  • This article is a review on the Korean geographers' China studies. There were severe limits to make China study in Korea during the Cold War Period. Since 1992, the fear of Korea-China establishment of diplomatic relation Korean geographers' China studies have been increased substantially Until December 2003, 89 articles were published on the journals related to geographical study, and 9 Ph.D. dissertations were submitted to graduate school departments of geography or geography education in Korea. This is an evidence of the rapid development of China study in Korean geographical society. Early 1990s, geographers of Yanbian university located in northeast China played an important role in the development of research. After the period, Korean domestic geographers' studies have also increased. There has been a distinct progress in the fields of economic and urban geography. However, the development of theory, diversification of themes, and professional study in the macro-regional scale could be proposed as the tasks of future research.

  • The purpose of this study is to search for a rationale of world geography curriculum. Elementary school children tend to get impressionistic and distorted information about other countries through snapshot TV programs. But they need to get more balanced understanding about them from the perspective of each country. Children's judgment about other countries, favorable or unfavorable, tends to be emotional, based on the first-order conditions of life in those regions, such as atmosphere, food, and habitat, and the symbolics of the place. But their systematic understanding about the relationship between their own life and the life of other locations or countries tends to be meager. It seems to be partly due to the practice of co-centric curricular construction. The geography curriculum may have to be in relation to other countries, from the regional geography of the third grade on.

  • This study is to analyze the base of selection and feature of description on Korea-related content in Japanese curriculum(geography and history) and high-school geography textbooks. Japanese curriculum requires that there are two or three neighbor countries to be selected and their contents consist of life and culture and have to compare with those of japan in view of understanding and respect on similarity and difference. The content of physical environment is only dealt as factors influencing on life and culture because regional teaming of neighbor countries focus on it. Dok-do is described with conflict region in most of textbooks. But some textbooks describe Dok-do with territory of Shimane-Hyun in Japan or devide like japanese territory on the map. There are described han-gul(Korean language), confucianism, buddhism and christianity, han-bok(Korean clothes), rice and soup, bulgogi(Korean meat dishes) and scissors, spoon and chopsticks, ondol(Korean floor heater), etc. with the cases of specific Korean life and culture. And, exchange between Korea and Japan focuses on more cultural view increasing recently than political and economical view. Then Japanese high-school geography textbooks humanize geography because of they focus on life and culture and promote not only knowledge and understanding but also altruism and empathy because they focus on similarity and difference through comparison between neighbor country and Japan. This shows how to able to practice regional teaming in globalization and multicultural society.

The history Korean economic geography can be divided into four periods: 'period of cradle' (1956-1962), 'period of establishment' (1963-later 1970s)', 'period of leap (the former half of 1980s-the former half of 1990s)', and 'period of transition (since later 1990s)'. Many departments of geography education and geography have been founded in the 'period of establishment' and 'period of leap'. Among the total research matters (1,621), 44.4 percent of research results have been made in 2000s and the most researched field was that of manufacturing geography, which occupied 27.7 percent. In the approach methods, about two-thirds of the results are the empirical inductive approach and the research frameworks method which clarified the regional structures and theory of spatial system occupied each about 40 percent. In the future, each research field of Korean economic geography is expected to take more serious view of nature environment, thorough regional survey, and preference of economy-society-culture-knowledge in the research framework of spatial network theory.

The purpose of this paper is to explain TAENGNIGI in modem geomorphological viewpoint and then, lay the foundation for establising Korean style geomorphological terms. It also analyzes TAENGNIGI from Lee, Jung-Hwan(the authority of TAENGNIGI's geomorphological viewpoint. The main results are summarized as follows. Firstly, It is estimated that TAENGNIGI is a geography book including human and physical geography. Secondly, in spite of Lee, Jung-Hwan's some metaphysical explanation of feng-shui in TAENGNIGI. his geomorphological appreciative eye is excellent. Thirdly, it is possible that a Korean style geomorphological term will be established based upon the result of this paper on TAENGNIGI. Fourthly, Lee, Jung-Hwan indicted geography(地理), profit(生利), human nature(人心), landscape(山水) as factors in selecting of people's dwelling place(可居地) and he described that geography(mainly physical geography) was mostly important among the four factors mentioned in selecting of people's dwelling place. Especially he also mentioned that good landscapes have a favorable influence upon the forming of people's character.

  • In this study we reviewed how acid rain as the global environmental problems was dealt with geography textbooks from Korea and England. The results are as follows. First, unlike geography textbooks from England, the concept and criteria of acid rain are not explained exactly in Korea geography textbooks. Second, whereas the cause of acid rain was explained with natural and artificial factors in geography textbooks from England, in Korea the artificial factors only were explained. But if the artificial factors only will be introduced to students, they may misunderstand about the acid rain. Third, the results and policies of acid rain were provided in geography textbooks from Korea and England. But whereas they were deal with separately in Korea, in textbooks from England they were provided with their patterns and concrete cases. So it is necessary to provide the exact concept, results and processes of the global environmental problems structurally in geography textbooks. And it is necessary to provide the results and their policies of the global environmental problems with concrete cases for students' understanding and sympathy about them. If the concepts and causes of global environmental problems are not understood previously, it is possible to stimulate only the moral and ethical aspects too much when the results and policies of them is introduced in geography textbooks.

  • This study examines American geography educators' familiarity and knowledge of Korea, their perception on sovereignty education, and their knowledge on Korea's sovereignty issues using the survey conducted at the annual conference of the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) in the United States in 2010 and 2012. This study also analyzes how much these knowledge and perception influence on values of sovereignty education and Korea's sovereignty issues and further investigates proper educational approaches on territorial issues in Northeast Asia. Knowledge on the geography of Korea of American geography educators is higher than their knowledge on Korean culture. Both experiences attending educational programs about Korea and visiting Korea further enhance their knowledge on the geography of Korea and Korean culture. They agree the importance of sovereignty education in geography education and believe that sovereignty education should promote students' sense of patriotism and encourage students to be global citizens who promote public interests. However, they value less on teaching on the economic value of their own country's territory and students' ability to understand territorial conflicts with other countries. American geography educators' perception on sovereignty education improves their familiarity with and knowledge of Korean territorial issues. This study identifies that providing opportunities to learn about Korea and Korean territorial issues can maximize geography educators' accessibility to Korean territorial issues, regardless of their interest in territorial issues. These findings help Korean government develops better strategies for formulating and implementing future international public relations practices for Korean territorial issues.
