  • The effect of diisocyanate type on the decomposition temperature of polyurethane (PU) hydrolysis was investigated in a subcritical water medium up to 250℃. PU samples were prepared using different types of diisocyanate: two aromatic diisocyanates (4,4'-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and methyl phenylene diisocyanate (TDI)), one unbranched aliphatic diisocyanate (hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI)), and two cyclic aliphatic diisocyanates (4,4'-methylene dicyclohexyl diisocyanate (H12MDI) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI)). The pressure had no effect on hydrolysis in the range of 70-250 bar. The decomposition temperature of the PU samples increased in the following order: TDI-PU (199℃) < H12MDI ≈ IPDI ≈ HDI (218-220℃) < MDI-PU (237℃). This order of increase in temperature is related to the electron-donating ability of the group to connected to the nitrogen of the urethane unit. When the temperature of the (PU + water) mixture reached the specific decomposition temperature, the PU samples hydrolyzed completely within 5 min into primary amine and 1,4-butanediol. The hydrolysis products from MDI-PU and H12MDI-PU were separated into a liquid phase rich in (BD + water) and a solid low phase rich in amine, whereas the products from TDI-, IPDI-, and HDI-PU existed in a single aqueous phase.

  • The pyrometallurgical nuclear fuel recycle process, called pyroprocessing, has been known as a promising nuclear fuel recycling technology. Pyroprocessing technology is crucial to advanced nuclear systems due to increased nuclear proliferation resistance and economic efficiency. The basic concept of pyroprocessing is group actinide recovery, which enhances the nuclear proliferation resistance significantly. One of the key steps in pyroprocessing is "electrowinning" which recovers group actinides with lanthanide from the spent nuclear fuels. In this study, a vertical cadmium distiller was manufactured. The evaporation rate of pure cadmium in vertical cadmium distiller varied from 12.3 to $40.8g/cm^2/h$ within a temperature range of 773 923 K and pressure below 0.01 torr. Uranium - cadmium alloy was fabricated by electrolysis using liquid cadmium cathode in a high purity argon atmosphere glove box. The distillation behavior of pure cadmium and cadmium in uranium - cadmium alloy was investigated. The distillation behavior of cadmium from this study could be used to develop an actinide recovery process from a liquid cadmium cathode in a cadmium distiller.

  • When we divide Environmental Ethics education into the elements of 'knowledge - emotion - behavior', we need to focus on 'knowledge' at high school level. In general Moral Education, 'knowledge - emotion - behavior' is a circular link, but as Environmental Ethics is a matter of 'consciousness', it is desirable to instruct with the process of 'knowledge>emotion, behavior'. Teaching 'Consciousness on Nature' is not recommended at elementary or middle school level because it demands higher inference. On the contrary, considering the reality in high school it is not recommended to teach the necessity and method of recycling or to go field trip to the polluted area. Rather, it is better to inform the students of Environmental Ethics' viewpoints and let them know the ways of moral judgments. The view of nature in Orientalism is well explained through the Environmental Ethics' viewpoint. To explain the view of nature in Orientalism we should concentrate on the theory, not on the attitude of life. And we should rather compare the viewpoints of nature in Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism respectively than explain in Orientalism all together. That is, if we compare with the viewpoints of Environmental Ethics and explain similarities & differences in Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, we can complement Environmental Ethics or present the third approach.

  • High temperature thermal behaviors of EAF dust by coke at initial reaction stage were studied to obtain the fundamental data of EAF dust treatment process, that is Extended Arc Plasma Furnace System called RAPID system. In this study thermal behaviors including calcination of limestone, devolatilization of EAF dust itself, and reduction & devolatilization of mixture(EAF dust : coke : limestone = 80 : 10 : 10 wt.%) were investigated as functions of reaction temperature (1000~1300$^{\circ}C$) and reaction time (3~12 min), considering the 180% equivalence of carbon reduction and 1.7 bacisity for optimum reduction and melting of EAF dust in the RAPID system. Size of sample was about below 0.1 mm for these experiments. Limestone was completely calcined at above 1100$^{\circ}C$ within 1 minutes. In the case of devolatilization of EAF dust itself, weight loss of EAF dust was about 14% at 1300$^{\circ}C$ and 12 minutes, and partial sintering and melting were found in part of sample. Weight loss of mixtures increased with increasing reaction temperature and time, about 46% weight loss in it was occurred at 1300$^{\circ}C$ and 12 minutes. From these weight losses showing devolatilization and reduction of EAF dust, the treatment time of EAF dust inside.

