  • Background: Under-ascertainment and over-ascertainment are common phenomena in surveillance and registry systems of health-related events. Capture-recapture is one of the methods which is applied to determine the sensitivity of surveillance or registry systems to recognize cancer cases. This study aimed to estimate the number of cancers using data available both in the Cancer Registry Center of Northwestern Iran and in the Population-based Cancer Registry Center of Iran. Material and Methods: The studied population consisted of all cancerous cases in the northwest of Iran from 2008 to 2010. All data were extracted from two resources and entered into Microsoft Excel software. After removing common and repeat cases the data were statistically analyzed using a capture-recapture studies' specific software "CARE 1.4". Estimations were calculated by Chapman and Petersen methods with the approximate confidence interval of 95%. Results: From 2008 to 2010, the number of all cancer cases was estimated to be 21,652 (CI 95%: 19,863-22,101). Sensitivity rate of all cancer cases was 83.9% and that of Population-based Cancer Registry Center of Iran was 52%. It was 93.1% considering both resources. Conclusion: Using two resources and the capture-recapture method rather than a single resource may be a more reliable method to estimate the number of cancer cases.

  • Mark-Recapture method for open population commonly use Jolly-Seber method. This method assumes that all animals are equally likely to be caught in each sample (the equal catchability). This objects are making introduction of Mark-Recapture method for open population and using the robust design that combine a open population method with close population method to solve upper problems. Then population growth rate estimators that are derived Pollock's Jolly-Seber parameters and Kendall's Jolly-Seber parameters are estimated.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this paper is to estimate the completeness of the Korean Medical Insurance Data in childhood asthma. Methods : Capture-recapture method was used to estimate the prevalence of childhood asthma and case ascertainment rate(completeness) of Korean Medical Insurance Data using two source model, 'Korean Medical Insurance Committee Data (KMICD)' and 'Nationwide Study of Asthma and Allergies in Korean Children'. The asthma cases were restricted to those who were born from 1981 to 1989 and were identified by their Resident Register Number. Asthma cases in Korean Medical Insurance Data were defined as cases coded by ICD-9 493 and ICD-10 J45. In 'Nationwide Study of Asthma and Allergies in Korean Children', asthma cases were defined as the children who had been diagnosed asthma and had experienced symptoms of asthma during the past 12 months. The defined cases in two data sources were matched by 13 digits Resident Register Number. The numbers of matched patients in two data sources were 245 of 32,825 eligible total subjects. Chapman and Wittes' nearly unbiased estimation was used for capture-recapture analysis of two data sources. Results : Observed prevalence rate of childhood asthma was 5.3% and estimated prevalence rate by capture-recapture analysis was 11.6%. The highest prevalence rate was observed in 6-7 age group and the older the rate decreased. The completeness (the proportion of cases ascertained by KMICD to the total observed cases by two data sources) was 20.6%, and ranged form 10.8% to 28.8% by area. Conclusions : Invalid diagnosis of cases might overestimate the prevalence of child-hood asthma and might underestimate the completeness of Korean Medical Insurance Committee Data in this study.

  • The present study is aimed at evaluating the economic effectiveness of Abalone, haliotis discus hanai Releasing Project(ARP) conducted in the fishing ground owned by a fishing village in Ulsan, Korea. The results were summarized as follows: First, an average ratio of released abalones in the total landing after releasing is shown to be 85.0%. Second, the recapture rate of released abalones is 46.8%, exceeding the recapture rate of BEP(Break-Even-Point), 22.9%. Third, it is evaluated that total economic effectiveness of the ARP is 6.7-6.8 times, net effectiveness is 2.2-2.3 times, and the NPV(Net Present Value) discounted by a 8% interest rate is 474, 635 thousand wons, indicating the project is profitable. Considerable parts of the positive results on the ARP are based on some beneficial conditions, including the selection of favorable releasing sites, best self-regulation system of a fishing village for preservation of seaweed facilities and continued activities for protecting small abalones and their rearing. These results imply that the success of the ARP would be primarily dependent upon the selection of releasing site and effective management system after releasing.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the economic effect of the release of seed flounder to the central area of the West Sea, which was analyzed into both direct and indirect effects. The results showed that based on the data collected from partial area, the economic effect of flounder seed release reached 6.97 times, average catch proportion was 32.27$\%$, and recapture rate was 11.26$\%$, suggesting that economic effect was very high. In addition, it was observed that the recapture rate was greatly higher than 2.05$\%$, that of Break-Even-Point. It was noted that the increased catch by the release of seed flounder resulted in the increase in commission of sales and the increase in sports fishing. Another economic effect observed were diverse including the increase in income of fishing village, elevated spirit to proper management of fisheries resources, maintaining of willingness to live in fishing village through activation of local fishing village, prevention of illegal fishing including capture of juvenile fish, and the increase in the supply of sea food of high quality. It is emphasized that although the investigation was conducted in the same area, the results will vary by size at release, time at release and other factors. Finally, there is a need to expand species and area of study for more active economic analysis incorporating natural sciences.

