  • Natural aggregate regular exploitation has led to environmental and resource depletion issues; consequently, construction waste has become an important raw material in the supply of aggregate smoothly. The recycled aggregate produced in the most of recycled aggregate processing company in Korea has a high adhesion ratio of cement paste and mortar, which affects the water absorption ratio and density. Therefore, the quality of recycled aggregate needs to be improved. In this study, we improved the quality of recycled aggregate through the use of a multistage separation ball mill. This ball mill has a sieve which protects the ball mix and improves the motion. Products produced by using multistage separation ball mill were compared with various quality standard for utilization as recycle aggregate. Finally, we confirmed that the multistage separation ball mill can efficiently separate cement paste and mortar from natural aggregate and that it is suitable for the production of recycled aggregates.

  • Utilization of demolished-concrete as recycled aggregate has been researched for the purpose of substituing for insufficient natural aggregate, saving resources and protecting environment. There, however, are some problems that qualities of recycled aggregates are not only largely diverse, but also mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete decrease a little in comparison with those of natural aggregate concrete. In this study, the resistance to freezing and thawing of recycled aggregate concrete was highly different due to adhered mortar on recycled aggregate, and durability factor of concrete with NA SRA and DRA was decreased more than that of control concrete. However, durability factor of concrete with AA SRA was larger than that of control concrete.

  • It is now established that more than two types of blended aggregate have beneficial effects on quality and supply of concrete in the long run. However, studies on blended aggregate have not widely been progressive and the evaluation method of its most favorable mixture proportion is still needed. Therefore this study investigated the most favorable mixture proportion through the physical experiment of fresh and hardened state's cement mortar, in response to three types of composite ratio, natural fine aggregate(Ns), crushed fine aggregate(Cs) and recycled fine aggregate(Rs). Test showed that increase of blending ratio of Ns and Cs improved fluidity of mot1ar. For the properties of compressive and flexural strength, mortar blending Ns and Cs properly, exhibited similar value to one using only Cs, while mortar mixing Rs showed lower strength value as less as 6% of control one. Mortar using only Rs exhibited the largest drying shrinkage value. In addition, even thought it is not a clear quantitative analysis, technical-imaging-skill presenting the most favorable mixture proportion 3-dimensionally is proposed in this research, in order to notify the proportion easily.

  • The batch and column experiments were performed to overcome the limitation of the neutralization process using the $scCO_2$-water-recycled aggregate, reducing its treatment time to 3 hour. The waste cement mortar and two kinds of recycled aggregate were used for the experiment. In the extraction batch experiment, three different types of waste mortar were reacted with water and $scCO_2$ for 1 ~ 24 hour and the pH of extracted solution from the treated waste mortar was measured to determine the minimum reaction time maintaining below 9.8 of pH. The continuous column experiment was also performed to identify the pH reduction effect of the neutralization process for the massive recycled aggregate, considering the non-equilibrium reaction in the field. Thirty five gram of waste mortar was mixed with 70 mL of distilled water in a high pressurized stainless steel cell at 100 bar and $50^{\circ}C$ for 1 ~ 24 hour as the neutralization process. The dried waste mortar was mixed with water at 150 rpm for 10 min. and the pH of water was measured for 15 days. The XRD and TG/DTA analyses for the waste mortar before and after the reaction were performed to identify the mineralogical change during the neutralization process. The acryl column (16 cm in diameter, 1 m in length) was packed with 3 hour treated (or untreated) recycled aggregate and 220 liter of distilled water was flushed down into the column. The pH and $Ca^{2+}$ concentration of the effluent from the column were measured at the certain time interval. The pH of extracted water from 3 hour treated waste mortar (10 ~ 13 mm in diameter) maintained below 9.8 (the legal limit). From XRD and TG/DTA analyses, the amount of portlandite in the waste mortar decreased after the neutralization process but the calcite was created as the secondary mineral. From the column experiment, the pH of the effluent from the column packed with 3 hour treated recycled aggregate kept below 9.8 regardless of their sizes, identifying that the recycled aggregate with 3 hour $scCO_2$ treatment can be reused in real construction sites.