  • Basic studies have been conducted regarding the crystal formation of hydroxyapatite which was produced in the treatment process of phosphate-containing wastewater using calcium ions as the precipitating agent for its employment as the material for artificial bones. The precipitation of hydroxyapatite were conducted in the synthetic solution which simulating human body fluid for its increased applicability. Ca($NO_3$)$_2$$.$$4H_2$O and ($NH_4$)$_2$$HPO_4$ were employed for the precipitation of hydroxyapatite and its composition was analyzed after drying at 80oC. The thermal behavior of precipitate was investigated by examining the change in its crystalline structure according to the sintering temperature. DTA/TG analysis showed that the escape of moisture from the precipitate occurred at ca. $100^{\circ}C$ and the decomposition of ammonia and the evaporation of lattice water were brought about at around $250^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the thermally treated precipitate consisted mainly of hydroxyapatite. For dried precipitate, the bonds in the component materials which used for the precipitate formation were observed by FT-IR, and after thermal treatment the major bonds in the precipitate were shown to be $OH^{-}$, $PO_4^{3-}$ , and $CO_3^{ 2-}$ , which were main comprising bonds of hydroxyapatite.

  • To obtain the fundamental information on the dissolution of nickel into the slag in the pyrometallurgical processes for treatment of wasted PCB, the distribution ratios of nickel between CaO-$SiO_2-Al_2O_3$-MgO slag and copper-5 wt%Ni alloy were measured at 1623 K to 1823 K under a controlled $CO_2$-CO atmosphere. The distribution ratio of Ni increased linearly with increasing oxygen partial pressure. Therefore, the dissolution reaction of nickel into the slags could be described by the following equation; $$Ni(l)_{metal}+\frac{1}{2}O_2(g)NiO(l)_{slag}$$ The distribution ratio of Ni increased linearly with increasing content of basic oxides(CaO and MgO) in slag. However, the distribution ratio of Ni decreased linearly with increasing temperature. From these results, the empirical equation of distribution ratio of Ni was obtained by the following equation from the analysis of experimental conditions by multiple regression. $${\log}L_{Ni}=0.4000{\log}P_{O2}-5.1{\times}10^{-4}T+0.3375\(\frac{X_{CaO}+X_{MgO}}{X_{SiO2}}\)$$

  • Torrefaction is a thermochemical process proceeded at the temperature around $250^{\circ}C$ in an inert gas condition. By torrefaction, the hemicellulose portions contained in biomass are broken down to change into the volatile gas which is removed from biomass eventually. The main purpose of biomass torrefaction is to improve the energy density of the biomass to minimize the transport energy consumption, though the flammability can be elevated for transportation. In this study two types of solid biomass fuel, waste wood and rice straw, were torrefied at various temperature range from $200^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the torrefied biomass characteristics. In addition torrefied biomass were tested to evaluate the combustion characteristics using TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis). After the torrefaction of biomass, the C/H (carbon to hydrogen ratio) and C/O (carbon to oxygen ratio) were measured for aquisition of bio-stability as well as combustion pattern. Generally C/H ratio implies the soot formation during combustion, and the C/O ratio for bio-stability. By torrefaction temperature at $300^{\circ}C$, C/H ratio and C/O ratio were increased by two times for C/H and three times for C/O. The torrefied biomass showed similar TGA pattern to coal compared to pure biomass; that is, less mass decrease at lower temperature range for torrefied biomass than the pure biomass.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the expandibility of sludge treatment by earthworm through real scale experiment and the optimum counter-plan for organic sludge treatment. For the purposes, sludge removal efficienciesof night-soil using earthworm and it's behavior according to the transplanting methods of the earthworm on non-cover worm bed or in the green house worm bed were compared. Sludge uptake rates on non-cover worm bed for 6 months were $0.27{\sim}0.33ton/m^2$ and the excrement of earthworm yields $0.15ton/m^2$(44.1~46.7% of raw night soil sludge dosage). These results were not much different from the worm bed in the green house. The average and maximum earthworm density were about $6.5kg/m^2$ and $7kg/m^2$ respectively on the non-cover worm bed. The density of the worm bed was comparatively higher in spring and fall terms but lower in summer. The amount of old earthworm was much plenty than young earthworm on the non-cover worm bed, resulting in reverse distribution type of pyramid. From the experiments on non-cover worm bed(7,000 pyeong)and in the green house worm bed(1,200 pyeong), it was concluded that landfill and transporting cost could be reduced when the earthworm was applied for the night-soil sludge treatment. Profits from the excrement sale of earthworm was 9,600,000 won. Through this study, it was founded that earthworm treatment method for organic sludge are much more environmentally sound than landfill treatment.

  • It is very urgent to research the proper recycling method of marine dredged soil as construction material for environmental conservation. Couple of developed countries have been lots of related researches on recycling of marine dredged soil for marine environmental conservation. This is highly imperative in our country. A small-scaled model test for underground pipe has been conducted on the use of controlled low strength materials with marine dredged soil. The flexible pipe, which is called PVC, was used. Four different testing materials, such as natural sand, insitu-soil, sand-CLSM with marine dredged soil and insitu-soil CLSM with marine dredged soil, were used. The vertical and lateral displacement of pipe with CLSM is one tenth of common granular materials. Also, the use of CSLM showed lower lateral and vertical pressure than that of common granular materials. The main reason is the effect of cement hardening of CLSM. This could increase of the stiffness of pipe with backfill materials. In this study, the data presented show that marine dredged soil and in-situ soil can be successfully used in CLSM and reduce the deformation and earth pressure on flexible pipe.
