Mechanical Properties of Early Strength Mortar with Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag and Expansive Additive (고로슬래그미분말 및 팽창재를 혼입한 조강형 모르타르의 역학적 특성)

  • In this study, the effects of ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS) and expansive additive(EA) on early strength mortar were examined for the purpose of reducing carbon and improving cement performance. As a result, ealry strength Portland cement(EPC) tended to decrease in flow compared to ordinary Portland cement(OPC), but binder with EPC and GGBFS was possible to obtain higher liquidity than OPC. EPC showed higher compressive strength and shrinkage than OPC. The compressive strength of specimen with EPC and GGBFS was reduced proportionally to the replacement ratio of GGBFS. The replacement ratio of GGBFS above the compressive strength equivalent to OPC was higher under low temperature conditions. The use of GGBFS resulted in high shrinkage compared to OPC, and this characteristic was even greater under low temperature conditions. The shrinkage of specimen with EA was decreased in early ages, but was higher than the OPC in long-term ages.

A Study of the Effect of the Permeability and Selectivity on the Performance of Membrane System Design (분리막 투과도와 분리도 인자의 시스템 설계 효과 연구)

  • Manufacturing membrane materials with high selectivity and permeability is quite desirable but practically not possible, since the permeability and selectivity are usually inversely proportional. From the viewpoint of reducing the cost of $CO_2$ capture, module performance is even more important than the performance of membrane materials itself, which is affected by the permeance of the membrane (P, stagecut) and selectivity (S). As a typical example, when the mixture with a composition of 13% $CO_2$ and 87% of $N_2$ is fed into the module with 10% stage cut and selectivity 5, in the 10 parts of the permeate, $CO_2$ represents 4.28 parts and $N_2$ represents 5.72 parts. In this case, the $CO_2$ concentration in the permeate is 42.8% and the recovery rate of $CO_2$ in this first separation appears as 4.28/13 = 32.9%. When permeance and selectivity are doubled, however, from 10% to 20% and from 5 to 10, respectively, the $CO_2$ concentration in the permeant becomes 64.5% and the recovery rate is 12.9/13 = 99.2%. Since in this case, most of the $CO_2$ is separated, this may be the ideal condition. For a given feed concentration, the $CO_2$ concentration in the separated gas decreases if permeance is larger than the threshold value for complete recovery at a given selectivity. Conversely, for a given permeance, increasing the selectivity over the threshold value does not improve the process further. For a given initial feed gas concentration, if permeance or selectivity is larger than that required for the complete separation of $CO_2$, the process becomes less efficient. From all these considerations, we can see that there exists an optimum design for a given set of conditions.

  • Reducing the emission of carbon dioxide, which is the main contributor to the green house effect, is becoming a global hot issue. Great attention has been thus given to utilization of carbon dioxide rather than just capturing and isolating it because it could convert carbon dioxide to high-value chemicals. In this paper, recent research trends are investigated on the catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide to syngas in the context of $CH_4$, dry-reforming, trireforming, and the electro-catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide through SOFC(Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) system. Research trends for utilizing syngas to high-value-added useful products, mainly fuel such as DME(Dimethyl Ether) are also discussed.

  • Environmental impact assessment techniques have been developed as a result of the worldwide efforts to reduce the environmental impact of global warming. By using the quantification method in the construction industry, it is now possible to manage the greenhouse gas is to systematically evaluate the impact on the environment over the entire construction process. In particular, the proportion of greenhouse gas emissions at the production stage of construction material occupied is high, and efforts are needed in the construction field. In this study, intended for concrete products for the construction materials, by using the LCA evaluation method, we compared the results of environmental impact assessment and carbon emissions of developing products that have been applied low-carbon technologies compared to existing products. As a result, by introducing a raw material of industrial waste, showed carbon reduction. Through a comparison of the carbon emission reduction effect of low-carbon technologies, it is intended to provide academic data for the evaluation of greenhouse gases in the construction sector and the development of low-carbon technologies of the future.

