As a basic study to recover the copper from the copper converter slag, the characterisitcs of converter slag was studied. The results obtained in this work are as follows. 1. The copper converter slag is composed of Cu, $Cu_2$S, $Fe_3$$O_4$, Fayalite and silicate. 2. It is supposed that magnetite in converter slag is oxidized to hematite at $720^{\circ}C$ and this phase is soluted to fayalite. 3. As the converter slag is added in the water solution, pH increased and the heavy metal ions in the water are adsorbed on the slag. 4. Work index of the converter slag cooled for the 10 hour and the 2 hour are 25~27 kWh/ton and 35 kWh/ton, respectively. 5. In the case of grinding test of converter slag, fayalite in converter slag is easily grinded than magnetite in converter slag.

Determination of trace elements in a sample including complicated matrix is very difficult due to the interference by the matrix. Therefore, if the trace elements can be separated from the complex sample matrix and determined, the interference effects can be reduced, and it is very helpful for the overall analysis. In this study, the analytes of trace elements were separated from the sample matrix by co-precipitation with trace elements using indium hydroxide ($In(OH)_3$), then detected by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES). Above all, the optimal conditions for the co-precipitation of elements with indium hydroxide were experimentally established. At last, salt was analyzed by the developed analytical method. No heavy metals were not found in Shinan Jeungdo salt, but trace amounts of several heavy metals except for cadmium were found in Cheonnam Yongkwang salt.
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to estimate the measurement uncertainty associated with determination of cadmium and lead from tomato paste by ICP/MS. The sources of measurement uncertainty (i.e. sample weight, final volume, standard weight, purity, molecular weight, working standard solution, calibration curve, recovery and repeatability) in associated with the analysis of cadmium and lead were evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS: The guide to the expression of uncertainty was used for the GUM (Guide to the expression of Uncertainty in Measurement) and Draft EURACHEM/CITAC (EURACHEM: A network of organization for analytical chemistry in Europe/Co-Operation on International Traceability in Analytical Chemistry) Guide with mathematical calculation and statistical analysis. The uncertainty components were evaluated by either Type A or Type B methods and the combined standard uncertainty were calculated by statistical analysis using several factors. Expected uncertainty of cadmium and lead was $0.106{\pm}0.015$ mg/kg (k=2.09) and $0.302{\pm}0.029$ mg/kg (k=2.16), on basis of 95% confidence of Certified Reference Material (CRM) which was within certification range of $0.112{\pm}0.007$ mg/kg for cadmium (k=2.03) and $0.316{\pm}0.021$ mg/kg for lead (k=2.01), respectively. CONCLUSION(s): The most influential components in the uncertainty of heavy metals analysis were confirmed as recovery, standard calibration curve and standard solution were identified as the most influential components causing uncertainty of heavy metal analysis. Therefore, more careful consideration is required in these steps to reduce uncertainty of heavy metals analysis in tomato paste.
In this study, scarp of PCB containing copper and precious metals was manufactured as an anode, and electrorefining experiments were conducted on change of $H_2SO_4$ concentration and current density. Through electrolytic refining experiments, the concentration of Cu and slime recovered from each electrode was analyzed, element behavior was confirmed, and current efficiency was also calculated. As the $H_2SO_4$ concentration was increased, the current efficiency and the purity of Cu decreased, but the precious metals in the anode slime were maximally concentrated with 2.0 M $H_2SO_4$. In addition, as the current density was increased, the current efficiency decreased and the purity of Cu showed a tendency to increase, and the precious metals in the anode slime were maximally concentrated with $300A/m^2$. As a result of the pilot scale experiments, the Au content was 8,705 mg/kg, the Ag content was 35,092 mg/kg in the anode slime. As compared with the initial content, Au was concentrated 16 times and Ag concentrated 14 times.