  • Introduction: Capture-recapture methods have been suggested for reducing costs of disease registration as well as reducing bias in incidence estimations. This study aimed to estimate the gastric cancer incidence in the Tehran metropolis population during 2002-2006. Materials and Methods: We investigated new cases of gastric cancer reported by three sources; death certificates, pathology reports, and medical records to Tehran population-based cancer registry during 2002-2006. $G^2$ statistics and the two-source capture-recapture method were used to select the best-fitted log-linear model and to estimate incidence, respectively. EXCEL software version 2007 and SPSS software version 16 were used for this research. Results: The number of reported cases was 4,463, with an average age of 68.5 (${\pm}12.9$) years. We found the model that combined two sources of data including pathology reports and medical records and furthermore complemented by death certificates as the best model. The reported and the estimated incidences were 11.0 and 27.1 per 100,000 respectively. Conclusions: The incidence estimated by two-source capture-recapture method is about three times higher than the incidence reported by the sources under investigation. It is recommended to move towards the implementation of population-based cancer registration using various sources of data collection to achieve more accurate data.

  • This study is aimed to analyze economic effectiveness of the sea cucumber seed releasing program in Gyeongsangbuk-do region. Based on the surveyed data, the production value of released sea cucumber and the seed releasing program cost are estimated and compared to determine the economic validity of the sea cucumber seed releasing program. Results show that the B/C ratio, as an indicator of economic evaluation, is 2.0, indicating that the sea cucumber seed releasing program in Gyeongsangbuk-do region would be economically feasible under the current production and market conditions. Sensitivity analyses of main variables indicate that the economic effectiveness can be increased when the recapture rate would be increased and the seed price of sea cucumber would be decreased.

  • We evaluated the utility of applying isozyme analysis and two tagging methods, visible implant fluorescent elastomer (VIE) injection and uropod-cutting, to monitor the effects of releasing nursery-reared fleshy prawn (Fenneropenaeus chinensis) into natural habitat in Korea. One hundred thousand farmed prawns (70 mm long) were tagged by clipping off the outer left uropod and injecting them with VIE. This marked seed population was released at Muchangpo, Korea, on 11 and 19 July 2002. Two months later, total catch and catch per unit effort (CPUE) at three locations (Hongwon, Muchangpo, and Anmyundo) were determined. Total catch and CPUE increased nearly 18% over the previous year in Hongwon and Muchangpo. The mixing rate, estimated by uropod regeneration pattern, was 0.33% at Hongwon, 0.53% at Muchangpo, and 0.21% at Anmyundo. The recapture rate was about 3.5%. Isozyme analysis confirmed that the mixing rate was highest at Muchangpo. Moreover, fleshy prawns from Muchangpo were genetically most related to the seed population, indicating that the released prawns had largely remained near the released site. We also confirmed that isozyme genes are valuable as genetic markers for qualitative analyses of a released seed population.

  • Settlement of artificially released abalone, Haliotis discus hannai at the marine farming area in Jeollanam-do in 2007 was very efficient by showing the recapture of 2.0-5.2 ind./m2 and the survival rate of 60-67%. The growth of shell after 1 year was highest in Hwoenggando by 75.9 mm and the lowest in Hwasan by 64.6 mm. Our result especially showed that the effect of the stock recruitment was the most efficient when abalone was released. The shell growth of the released abalone was better when sea mustard (Undaria sp.) was provided as food (shell length was up to 23.9 mm) or predators were periodically removed (shell length was up to 23.8 mm) in order to enhance the effect of the artificial release than the control group. The recapture rate was also higher than the control. However due to the difficulty of managing the release areas, it will be more efficient to release the recruited stocks after considering various biological and ecological factors such as survey of suitable release areas, stock size, release density, and health of stocks.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the movement and home range of the red-tongued viper snake (Gloydius ussuriensis) from June 2006 to June 2009. This snake species inhabits an islet on Jeju Island, Gapado. A total of 132 individual snakes were marked during the study. Among the marked individuals, the number of snakes recaptured more than once was 22 (16.8 %) and the number of individuals recaptured more than twice was eight (6.1 %), indicating a relatively low recapture rate. The durations from capture to recapture varied from 1 to 710 days. However, the capture points were not much different, indicating that the moved distance of snakes and the interval between capture-recapture were not correlated. The home ranges of the Red-tongued viper snakes calculated from data of the snakes which were captured more than three times using the MCP(minimum convex polygon) method were $8{\sim}167m^2(64.0{\pm}57.0m^2)$, suggesting that this snake is relatively sedentary. Home range size differences between female ($Mean=62.0m^2$) and male ($Mean=66.0m^2$) snakes were not significant. In the red-tongued viper population of Gapado, there was no statistically significant relationship between body size and home range size although it was positively correlated (r=0.675). Our results provide valuable data to understand life patterns of the red-tongued viper snakes and will be useful when conducting further ecological studies on other snake species.
