  • It is very necessary for the metal recycling industries and the researchers to understand the current status of demand and supply of non-ferrous metals and their scraps. Domestic demand and supply of non-ferrous metals and their scraps have been surveyed and reported on the journal of the Korean Institute of Resources Recycling since ten years before. However, it was confined to six major non-ferrous metals such as copper, aluminum, zinc, lead, nickel and magnesium because there are so many kind of non-ferrous metals. In this article also, demand and supply of these non-ferrous metals in addition tin during recent five years (2014 ~ 2018) in Korean markets were reviewed, and their recycling ratio of scraps were briefly estimated. The statistical data were mainly cited from the data issued by Korea Customs Service (KCS) and Korea Non-Ferrous Metal Association, and some fragmental published review articles from magazines and other technical reports.

  • The use of rare metals in increasing along with the growth of the Fourth industrials revolution and new energy industries, and the recycling of rare metals becomes more important as the used of rare metals increase. In this paper, the domestic and international quality standards of tin metal, one of the rare metals, and the performance test of recycled tin were investigated. As a results of the performance test, it was analyzed that there is no difference in performance between the natural and recycled tin.

  • ln this study, the questionnaire survey was performed to obtain the basic data on current situations and challengeable aspects of vermicomposting industries. The questionnaire contained the four main categories such as vermicomposting facilities, feeling marerials, earthworm breeding and cast handling. The results was summarized as followings: 1. Vermicomposting facilities area was becoming larger, and earthworm feed was also expending to various organic sludges. These trends showed that Vermicomposting is being enlightened to treat and recycle the organic wastes in Korea. 2. Present Vermicomposting technology needs the broad land. Because of the high cost of land in Korea, the land saving technology such as multistage must be needed. And present operation practices are mostly based on human power, mechanization and automation is needed. Also, present control practices are based on individual experience need the scientific base control system. 3. Considering situations of organic wastes management in Korea, the technical development and the practical improvement of Vermicomposting as the waste recycling will be needed.

  • The cement industry, which is an energy-intensive and high carbon dioxide emission industry, requires strategy for carbon neutrality and sustainable development. Most domestic cement companies are generating electricity by waste heat recovery system to improve energy efficiency during cement processes; however, few studies exist on recycling of energy related to this. Certain countries with high cement production researched on modifying the conventional waste heat recovery system to maximize waste heat recovery using various methods such as applying the Rankine cycle depending on the temperature, comparing working fluids, applying two or more Rankine cycles, and combining with other industries. In this study, we reviewed the research direction for energy efficiency improvement by summarizing waste heat recovery and utilization methods in the domestic and overseas cement industries.

  • Multi-material design with metals and composites can keep structural functions as well as reduce the weight of automotive parts. However, recycling of automotive parts should be considered due to the increasing emphasis on the environments and pollutions. We derived the key issues for increasing the recycling rate of automotive parts by carrying out a survey targeting representatives and workers related with automotive recycling. The core of the key issues was the separation technology of adhesively bonded metal-composite hybrid structures, so we conducted the basic research and suggested the separation technology which can easily be adopted into the recycling industries.

  • Recycling of aluminum dross is an important issue in the secondary aluminum industries. In this study, aluminum dross generated in the domestic secondary aluminum industry was processed to use it as raw material for producing alumina refractories. Sample dross was classified according to its size. The dross smaller than 1 mm was leached with sodium hydroxide solution to extract the remained aluminum from the dross into the solution. and then aluminum hydroxide precipitate was recovered from the leach liquor. The waste residue in the leaching was washed, dried and roasted. Most remained metallic components in the residue was changed into oxide through the processes. The roasted dross was made into alumina castable refractories by mixing with aggregates and a binder. Bending strength of the tested castable specimen was over $25\;kg/\textrm{m}^2$ and compressive strength over $80\;kg/\textrm{cm}^2$, which satisfied the Korean Standard value respectively. From the results, it was suggested that this process could be applicable to recycling of aluminum dross.

  • Copper is used in many electronic components and construction parts due to its excellent electrical conductivity and heat transfer characteristics, and also used for pre-plating for double layer coating such as nickel, so that copper is an essential material in modern industry. Despite the expected increase of usage and importance on wiring, sensors and data equipment in the next generation industries, it is hard for securing stable copper supply and resource management resulting from the copper prices are fluctuating owing to the economic crisis in Europe, the low economic growth trend in China, and President Trump's commitment to public industrial facilities investment in U.S.. Since most of the domestic copper consumption is used by electrolytic copper cathode, we studied not only copper recycling technology which is being commercialized but also current research trend under the research stage. This study aims to examine the characteristics of each process and the areas where future recycling technology development is required.

  • DOWA group has been working on metal recycling applying the smelting and refining process of KOSAKA Smelter. DOWA has developed it's metal recycling technologies through the treatment of black ore(complex sulfide ores) that contain many kinds of non-ferrous metals. In addition to these special technologies, DOWA has strengthened its hydrometallurgical process of precious metals and ability to deal with low-grade materials such as used electrical appliances or vehicles. On the other hand, JX Nippon Mining & Metals Corporation(JX-NMMC) carries out its metal recycling and industrial waste treatment businesses employing advanced separation, extraction and refining technologies developed through its extensive experience in the smelting of non-ferrous metals. JX-NMMC collects approximately 100,000t/y of copper and precious metal scraps from waste sources such as electronic parts, mobile phones, catalytic converters, print circuit boards and gold plated parts. These items are recycled through the smelting and refining operations of Saganoseki smelter and Hitachi Metal-recycling complex(HMC). In this like, metal recycling industries combined with environmental business service in Japan have been developed through excellent technologies for mineral processing and non-ferrous smelting. Also, both group, Dowa and JX-NMMC, were contributed to establish Japan's recycling-oriented society as the typical leading company of non-ferrous smelting. Now. it is an important issue to set up the collection system for e-waste.

  • Typical examples as unrecycled materials in Korea were Zinc from the electric arc furnace dust (EAF Dust), and Moiybdenium and Vanadium from the desulfurizing spent catalyst of petrochemical industries. In the otherwise, though recovery of valuable metals from the waste electronic scrap such as printed circuit boards (PCBs) and platinum group metals (PGM) from the waste automobile catalyst have been interesting issues, it is difficult to collect the exact informations or statistics on their material flow system. In this article, The current domestic research trends for unrecycled or less recycled materials have been reviewed, and material flow and recycling technologies on the desulfurizing spent catalyst were surveyed.
