Vegetation Type and Stand Structure of Pinus densiflora Forests in Kangwon Northern Region in Korea (강원북부지역 소나무림의 식생유형과 임분구조)

  • The objectives of this study were to analyze vegetation type and stand structure of the red pine (Pinus densiflora) in Kangwon northern region for stable and sustainable management forests. The pine forests in study sites were classified into 3 communities, 5 groups, and 2 subgroups, total 7 vegetation units. Species with constance degree of more than 61% were P. densiflora, Quercus mongolica, Lindera obtusiloba, Spodiopogon sibiricus, Atractylodes japonica, Rhododendron mucronulatum, and Carex humilis. They were showing different characteristics by pattern according to their growing district. In the importance value (I.V.) analysis of each layer, P. densiflora showed highly in tree layer while in other layers Quercus spp. was high. Especially, young P. densiflora tree hardly appeared in the herb layer, but broad-leaved trees and shrub species showed high I.V.. Furthermore, the annual ring growth of P. densiflora was reduced while that of Q. spp. increased. According to analysis of stand structures and annual ring growths, it is considered that appropriate silvicultual practice methods should be employed to remove rival broad-leaved species for maintenance of sustainable red pine forests considering the characteristics of each stand.

Properties of Epoxy Adhesive Modified with Siloxane-imide (실록산 이미드로 개질된 변성 에폭시 수지의 물성)

  • Peel strength of epoxy adhesives can be increased by adding some amounts of XNBR. In this case, thermal resistance of the adhesive will be decreased by decrease of glass transition temperature of the adhesive. Epoxy resin modified with siloxane-imide was synthesized to improve thermal resistance and peel strength of the adhesive, after that the properties of modified epoxy resin were compared with the commercial epoxy resin. When 5% XNBR was added to 30% modified epoxy resin, this adhesive showed 0.42 N/mm of peel strength and $155^{\circ}C$ of glass transition temperature. These properties are enough compared to the required properties by the industry, i.e., 0.3 N/mm and $150^{\circ}C$, respectively. Weight loss of the modified epoxy resin by the treatment of nitric acid and 0.1N NaOH was reduced, but weight gain by the humid condition was increased by the presence of benzene ring and imide ring. 30% modified epoxy resin blended with 5% XNBR showed 220% improvement in tensile strength and elongation compared to the case of common epoxy resin. This is due to the flexibility of the siloxane in the modified epoxy resin.

Hybrid All-Reduce Strategy with Layer Overlapping for Reducing Communication Overhead in Distributed Deep Learning (분산 딥러닝에서 통신 오버헤드를 줄이기 위해 레이어를 오버래핑하는 하이브리드 올-리듀스 기법)

  • Since the size of training dataset become large and the model is getting deeper to achieve high accuracy in deep learning, the deep neural network training requires a lot of computation and it takes too much time with a single node. Therefore, distributed deep learning is proposed to reduce the training time by distributing computation across multiple nodes. In this study, we propose hybrid allreduce strategy that considers the characteristics of each layer and communication and computational overlapping technique for synchronization of distributed deep learning. Since the convolution layer has fewer parameters than the fully-connected layer as well as it is located at the upper, only short overlapping time is allowed. Thus, butterfly allreduce is used to synchronize the convolution layer. On the other hand, fully-connecter layer is synchronized using ring all-reduce. The empirical experiment results on PyTorch with our proposed scheme shows that the proposed method reduced the training time by up to 33% compared to the baseline PyTorch.

  • In this paper, a 1.5V 256kb eFlash memory IP with low area DC-DC converter is designed for battery application. Therefore, in this paper, 5V NMOS precharging transistor is used instead of cross-coupled 5V NMOS transistor, which is a circuit that precharges the voltage of the pumping node to VIN voltage in the unit charge pump circuit for the design of a low-area DC-DC converter. A 5V cross-coupled PMOS transistor is used as a transistor that transfers the boosted voltage to the VOUT node. In addition, the gate node of the 5V NMOS precharging transistor is made to swing between VIN voltage and VIN+VDD voltage using a boost-clock generator. Furthermore, to swing the clock signal, which is one node of the pumping capacitor, to full VDD during a small ring oscillation period in the multi-stage charge pump circuit, a local inverter is added to each unit charge pump circuit. And when exiting from erase mode and program mode and staying at stand-by state, HV NMOS transistor is used to precharge to VDD voltage instead of using a circuit that precharges the boosted voltage to VDD voltage. Since the proposed circuit is applied to the DC-DC converter circuit, the layout area of the 256kb eFLASH memory IP is reduced by about 6.5% compared to the case of using the conventional DC-DC converter circuit.

