Since the modem reinforced soil wall technology was introduced in domestic civil engineering society in the year 1980, the reinforced soil walls have been extensively used because these technologies have advantages such as economical efficiency, graceful appearance, and easy construction. This paper describes the application of reinforced soil wall, design criteria, and construction problems. Many cases of troubles, which include a severe deformation of facing, cracks of facing block, overall sliding failure and so on, have been reported. Inappropriate design and construction management mainly induce these problems. The technological level of design and quantity control for reinforced soil wall is not sufficiently supported to cope with the growth quantity of reinforced soil wall construction market and the increasing number of construction companies. The unified standard design and construction criteria of reinforced soil wall should be established with the detail consideration of overall performance and stability. The quality control of design and construction, and cost of construction must be seriously executed to construct a high quality of reinforced soil wall.

Recently, the scale in the field of reinforced soil retaining wall has been grown up like tiered reinforced soil retaining wall. However, there have been increasing number of collapse accidents and large scale of collapse. The design manual adopted in the construction fields have been inconsistent in tiered reinforced soil retaining wall. Therefore, this study performed finite element analysis on 90 cases and analyzed characteristic behavior of lower wall which was one of the effect factors on the stability of tiered reinforced soil retaining wall. The facing displacement of each walls and the behavior of the whole ground were interpreted by the numerical analysis depending on the lower offset distance by the upper wall as well as the upper offset distance by the surcharge load. The results showed that the behavior of tiered reinforced soil retaining wall was differed by condition of surcharge load and each offset distance was found to be important factor.
The use of reinforced soil walls has grown significantly over the last few decades due to their ease construction and economical efficiency. Many damage cases of the reinforced soil walls have been reported as the use of reinforced soil walls increases. Inappropriate design and construction management mainly induce these problems. This paper describes case study on two damaged geogrid reinforced soil walls. The causes of the damage are investigated through the site investigations and proper countermeasures are proposed.
The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical characteristics of fiber-reinforced lightweight soil using waste fishing net or monofilament for recycling both dredged soils and bottom ash. Reinforced lightweight soil consists of dredged soil, cement, air foam, and bottom ash. Waste fishing net or monoiament was added the mixture in order to increase the shear strength of the lightweight soil. Test specimens were fabricated with various mixing conditions, including waste fishing net content and monofilament content. Several series of unconfined compression tests and direct shear tests were carried out. From the experimental results, it was found that the unconfined compressive strength, as well as the stress-strain behavior of reinforced lightweight soil was strongly influenced by mixing conditions. In this study, the maximum increase in shear strength was obtained with either a 0.5% content of monofilament or 0.25% waste fishing net. The unconfined compressive strength of reinforced lightweight soil with monofilament was greater than that of reinforced lightweight soil with waste fishing net.

This paper investigates strength characteristics and stress-strain behaviors of geogrid mixing reinforced lightweight soil. The lightweight soil was reinforced with geogrid in order to increase its compressive strength. Test specimens were fabricated by various mixing conditions including cement content, initial water content, air content and geogrid layer and then unconfined compression tests were carried out. From the experimental results, it was found that unconfined compressive strength as well as stress-strain behavior of lightweight soil were strongly influenced by mixing conditions. The more cement content that is added to the mixture, the greater its unconfined compressive strength. However, the more initial water content or the more air foam content, the less its unconfined compressive strength. It was observed that the strength of geogrid reinforced lightweight soil was increased due to reinforcing effect by the geogrid for most cases except cement content less than 20%. In reinforced lightweight soil, secant modulus $(E_{50})$ was increased as the strength increased due to the inclusion of geogrid.

The major factors that control the performance of reinforced soil structures is the interaction between the soil and the reinforcement. Thus it is necessary to obtain the accurate bond parameters to be used in the design of these structures. To evaluate the behavior of flyash + clay soil reinforced with a woven geotextile, 36 Unconsolidated-Undrained (UU) and 12 reinforced Consolidated-Undrainrained (CU) triaxial compression tests were conducted. The moisture content of soil during remolding, confining pressures and arrangement of geotextile layers were all varied so that the behavior of the sample could be examined. The stress strain patterns, drainage, modulus of deformation, effect of confinement pressures, effects of moisture content have been evaluated. The impact of moisture content in flyash + clay backfills on critical shear parameters was also studied to recommend placement moisture for compaction to MDD. The results indicate that geotextile reinforced flyash + clay backfill might be a viable alternative in reinforced soil structures if good-quality granular backfill material is not readily available.
This paper is concerned with the numerical evaluation of the failure behavior of reinforced soil walls based on the elasto-plastic theory. At first, the basic analysis on the failure behavior of reinforced soil walls are discussed. Parametric study of the major factors influencing the failure behavior is conducted by FEM. The objectives are to identify and evaluate the major facts influencing the failure mode of reinforced soil walls. The results of the parametric study on the failure behavior due to soil friction angle, reinforcement type, and reinforecement length are analysed.

Soil nailing method is widely used in reinforcing slopes and excavating earth. The analysis of nail-reinforced slopes, in order to determine the economical length ratio and nail angle, complicated analytical need to be applied by means of computer programs. Therefor this suggested Soil stability Chart for nailed slopes which may be very useful for pre-design, rapidly design, and final check. Three slope types, three nail length and three nail angles are selected for the stability analysis by using limit equilibrium method of Bishop and French Method. From the above results, this study propose the slope reinforced design charts for dry season and rainy season. This proposed reinforced design charts can check dry season as well as rainy season, also these charts can provide reinforcing requirement, soil nail's economical length ratio and nail angle as well.

This paper describes a new numerical analysis technique in stability analysis for a slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails. The installing effect of pressure grouted soil nails can be simulated in this method. Shear strength reduction method associated with finite element method is used for slope stability analysis. Factors of safety for a slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails are compared with those for a natural slope and a slope reinforced with gravity grouted soil nails in order to investigate their reinforcing effects. More than 50% increase in the factor of safety is obtained when the slope is reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails compared to the one with gravity grouted soil nails. The reinforcing effects of pressure grouted soil nails become obvious with increase in their length. The reinforcing mechanism of the pressure grouted soil nails for the slope stability can be explained by the slope failure surface expanding gradually toward the backfill. The increased stability of the slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails results mainly from their improved pull-out resistance.
This paper investigates the mechanical characteristics of monofilament-reinforced bottom ash mixtures for recycling dredged soil. Reinforced bottom ash mixture is a lightweight soil added with monofilament in order to increase its shear strength. Test specimens were fabricated by various mixing conditions including monofilament content, its length and its diameter. Then several series of unconfined compression tests and direct shear tests were performed to investigate mechanical characteristics of reinforced lightweight soil. The experimental results indicated that stress-strain behaviors of reinforced lightweight soil were strongly influenced by mixing conditions of monofilament content, its length and diameter. The compressive strength of reinforced lightweight soil generally increased by adding monofilament. In this test, the maximum increase in compressive strength was obtained at 0.5% content and 4cm length of monofilament. These results were similar to those of direct shear tests. The unconfined compressive strength of reinforced lightweight soil with monofilament of 0.25mm in diameter was greater than that of reinforced lightweight soil with monofilament of 0.5mm in diameter.