  • The current focus of domestic car industry is moving from technological development to reducing greenhouse gas. This study investigates and measures the HVAC system and indoor air condition of highway buses, which is conducted to develop a HVAC system using natural energy in the future. The measurements show that thermal balance is not fulfilled because heating sources are randomly placed, and relative humidity is in the 20 percent range both in HVAC and non-HVAC systems, which is far below 40%, or the highest thermal comfort level. CO2 concentration was found to be an average of 1500 ppm, but not more than 2522 ppm with 15 persons on board, and with 29 persons on board, an average of 2053 ppm, but not more than 3066 ppm, both of which far exceed allowed CO2 concentration level, or 1000 ppm. Generally, highway buses drop by rest stops and open doors for 15 to 20 minutes for getting in fresh air. But its air improvement effect is temporary, and it exacerbates indoor air condition.

  • This paper describes the adherence phenomenon, including the tribological characteristics, of a low-pressure fuel pump in a diesel engine for an excavator. Most fuel pumps of a diesel-engine excavator are of the fixed-quantity-gear type and have low pressure. However, the developed pumps develop problems in the pumping system owing to performance instability. Cavitation, which is the main obstacle to stable driving in the pump, occurs between an idle gear and the housing to produce a serious adherence problem. The present study not only examined how to suppress cavitation in a pump but also developed a simple method to improve pump performance through the early creation of a lubrication film with a phosphoric acid coating on the surface of the idle gear. The results showed that the coating successfully prevents breakage of the idle gear due to adherence.

  • The paper describes a study of the variation of the NO production emitted from turbulent propane flames established on a practical combustor where a primary and a secondary fuel lines are installed. The flowrate of the secondary fuel is pulsated or added in addition to that of the primary fuel which constrantly flows to the nozzle of the burner. Two modes depending on the positions of supplying the secondary fuel are performed; one is for its position to be placed at the center of the primary fuel tube and the other around the stabilization baffle. The mean concentrations of gas species, $O_2,\;Co\;CO_2,\;NO$, and HC(unburnt hydrocarbones) have been measured at the exit of the combustor. As equivalence ration $({\Phi})$ is increased the profile of the NO concentration on the latter mode rises slowly less than that on the former one. In the range of ${\Phi}=0.5$ to 0.54 the NO production is reduced by about 35% more on the latter mode than on the former one. The influence of pulsating the secondary fuel on the variation of the NO concentration doesn't appear at both modes.

  • Considerable attention has been given to developing methodologies to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide from industry to meet strengthened environmental regulations. In this article, recent research trends on dry reforming of methane as an alternative method to reduce $CO_2$ emission from large scale industrial processes are addressed. To efficiently provide the energy needed in this strong endothermic reaction without additional $CO_2$ emission, it seems to be desirable to adopt autothermal reaction mode. The produced synthesis gas could be used as a reducing gas, or a feedstock for synthesis of chemicals and fuels.

  • Fuel consumption in fisheries is a primary concern due to environmental effects and costs to fishermen. Much research has been carried out to reduce the fuel consumption related to fishing operations. The fuel consumption of fishing gear during fishing operation is generally related to hydrodynamic resistance on the gear. This research demonstrates a new approach using numerical methods to reduce fuel consumption. By designing the fishing gear using drawing software, the whole and partial resistance force on the gear can be calculated as a result of simulations. The simulation results will suggest suitable materials or gear structure for reducing the hydrodynamic forces on the gear while maintaining the performance of the gear. This research will helpful to reduce the $CO_2$ emissions from fishing operations and lead to reduce fishing costs due to fuel savings.

Surface Coating and Electrochemical Properties of LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 Polyaniline Composites as an Electrode for Li-ion Batteries

  • A new cathode material based on Li$Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ (LNCA)/polyaniline (Pani) composite was prepared by in situ self-stabilized dispersion polymerization in the presence of LNCA. The materials were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical properties including galvanostatic charge-discharge ability, cyclic voltammetry (CV), capacity, cycling performance, and AC impedance were measured. The synthesized LNCA/Pani had a similar particle size to LNCA and exhibited good electrochemical properties at a high C rate. Pani (the emeraldine salt form) interacts with metal-oxide particles to generate good connectivity. This material shows good reversibility for Li insertion in discharge cycles when used as the electrode of lithium ion batteries. Therefore, the Pani coating is beneficial for stabilizing the structure and reducing the resistance of the LNCA. In particular, the LNCA/Pani material has advantageous electrochemical properties.