A 15 nm Ultra-thin Body SOI CMOS Device with Double Raised Source/Drain for 90 nm Analog Applications

  • Fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) devices with a 15 nm SOI layer thickness and 60 nm gate lengths for analog applications have been investigated. The Si selective epitaxial growth (SEG) process was well optimized. Both the single- raised (SR) and double-raised (DR) source/drain (S/D) processes have been studied to reduce parasitic series resistance and improve device performance. For the DR S/D process, the saturation currents of both NMOS and PMOS are improved by 8 and 18%, respectively, compared with the SR S/D process. The self-heating effect is evaluated for both body contact and body floating SOI devices. The body contact transistor shows a reduced self-heating ratio, compared with the body floating transistor. The static noise margin of an SOI device with a $1.1\;{\mu}m^2$ 6T-SRAM cell is 190 mV, and the ring oscillator speed is improved by 25 % compared with bulk devices. The DR S/D process shows a higher open loop voltage gain than the SR S/D process. A 15 nm ultra-thin body (UTB) SOI device with a DR S/D process shows the same level of noise characteristics at both the body contact and body floating transistors. Also, we observed that noise characteristics of a 15 nm UTB SOI device are comparable to those of bulk Si devices.

Interaction of Cu(II)-meso-tetrakis(n-N-methylpyridiniumyl)porphyrin (n = 2,3,4) with Native and Synthetic Polynucleotides Probed by Polarized Spectroscopy

  • The interactions of Cu(II)-meso-Tetrakis(n-N-methylpyridiniumyl)porphyrin (n = 2,3,4), respectively referred to as o-, m- and p-CuTMPyP, and DNA, poly$[d(A-T)_2]$ and poly$[d(G-C)_2]$ were investigated by circular and linear dichroism (CD and LD). In the o-CuTMPyP case, in which the rotation of the pyridinium ring is prevented, the shape of the CD spectrum when associated to DNA and poly$[d(A-T)_2]$ resembles and is characterized by a positive band at a low drug to DNA concentration ratio (R ratio) and is bisignate at a high R ratio. The former CD spectrum shape has been attributed to porphyrin that is bound monomerically outside of DNA while the latter can be attributed to those that are stacked. When o-CuTMPyP is bound to poly$[d(G-C)_2]$, the excitonic CD appeared at a relatively high R ratio. In contrast, a characteristic negative CD band in the Soret region was apparent for both m- and p-CuTMPyP when bound to DNA and poly$[d(G-C)_2]$ at the low R ratios, indicating that the porphyrin molecule intercalates. However, the DNA is bent near the intercalation site and the plane of the porphyrin molecule tilts relative to the DNA helix axis, as judged by the magnitude of the reduced LD. Various stacking patterns were identified by the shape of the CD spectrum for m- and p-CuTMPyP when bound to poly$[d(A-T)_2]$. Three species for the former complex and two for the latter complex were found which may reflect the extent of the stacking.

Positional Cloning of Novel Genes in Zebrafish Developmental Mutants

  • The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is now the pre-eminent vertebrate model system for clarification of the roles of specific genes and signaling pathways in development. I will talk about positional cloning of two developmental mutants in zebrafish. The first mutant is headless: The vertebrate organizer can induce a complete body axis when transplanted to the ventral side of a host embryo by virtue of its distinct head and trunk inducing properties. Wingless/Wntantagonists secreted by the organizer have been identified as head inducers. Their ectopic expression can promote head formation, whereas ectopic activation of Wnt signalling during early gastrulation blocks head formation. These observations suggest that the ability of head inducers to inhibit Wntsignalling during formation of anterior structures is what distinguishes them from trunk inducers that permit the operation of posteriorizing Wnt signals. I describe the zebrafish headless (hdl) mutant and show that its severe head defects are due to a mutation in T-cell factor-3 (Tcf3), a member of the Tcf/Lef family. Loss of Tcf3 function in the hdl mutant reveals that hdl represses Wnt target genes. I provide genetic evidence that a component of the Wntsignalling pathway is essential in vertebrate head formation and patterning. Second mutant is mind bomb: Lateral inhibition, mediated by Notch signaling, leads to the selection of cells that are permitted to become neurons within domains defined by proneuralgene expression. Reduced lateral inhibition in zebrafish mib mutant embryos permits too many neural progenitors to differentiate as neurons. Positional cloning of mib revealed that it is a gene in the Notch pathway that encodes a RING ubiquitin ligase. Mib interacts with the intracellular domain of Delta to promote its ubiquitylation and internalization. Cell transplantation studies suggest that mib function is essential in the signaling cell for efficient activation of Notch in neighboring cells. (중략)

