  • In this study, a liquid carbonation method was applied for producing precipitate calcium carbonate by liquid-liquid reaction. We recycled the recycling water of ready-mixed concrete, one of construction waste for use source of carbonate ion. A supernatant separated from the recycling water of ready-mixed concrete, as a result of ICP analysis of a cation, $Ca^{2+}$ was contained up to 1100 ppm. We used MEA as a $CO_2$ absorbent for the liquid carbonation. A precipitate $CaCO_3$ was produced at more than MEA 20 wt%. The precipitate $CaCO_3$ as a final product was separated and dried. The result of XRD was confirmed the generation of $CaCO_3$ to calcite structure.

  • Waste aluminum dross was leached with sulfuric acid to prepare alum used for water treatment product. The remained metallic aluminum in the waste aluminum dross was extracted into the solution to make aluminum sulfate solution. The solution could be used as alum for water treatment product after adjusting the required alumina concentration and the basicity. Comparing to the conventional method for alum using aluminum hydroxide, material cost could be saved in this method. Also, there is an additional merit in view of recycling of the waste aluminum dross by reducing the amount of waste dross to be landfilled.

  • Nitrogen removal, nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) emission and microbial community in sequencing batch and continuous-flow intermittent aeration processes were investigated. Two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) and two continuous-flow multiple anoxic and aerobic reactors (CMRs) were operated under high dissolved oxygen (DO) (SBR-H and CMR-H) and low DO (SBR-L and CMR-L) concentrations, respectively. Nitrogen removal was enhanced under CMR and low DO conditions (CMR-L). The highest total inorganic nitrogen removal efficiency of 91.5% was achieved. Higher nitrifying and denitrifying activities in SBRs were observed. CMRs possessed higher $N_2O$ emission factors during nitrification in the presence of organics, with the highest $N_2O$ emission factor of 60.7% in CMR-L. SBR and low DO conditions promoted $N_2O$ emission during denitrification. CMR systems had higher microbial diversity. Candidatus Accumulibacter, Nitrosomonadaceae and putative denitrifiers ($N_2O$ reducers and producers) were responsible for $N_2O$ emission.

  • A new technique for recycling of white water was developed in order to reduce the calcium hardness in a closed OCC recycling system. Calcium ions present in the white water were precipitated as calcium carbonate by reacting with sodium carbonate, and the precipitated $CaCO_3$ was removed from the system using a flotation fractionation method, which has been commonly used in deinking process. In the flotation stage, a mixed gas of $CO_2$-air was purged into the flotation cell because the pH of $Na_2CO_3$-treated white water was reduced to neutral by $CO_2$ gas. Since $CaCO_3$ precipitate tends to stick onto fine fiber surface and then selectively removed from the white water, a proper amount of suspended solid in white water acts as an important factor for deciding the removal efficiency. By the application of $Na_2CO_3$ addition-$CO_2$ flotation to the short circulated white water, the calcium hardness was significantly reduced by 87% and more. Removal of calcium ions with fine fibers led to a drainage improvement, reduction of fresh water consumption, and enhanced efficiency of wet-end chemicals.

  • A new technique for recycling process water was developed in order to reduce the calcium hardness of the closed OCC recycling system. Calcium ions present in the white water were precipitated as calcium carbonate by a reaction with sodium carbonate and the CaCO$_3$precipitates were easily removed from the system by a dissolved air flotation(DAF) method. After the DAF stage, CO$_2$-gas was purged into the water because the pH of Na$_2$CO$_3$-treated white water was reduced to neutral by CO$_2$gas. Since CaCO$_3$precipitate tends to stick onto the fine fiber surface and then is selectively removed from the water, a proper amount of suspended solid in the process water acts as an important factor in deciding the removal efficiency. By the application of Na$_2$CO$_3$addition - DAF - CO$_2$purging to the short circulated white water the calcium hardness was significantly reduced by 92% and more. The removal of calcium ions with fine fibers led to drainage improvement, reduction of fresh water consumption, and enhanced efficiency of wet-end chemicals.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the air lift reactors (ALR) by variations of HRT and recycling rate. Air lift reactor was composed of bioreactor and clarifier above it. To remove organic matters and nitrogen through the formation of microbic film and filtration, bio-filter reactors were filled with clay, glass, bead, waste plastic, respectively. Influent wastewater was fed to biofilter reactor, and effluent wastewater from bio-filter reactor was injected ALR again, instead of adding external carbon source. Effluent BOD concentration was satisfied with lower than 10 mg/L in recycling rate 100% regardless of the variation of HRT and the kinds of media materials. In HRT 4 hr, recycling rate 100%, BOD removal efficiency rate was from about 85 to 90%, COD removal efficiency rate was higher than 90%. Effluent TN concentration was satisfied with less than 20 mg/L, if HRT was maintained by over than 6 hr regardless of recycling rate and media materials. Over than HRT was 4 hr, microbes concentration in air lift reactor was maintained over than 2,500 mg/L constantly, not sensitive to environmental condition, and organic removal was effective as it was higher.

  • For the development of reformation material of soft ground using the LD slag, the relation to the particle condition of LD slag and the pH behavior of slag dissolution water, extraction properties of slag, and origination of white water were investigated. When the LD slag is mixed with sea water, the pH of solution ranged between 9.47 and 10.0. On the other hand, when mixed with distilled water, the pH was about 10.4 to 12.1. For the as-received slag and the aged slag in sea water, a pH of 11.5 to 12.0 was observed when the particle size was less than 0.5mm. For the reoxidized slag in seawater, the pH of the solution was lower than 9.5 when the particle size was bigger than 0.075mm. For the aged slag and reoxidized slag, the pH of the solution remained constant when the addition ratio of sea water to the slag was higher than 500 times. The main elements dissolved from the slag were Ca and Mg ions. When the pH went over 9.0, the white water started to font which was caused by the CaCO$_3$and Mg(OH)$_2$.

  • Two conceptual flowsheets were developed for recycling used nuclear fuel. One flowsheet was developed for recycling used oxide nuclear fuel from light water reactors while the other was developed for recycling used metal fuel from fast spectrum reactors. Both flowsheets were developed from a set of design principles including efficient actinide recovery, nonproliferation, waste minimization and commercial viability. Process chemistry is discussed for each unit operation in the flowsheet.

  • To develop a Mg-Zeolite for simultaneous recovery of the N and the P from sewage water, the natural zeolite was treated with 20% $MgCl_2$ solution by changing the pH the temperature and the treating time of the solution. And the contents of Ca Fe Na K Mg of Mg-Zeolite were analyzed by ICP. The optimum treatment condition for Mg-Zeolite was induced to pH 7.0 $50^{\circ}C$ in 20% $MgCl_2$ solution and for 80min treatment. And the Na and the K ions in natural zeolite are significant factors for Mg exchange in the zeolite.
