five recycles by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite with ~56% nitrogen selectivity in all recycling batches. The results from this study indicate that stable reduction of nitrate in groundwater can be achieved by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite over the wide range of initial nitrate inputs.

  • A novel activated carbon produced from cherry laurel (Laurocerasus officinalisRoem.) seeds (CLSAC) by chemical activation with ZnCl2 was used as an adsorbent to remove Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions. CLSAC was characterized by several techniques and the adsorption experiments were performed in a batch model adsorption technique. The effects of various experimental parameters were investigated as a function of solution pH, contact time, initial Cr(VI) concentration, CLSAC concentration, and temperature. The monolayer adsorption capacity of CLSAC was found to be 41.67 mg g-1 for 5.0 g L-1 of CLSAC concentration and, it was concluded that CLSAC can be used as an effective adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) from waters and wastewaters.

  • In this study, silver pre-treated activated carbons are transformed using sulfuric acid. From the results of adsorption, each isotherm shows a distinct knee band, which is characteristic of microporous adsorbents with capillary condensation in micropores. In order to reveal the causes of the differences in adsorption capacity and specific surface area after the samples were washed with various strengths of sulfuric acid, surface morphology and external pore structure were investigated by SEM. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that Ag-activated carbons show better performance for silver and silver compounds removal by post-treatment with acid. The FT-IR spectra of silver-activated carbon samples show that the acid post-treatment was consequently associated with the removal of silver with an increased surface functional group containing oxygen of the activated carbon. The type and quality of oxygen groups are determined on the method proposed by Boehm. For the chemical composition microanalysis of silver-activated carbons transformed by post-treatment with sulfuric acid, samples were analyzed by EDX.

  • To treat wastewater efficiently by a one-step process of nitrogen removal, a new bacterial strain producing $N_2$ gas from ${NH_4}^+$ under an aerobic condition was isolated and identified. The cell was motile and a Gram-negative rod, and usually occurred in pairs. By 16S-rDNA analysis, the isolated strain was identified as Enterobacter asburiae with 96% similarity. The isolate showed that the capacity of $N_2$ production under an oxic condition was approximately three times higher than that under an anoxic condition. Thus, the consumption of ${NH_4}^+$ by the isolate was significantly different in the metabolism of $N_2$ production under the two different environmental conditions. The optimal conditions of the immobilized isolate for $N_2$ production were found to be pH 7.0, $30^{\circ}C$ and C/N ratio 5, respectively. Under all the optimum reaction conditions, $N_2$ production by the immobilized isolate resulted in reduction of ORP with both the consumption of DO and the drop of pH. The removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$, and TN were 56.1 and 60.9%, respectively. The removal rates of $COD_{Cr}$, and TN were the highest for the first 2.5 hrs with the removal $COD_{Cr}/TN$ ratios of 32.1, and afterwards the rates decreased as reaction proceeded. For application of the immobilized isolate to a practical process of ammonium removal, a continuous operation was executed with a synthetic medium of a low C/N ratio. The continuous bioreactor system exhibited a satisfactory performance at 12.1 hrs of HRT, in which the effluent concentrations of ${NH_4}^+$-N was measured to be 15.4 mg/L with its removal efficiency of 56.0%. The maximum removal rate of ${NH_4}^+$-N reached 1.6 mg ${NH_4}^+$-N/L/hr at 12.1 hrs of HRT(with N loading rate of $0.08\;Kg-N/m^3$-carrier/d). As a result, the application of the immobilized isolate appears a viable alternative to the nitrification-denitrification processes.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the regeneration method of filter media using physical and chemical treatment for restoration of phosphorus adsorption ability. The filtration material used in this study is called Adphos. In an experiment of heating treatment, re-used filter media is heated to a high temperature before the adsorption test. The results show that the $PO{_4}^{3-}-P$ adsorption capacity is in the range of 0.0021 - 0.0030 mg/g and the removal efficiency is in the range of 26.1 - 39.4%. In the experiment of acid or basic treatment, re-used filter media is exposed to a different pH condition before the adsorption test. The results show that the $PO_4^{3-}-P$ adsorption capacity is in the range of 0.0010 - 0.0066 mg/g and the removal efficiency is in the range of 15.8 - 87.1% after the acid treatments which have pH values of 1 - 5. However, after the basic treatments which have pH values of 8 - 11, the results show that the $PO{_4}^{3-}-P$ adsorption capacity is in the range of 0.0018 - 0.0034 mg/g and the removal efficiency is in the range of 26.7 - 48.0%. In an experiment of chemical treatment using NaCl, re-used filter media was exposed to a different NaCl concentration before the adsorption test. The results show that the $PO{_4}^{3-}-P$ adsorption capacity is in the range of 0.0036 - 0.0050 mg/g and the removal efficiency is in the range of 50.5 - 71.1%. In conclusion, chemical treatment using NaCl shows a high recovery probability of phosphorus adsorption ability of filter media.

  • In this research the characteristics of ammonia removal from malodorous waste-air were investigated under various operating condition of biofiilter packed with equal volume of rubber media and compost for the efficient removal of ammonia, representative source of malodor frequently generated at compost manufacturing factory and publicly owned facilities. Then the optimum conditions were constructed to treat waste-air containing ammonia with biofilter. Biofilter was run for 30 days(experimental frequency of 2 times/day makes 60 experimental times.) with the ammonia loading from $2.18g-N/m^3/h$ to $70g-N/m^3/h$ at $30^{\circ}C$. The ammonia removal efficiency reached almost 100% for I through IV stage of run to degrade up to the ammonia loading of $17g-N/m^3/h$. However the removal efficiency dropped to 80% when ammonia loading increased to $35g-N/m^3/h$, which makes the elimination capacity of ammonia $28g-N/m^3/h$ for V stage of run. However, the removal efficiency remained 80% and the maximum elimination capacity reached $55g-N/m^3/h$ when ammonia loading was doubled $70g-N/m^3/h$ for VI stage of run. Thus the maximum elimination capacity exceeded $1,200g-N/m^3/day$(i.e., $50g-N/m^3/h$) of the experiment of biofilter packed with rock wool inoculated with night soil sludge by Kim et al.. However, the critical loading did not exceed $810g-N/m^3/day$ (i.e., $33.75g-N/m^3/h$) of the biofilter experiment by Kim et al.. The reason to exceed the maximum elimination capacity of Kim et al. may be attributed to that the rubber media used as biofilter packing material provide the better environment for the fixation of nitrifying and denitrification bacteria to its surface coated with coconut based-activated carbon powder and well-developed inner-pores, respectively.
