  • As the waste concrete is increased by demolition according to the plan of city-reconstruction and preperation of city-environment etc, the production of waste concrete in the country is being very increased every years. Because the use of recycled aggregate is low, the cases of unlawful reclamation and disuse are increased. These occur the social and economic problems. This experimental study is to investigate the fluidity, compressive strength and durability of flowing recycled aggregate concrete using the river sand and recycled coarse aggregate according to the replacement rate of fly-ash and to present the fundamental data for the using of flowing recycled aggregate concrete.

  • In this study, a sample was fabricated according to the recycled aggregate replacement level(0%, 30%, 60%), and the steel fiber mixing status in order to use recycled aggregate as a concrete alternative coarse aggregate, and then the materials and structural characteristics of recycled aggregate and steel fiber which impacted the reinforced concrete were analyzed. A conclusion was derived as follows. After considering the results of various material experiments and mock-up test, when a flexural strength and a ductility factor is increased and the replacement level is increased through mixing the steel fiber with the recycled aggregate concrete, the ductility and flexural strength reduction seems to be inhibited by adding the steel fiber. Also, it is indicated that the recycled aggregate has almost-similar compressive strength, tensile strength flexural strength and ductility capacity to the concrete which using the general gone even though the steel fiber is used and the replacement level is increased to 30%. Accordingly, the reinforced concrete frame using the steel fiber mixture and recycled aggregate seems to apply to the actual structure.

  • In this study, various tests are performed for the durability of the concrete using domestic recycled coarse aggregate including drying shrinkage, permeability, freezing-thawing resistance and $CO_2$ diffusivity. Tests of freezing-thawing resistance, chloride ion permeability and $CO_2$ diffusivity of recycled concrete show favorable results. But, the maximum drying shrinkage ratio to normal concrete is increased 24% with increasing substitution ratio of recycled aggregate. Therefore, for the use of recycled concrete in structures, the preventive measures of drying shrinkage is necessary in mix design and the adequate substitution ratio of recycled aggregate should be proposed.

  • PURPOSES : This study was performed to investigate a feasibility of job-site use of recycled concrete aggregate exceeding 3% of absorption rate. Test variables are coarse aggregate types such as natural aggregate, job-site processed recycled aggregate, and recycled aggregate processed from the intermediate waste treatment company. METHODS : First, aggregate properties such as gradation, specific gravity and absorption rate were determined. Next a basic series of mechanical properties of concrete was tested. RESULTS : All strength test results such as compression, flexure and modulus were satisfied for the minimum requirements. Finally up to first 48 elapsed days the shrinkage strains of concretes made from both recycled aggregates (in case of volume-surface ratio of 300) appeared to be greater than 26% of the companion concretes made from natural aggregates. CONCLUSIONS : Drying shrinkage result is ascribed to greater absorption rate and specific gravity of those specimens made from recycled aggregate. This may be reduced with an addition of admixtures.

  • As the ministry of construction and transportation established quality standards for recycled aggregate in August, 2005, the consumption of recycled aggregates is expected to be increased in construction fields in the future. Thus the relations between compressive strength of general concretes and that of recycled aggregate concretes which are applied to actual structures are attempted to investigate through non-destruction testing method. Presently Schmitt-Hammer test method is that concrete compressive strength is predicted by measuring surface hardness of concretes, and is well known as the most convenient and simply operated method among many non-destruction testing methods. In this study, cylinder specimen and mock-up were constructed using recycled aggregate concretes made by the first class recycled coarse aggregates and recycled fine aggregates specified in KS F 2573 (recycled aggregate for concrete), and compressive strength of hardened concrete of middle ages was evaluated.

  • Large-scaling recycling of demolished concrete will concrete will contribute not only to the solution of a growing waste disposal problem, it will also help to consweve natural resoures of sand and gravel and to secure future supply of reasonly priced aggregates for building and other construction purposes within large urban areas. Because recycled aggregate particles consits of substantial amount of relatively soft cement paste component, it is less resistant to mechanical actions. With this view in mind, to obtain a reference data for the development of recycling system and to a basic data the guiedline of recycled aggregate concrete construction and engineering properties of recycled aggregate concrete according to the factors, such as blending ratio of recyced aggregete with the natural aggregate, addition to the factors, such as blending ratio of recycled aggregete with the natural aggregate, addition of flyash, water coment ratio.

  • This paper discusses the suitability of producing concrete with 100 % recycled aggregate to meet durability and strength requirements for different applications. Aggregate strength, gradation, absorption, specific gravity, shape and texture are some of the physical and mechanical characteristics that contribute to the strength and durability of concrete. In general, the quality of recycled aggregate depends on the loading and exposure conditions of the demolished structures. Therefore, the experimental program was focused on the evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of the recycled aggregate over a period of 6 months. In addition, concrete properties produced with fine and coarse recycled aggregate were evaluated. Several concrete mixes were prepared with 100 % recycled aggregates and the results were compared to that of a control mix. SEM was conducted to examine the microstructure of selected mixes. The results showed that concrete with acceptable strength and durability could be produced if high packing density is achieved.

  • Recycled aggregate is a valuable resource in Korea in lack of natural aggregate. Government recognizes the importance and suggests various policies enhancing its use for higher value-added application. Most of recycled aggregate produced currently in Korea, however, is applied for low value-added uses such as embankment, reclamation, etc. Its higher valued application such as for structural concrete is very limited. Although domestic manufacturing technology of recycled aggregate is at the world level, recycled aggregate is not applied for structural concrete. Primary reasons for the limited use of the recycled aggregate include bonded mortar and cracks occurred during crushing and hence it is very difficult to predict and control the quality of recycled aggregate concrete. This research intended to grasp combined characteristics of recycled aggregate, high early strength cement, maximum temperature and time duration of steam curing and then, analyze the effects of factors. Also, it suggested the method to improve field applicability of recycled aggregate concrete.

  • This study is performed to examine the physical and mechanical properties of the high strength concrete using recycled aggregate. The recycled aggregate is replaced by 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% of natural crushed aggregate. The compressive strength of the concrete used recycled aggregate is shown in more than $400kgf/cm^2$ at the curing age 28 days. But the pulse velocity and dynamic modulus of elasticity are decreased with increasing the content of recycled aggregate. Accordingly, these recycled aggregate concrete can be used for high strength concrete.

  • The characteristics of concrete strength and fracture parameters of recycled aggregate concrete were investigated to apply to the concrete pavements. As the results, the early strength of recycled aggregate concrete showed to be lower than that of natural coarse aggregate concrete, whereas strength at 28 days showed to be similar. Young's modulus of recycled aggregate concrete was lower than that of natural coarse aggregate concrete due to the difference of aggregate strength. And recycled aggregate concrete contained with ground granulated blast furnace slag seemed to have an effect of strength increasing. The critical stress intensity factor of recycled aggregate concrete at the early age was increased, and converged to be similar, compared to natural aggregate concrete at later age. The reliability of two-parameter fracture model was identified by the good correlation between the theoretical value computed by P-CMOD relationship and experimental results for Young's modulus and tensile strength.