Characterization of Tailoring Genes Involved in the Modification of Geldanamycin Polyketide in Streptomyces hygroscopicus JCM4427

  • Geldanamycin and its analogs are important anticancer agents that inhibit the newly targeted heat-shock protein (Hsp) 90, which is a chaperone protein in eukaryotic cells. To resolve which geldanamycin biosynthetic genes are responsible for particular post-polyketide synthase (PKS) processing steps and in which order the reactions occur, we individually inactivated candidate genes in Streptomyces hygroscopicus subsp. duamyceticus JCM4427 and isolated and elucidated the structures of intermediates from each mutant. The results indicated that gel7 governs at least one of the benzoquinone ring oxidation steps. The gel16 was found to be involved in double-bond formation between C-4 and C-5 of 4,5-dihydrogeldanamycin, which confirmed our previous findings that this double bond is reduced during the post-PKS modification of the polyketide assembly. In addition, pro-geldanamycin, which does not possess a double bond at C-4/5, was purified from the gel7 and gel8 double-gene-inactivated mutant.

Effect of acid whey and freeze-dried cranberries on lipid oxidation and fatty acid composition of nitrite-/nitrate-free fermented sausage made from deer meat

  • Objective: This study evaluated the effect of acid whey and freeze-dried cranberries on the physicochemical characteristics, lipid oxidation and fatty acid composition of nitrite-free fermented sausage made from deer meat and pork fat. Antioxidant interactions between acid whey and cranberry compounds were also explored. Methods: Four formulations of fermented venison sausage were prepared: F1 (control), F2 (with 5% liquid acid whey), F3 (with 0.06% of freeze-dried cranberries), and F4 (with 5% liquid acid whey and 0.06% of freeze-dried cranberries). Each sample was analyzed for pH, water activity ($a_w$), heme iron content, 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value and conjugated dienes at the end of the manufacturing process and at 30 and 90 days of refrigerated storage. Fatty acid composition was measured once at the end of the manufacturing process. Results: At the end of ripening, all samples presented statistically different values for a pH range of 4.47 to pH 4.59. The sum of the unsaturated fatty acids was higher, while the conjugated diene and the TBARS values were lower in sausages with freeze-dried cranberries as compared to the control sausage. The highest content of heme iron (21.52 mg/kg) at day 90 was found in the sausage formulation with the addition of freeze-dried cranberries, which suggests that the addition of cranberries stabilized the porphyrin ring of the heme molecule during storage and thereby reduced the release of iron. The use of liquid acid whey in combination with cranberries appears to not be justified in view of the oxidative stability of the obtained products. Antimicrobial efficacy of endophytic Penicillium purpurogenum ED76 against clinical pathogens and its possible mode of action

  • This study was aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Penicillium purpurogenum ED76 on several clinically important microorganisms. The endophytic fungus P. purpurogenum ED76 was previously isolated from Swietenia macrophylla leaf. The antimicrobial efficacy of P. purpurogenum ED76 dichloromethane extract was determined via disc diffusion and broth microdilution assay. A kill curve study was conducted and the morphology of extract treated bacterial cells were viewed under scanning electron microscope. The dichloromethane extract showed significant inhibitory activity on 4 test bacteria and 2 test yeasts. The minimal inhibitory concentration of the extract ranged from 125 to $1,000{\mu}g/ml$, which indicates the different susceptibility levels of the test microorganisms to the fungal extract. The kill curve study has revealed a concentration-dependent inhibition for all test microorganisms. With the increase of the extract concentration, the microbial growth was significantly reduced. The scanning electron micrograph of dichloromethane extract-treated Staphylococcus aureus cells showed the total damage of the cells. The cell wall invagination of the bacterial cells also indicates the loss of cellular materials and metabolic activity. The gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis of the extract also showed that the major compound was stigmasterol, which constitutes 45.30% of the total area. The dichloromethane extract of P. purpurogenum ED76 exhibited significant inhibitory activity on several clinically important bacteria and yeasts. The study proposed a possible mode of action that the extract cause significant damage to the morphology of S. aureus cells.