A high-throughput electrorefiner has been developed for commercialization use by enhancing the uranium recovery from the reduced metal which is produced from the oxide reduction process. It is necessary to scrap and effectively collect uranium dendrites from the surface of the solid cathode for high yield. When a steel electrode is used as the cathode in the electrorefining process, uranium is deposited and regularly stuck to the steel cathode during electrorefining. The sticking coefficient of a steel cathode is very high. In order to decrease the sticking coefficient of the steel cathode effectively, vibration mode was applied to the electrode in this study. Uranium dendrites were scraped and fell apart from the steel cathode by a vibration force. The vibrational scraping of the steel cathode was compared to the self-scraping of the graphite cathode. Effects of the applied current density and the vibration stroke on the scraping of the uranium dendrites were also investigated.
Chemical heat pump system of 2-propanol/acetone/hydrogen is most suitable to the recovery of waste heat of power plant. various types of 5 wt% Pt-alumina catalysts were prepared for 2-propanol dehydrogenation using sol-gel method. The characteristics and the dehydrogenation reaction rate of each catalyst were investigated. Pt-alumina xerogel catalyst has excellent reaction rate and good durability in comparison with the existing alumina supported Pt catalysts. Pt-alumina aerogel catalyst had the highest reaction rate in all prepared catalysts, but sufficient aging time was necessary to maintain its reaction rate. A potential advantage of the aerogel catalyst is the fact that the high temperature heat treatment is not required. Without heat treatment or with low temperature heat treatment, the Pt-alumina aerogel catalyst has excellent reaction rate as well as durability and this gives us the economic advantage. Alumina xerogel supported Pt catalyst prepared by incipient wetness method showed good reaction rate, and had good mechanical strength. Blank alumina xerogel prepared by sol-gel method can be used for the support of metal catalysts.
Selective catalytic reduction(SCR) catalysts are obtained from de-NOx system of thermoelectric power plant. A process was developed for valuable metals such as vanadium and tungsten recovery from spent SCR catalyst by using soda roasting followed by water leaching. Spent SCR catalyst having $V_2O_5$(1.23 mass %) and $WO_3$(7.73 mass %). For getting soluble metal forms of the targeted metals like vanadium and tungsten soda roasting process was implemented. In soda roasting process, sodium carbonate added 5 equivalent ratio at roasted temperature $850^{\circ}C$ with 120 min roasted time for $544{\mu}m$ particle size of spent SCR catalyst. After soda roasting process moved to water leaching for roasted spent catalyst. Before leaching process the roasted spent catalyst was grinded up to $-45{\mu}m$ size. The leaching time is 30 min at $40^{\circ}C$ temperature, 10 % pulp density. The final leaching efficiency obtained 46 % of vanadium and 92 % of tungsten from present process.
Red mud generated in the alumina manufacturing process contains various valuable resources, but it is not comprehensively recycled yet causing severe environmental problems. In Korea, red mud is producing about 200,000 tons annually and most of them are landfilled or disposed. Red mud's recycling technology is also being developed in many countries, but red mud's recycling technologies are still lacking compared to the production rate. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics and the amount of red mud, and the current status and technology development trend. Red mud has shown that recycling studies are being carried out in fields such as construction, recycling, metal recovery, adsorbent, and pollution stabilization. In particular, technologies for recovering rare earths have been developed as worldwide because of their high economic value. The data analyzed in this study will be used as basic data for the further development of technologies in the future.

In this study, the optimal nitration process for selective lithium leaching from powder of a spent battery cell (LiNixCoyMnzO2, LiCoO2) was studied using Taguchi method. The nitration process is a method of selective lithium leaching that involves converting non-lithium nitric compounds into oxides via nitric acid leaching and roasting. The influence of pretreatment temperature, nitric acid concentration, amount of nitric acid, and roasting temperature were evaluated. The signal-to-noise ratio and analysis of variance of the results were determined using L16(44) orthogonal arrays. The findings indicated that the roasting temperature followed by the nitric acid concentration, pretreatment temperature, and amount of nitric acid used had the greatest impact on the lithium leaching ratio. Following detailed experiments, the optimal conditions were found to be 10 h of pretreatment at 700℃ with 2 ml/g of 10 M nitric acid leaching followed by 10 h of roasting at 275℃. Under these conditions, the overall recovery of lithium exceeded 80%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the leaching residue in deionized water after roasting of lithium nitrate and other nitrate compounds was performed. This was done to determine the cause of rapid decrease in lithium leaching rate above a roasting temperature of 400℃. The results confirmed that lithium manganese oxide was formed from lithium nitrate and manganese nitrate at these temperatures, and that it did not leach in deionized water. XRD analysis was also used to confirm the recovery of pure LiNO3 from the solution that was leached during the nitration process. This was carried out by evaporating and concentrating the leached solution through solid-liquid separation.

The fine particulate structure of biochar limits its use as a heavy metal adsorbent, and makes separation of the biochar from the solution technically challenging, thereby reducing recovery of the heavy metals. To address this issue, this study prepared biochar beads under various mixing conditions and investigated their efficiency in removing Pb from aqueous solutions using adsorption models. The biochar beads were produced by mixing alginate and biochar at different ratios: alginate bead (AB), 1% biochar + bead (1-BB), 2.5% biochar + bead (2.5-BB), and 5% biochar + bead (5-BB). The results revealed that the Freundlich isothermal adsorption pattern of the biochar beads to Pb was of the L-type. The highest Langmuir isothermal adsorption capacity (28.736 mg/g) was observed in the 2.5-BB treatment. The dominant mechanism among the kinetic adsorption characteristics of biochar beads for Pb was chemical adsorption. Additionally, the optimal pH range for Pb adsorption was found to be between 4 and 5.5. The highest Pb removal efficiency (97.9%) was achieved when 26.6 g/L of biochar beads were used. These findings suggest that biochar beads are an economical and highly efficient adsorbent that enables separation and recovery of fine biochar particles.