  • This study has analyzed the engineering characteristics of resource-cycling mortar according to the variation of fine aggregate type using illite with high development potentials by setting the goal as developing eco-friendly construction materials. As a result, while flow has increased if recycled fine aggregate and waste refractory are used separately or mixing them adequately in case of flow and compressive strength, the flow had somewhat declined followed by illite replacement. However, the possibility of such usage is determined to be adequate if used by mixing illite, recycled fine aggregate and waste refractory properly due to the dry shrinkage effect.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data on the optimum method for interfacial separation for an effective recycle of concrete waste by using the thermal properties of concrete. Therefore, this study is proceeded by dividing the interface of concrete into cement paste and fine aggregates or mortar and coarse aggregate, considering the aspect of recycled cement and aggregate as the recycling use of concrete waste. As results of the experiment, in case of recycle cement, the interfacial separation is easily appeared, but it is shown that the mixed amount of powder included in fine aggregate doesn't greatly decrease. But, in case of recycle coarse aggregate, the effect of interfacial separation by preliminary heating is predominant. Especially, the bonding rate of mortar is the lowest when it is heated 5 times for 120 minutes at $300^{\circ}C$. Hence, it is considered that it will be an excellent effect of quality control when the results of this study is applied to a manufacturing system of recycle coarse aggregate which is about to put into practical use.

  • The research conducted to study the potential practicability of recycled aggregate concrete by analyzing the characteristics of concretes made of recycled quality aggregates produced by wet and dry process has found the following results. The air content of recycled aggregate concrete increased with increase of the substitut on rate due to mortar included while producing recycled aggregates. However, the concretes with aggregate produced by dry process had relatively low rate of increase in air content. The slump showed generally decreasing trend as the substitution rate of recycled aggregate increased regardless of the wet or dry process. It was assumed that the mortar particles remained in recycled aggregate absorbed the surplus hydration in concrete and decreased fluidity The compressive strength generally decreased as the substitution rate of recycled aggregate increased, however there was an increasing trend as well due to decreasing effect of water-cement ratio when the substitution rate of recycled aggregate reached 25, 50% after mix. This phenomena also appeared in early age, which meant that recycled aggregate concrete should not be retarded in setting when applied in the field. The tensile strength also reached the maximum when wet or dry recycled aggregate replaced with 25%. To conclude, recycled aggregates for concrete produced by wet or dry process are expected to demonstrate essential characteristics of concrete without significant decline in physical or dynamic quality when the substitution rate is below 25% although there are variations subject to water-cement ratio. However, slight differences are expected due to types of recycled aggregate and physical quality.

  • This study was conducted to confirm the applicability of recycled aggregates as aggregates for structural concrete as a way to respond to the shortage of natural aggregates. The two-stage mixing approach developed by Tam et al. is known to be a method that can improve the mechanical performance of recycled aggregate concrete without the installation of new additional facilities. In this work, modified version of two stage mixing approach, which was used in our earlier work, was introduced to prepare mortar specimens with recycled fine aggregate, and the compressive strength and fire resistance were compared to mortar mixed with normal mixing approach. According to the experimental results from mortar with recycled fine aggregate, the use of two-stage mixing approach was found to be more effective than normal mixing approach for compressive strength development. In addition, the residual strengths of the mortar with two-stage mixing approach was higher than mortar made of normal mixing approach after exposure to 600 and 900 ℃. It is possible to manufacture high-performance cement composites with recycled fine aggregates through the active use of the two-stage mixing approach.

  • The reuse of waste concrete amy settle the problems of environmental pollution and critical shortage of good natural aggregate. But recycled aggregate particles consist of substantial amount of relatively soft cement paste component. These aggregates are more porous, and les resistant to mechanical actions than natural aggregate. And the source of supply for manufacturing recycled aggregate is generally composed of different types of original aggregate and strengths of original mortar. The properties of recycled aggregate exhibit a considerable variation due to the properties of original concrete. This paper is an experimental study on the fundamental properties of recycled aggregates sampled from processing plant in the suburbs of TaeJeon.

  • This paper presents an experimental study conducted to investigate the effect of recycled fine aggregate (RFA) on the mechanical properties and chloride diffusion behavior of mortar. The test results revealed that the addition of RFA plays an important role in the mechanical properties and pore structures of the investigated mortar specimens as well as chloride diffusion behavior. The mechanical properties such as compressive strength and flexural strength of recycled fine aggregate mortar (RFAM) were gradually decreased as RFA replacement ratio increase. The pore structure of RFAM was examined by permeability tests. The RFAM showed a increment in the permeability according to replacement ratio increase of RFA. But the chloride diffusion coefficient of RFAM was almost same up to 50% replacement ratio of RFA due to a chloride binding phenomenon of RFAM which may compensate the higher permeability of RFAM.
