  • 20 million tons of coal ash has been produced in Korea annually. This causes the environmental problems and the cost of land for ash pond. However the amount of coal ash for recycling is small because of the low level of recycling technology and the ignorance. As the coal ash has the significant engineering properties, it can be utilized as soft ground stabilizer, backfill materials and so forth. The purpose of this paper is to summarize some of the recycling methods of coal ash. One is structural backfill materials, the other is flowable fill. Optimal mixture ratio(fly ash : bottom ash) is determined for structural backfill materials and the model test is performed. The model test accompanied with physical tests were executed for identifying that the flowable fly ash can be used as fill materials such as trench back filling.

  • More than 8M tons of coal ashes are generated from coal-fired thermal power plants every year in Korea. Excluding the recycled portion (Current recycling rate: approximately 70%), all of the generated coal ashes end up in coastal landfills. Currently, the difficulties faced in establishing new ash treatment fields are attributed to the concerns raised over the environmental impacts caused by the landfills at individual plant facilities. Given the number of coal-fired thermal power plants to be built in the future (reflected in the 7th Basic Plan for Long-term Electricity Supply and Demand), building new ash treatment fields or seeking a new treatment plan seems unavoidable. Based upon a review of coal ash and its management, this study concluded that the most effective and fundamental strategy to minimize the environmental impacts resulting from coal ash landfills is to avoid constructing new coal-fired powerplants and furthermore, suggests that the practice of beneficial use and recycling the produced coal wastes should be encouraged.

  • The purpose of this paper is to recycle coal ash as structural backfill materials from electric power plants. Two million tons of coal ash are produced annually. The laboratory test was executed for the basic compatibility as substitution for structural backfill materials and the optimal mixture ratio(fly ash : bottom ash) was decided. In addition the model test was performed using medium scale earth pressure model with small size earth pressure cells model box data logger and some other apparatuses. Mixed coal ash and excellent backfill materials(coheisonless soil SW) were compared in the view of lateral earth pressure variation depending on wall displacement. The reduction of earth pressure when coal ash was used as a bockfill material was monitored comparing to that of cohesionless soil. the cost and environmental pollutants by treating coal ash can be reduced through developing the recycling technology.

  • The various recycling methods of mixed coal ash have been developed considerably and it's recycling quantity has been increased. However, the more relatively finer grain content of coal ash in ash pond is increased the more it's quantity is increased in recycling as products for drainage in soft ground etc. Accordingly, the geotechnical properties of mixed coal ash in ash pond would be inferior and it's recycling rate should reach the limitations in increase. In this study, to recycle mixed coal ash contained fine grain in considerably amount as products for strength, etc. By adding binder to it and manifesting, it's compressive strength is stronger than the criteria, these are suggested; 1) the variety of compressive strength test performed on mixed coal ash of various grain distributions as main material, 2) the kind of binder, it's mixing quantity and the optimum content rate range of fine grain coal ash that the compressive strength stronger than a certain compressive strength is manifested. Cement is more excellent than quicklime as binder in manifesting stronger compressive strength and the sieve type to sort it is #40 sieve in order to recycle all mixed coal ash in ash pond efficiently as products for drainage as well as products for strength, etc. And, it could increase insufficient compressive strength remarkably that content of pure sand is more in the rate as pure sand and the part of mixed coal ash in ash pond to pass through #40 sieve is mixed in the ratio of 2 to 8.

  • Coal combustion products are generated during coal combustion and can be grouped into fly ash and bottom ash depending on collection methods. Fly ash and bottom ash can be recycled for various purposes based on their characteristics. Australia is the fourth largest coal production country in the world and reuses coal ash as cement, concrete, mine filler, and agricultural soil amendment. When fly ash is used as a supplement for cement and concrete, strength of the cement and the durability of the concrete can be improved. Use of coal combustion product for mine backfill stabilizes underground mine voids and stores a large amount of coal ash in the voids. Because of alkalinity of coal combustion products, it can neutralize acid mine drainage when used for mine backfill. In addition, it can be used as an agricultural soil amendment to improve acidity and physical properties of the soil and to supply plant nutrients. Recycling of fly ash in Australia will be further expanded because of its low trace element contents that can be toxic to plants and low radioactive element contents existing within soil background concentrations. The characteristics of coal combustion products are related to the characteristics of the coal used for combustion, and since Korea imports coal from Australia, Korean coal combustion products also can be recycled for various purposes.

  • Coal briquette use has dramatically increased because of high oil prices. Hence, it is necessary to develop an environment-friendly recycling technique of the coal briquette ash. The coal briquette ash contains a large amount of an unburned carbon content and a mullite with high thermal property, so it is considered to be used as raw materials of sintered eco-brick. This study aimed to investigate on how the unburned carbon affects properties of the sintered eco-brick. The eco-brick was mixed with the ratio of 50 wt% coal briquette ash having the unburned carbon 10.5 wt% and 50 wt% cullet, then being sintered at $950^{\circ}C$, which of the compressive strength was in line with the first class of the sintered clay brick standard(KS L 4201). In particular, the compressive strength of the sintered eco-brick was equal to the first class of the KS L 4201 despite the increase of mixing ratio for coal briquette ash with 1.0 wt% unburned carbon to 70 wt%.

  • Coal ash is generated from coal-fired thermal power plants every year. The remaining quantity of coal ash ends up in the landfills except for the recycled portion, and the existing ash pond capacity is limited almost. Currently, the difficulties are faced in building a new ash treatment plant because of the concerns about the environmental impacts of landfills at individual plant facilities. In terms of minimizing the environmental impact, the recycling and effective uses of coal ash are recognized as urgent issues to be challenged. Accordingly, this study examines the obstacles in expanding the recycling of the coal ash in South Korea and proposes solutions based on the case study analysis. The analysis results are as follows: 1) specific recycling guidelines and standards are required to be established in accordance with the contact medium (soil, ground water, surface water and sea water) and the chemical. 2) by providing the recognition environmentally safe in recycling the coal ash, transparency in establishing the planning stages and active communication with the community through promotion and research are essentially needed. 3) practical support system is required to encourage the power plant companies to use the coal ash as beneficial use.

  • In the recycling of industrial waste unlike household waste, the legislation and the governmental systematic support, etc. were not also established due to an anxiety of hazard or harmfulness, etc. and a preconception. So the legislation and the system should be urgently established for the recycling of industrial waste. In this study, the environmental analyzing method of industrial waste-mixed coal ash in ash pond to recycle as a construction material is suggested by considering and analyzing test process and results about environmental impact factors of mixed coal ash. It is certified that there are not environmental problems in the recycling of mixed coal ash in ash pond as a construction material, according as its classification is general waste and each corresponding item of the leaching test result are satisfied with the 'environmental safety criteria' suggested in this study. And to build database, it is necessary to survey the environmental impact on surrounding areas with time after its recycling as a construction material.
