실제 이미지에서 현저성과 맥락 정보의 영향을 고려한 시각 탐색 모델 (Visual Search Model based on Saliency and Scene-Context in Real-World Images)

  • According to much research on cognitive science, the impact of the scene-context on human visual search in real-world images could be as important as the saliency. Therefore, this study proposed a method of Adaptive Control of Thought-Rational (ACT-R) modeling of visual search in real-world images, based on saliency and scene-context. The modeling method was developed by using the utility system of ACT-R to describe influences of saliency and scene-context in real-world images. Then, the validation of the model was performed, by comparing the data of the model and eye-tracking data from experiments in simple task in which subjects search some targets in indoor bedroom images. Results show that model data was quite well fit with eye-tracking data. In conclusion, the method of modeling human visual search proposed in this study should be used, in order to provide an accurate model of human performance in visual search tasks in real-world images.

사회적 자기이미지와 가상공간에서의 아바타 이미지 - 이상적 이미지와 실제적 이미지를 중심으로 - (Social Self Image and Avatar Image in the Virtual World: Focus on Ideal-Self Image and Actual-Self Image)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between one's social-self image and Online Avatar image. Influence of these virtual images on one's attitude toward real world and commitment to the virtual world was examined. In addition, the gender difference was examined. A structural equation model with social self image as exogenous variable and influence of Avatar as endogenous variable was designed. Real and ideal Avatar images were the mediating variable in the model. Survey questionnaire was developed and data from 425 respondents were analyzed. Results indicated that the conceptual model was a good fit to the data. Respondents who perceived their social self-images importantly were likely to have real images of Avatars. Ideal image and real image had significant on commitment to virtual world and attitudes toward the real world. For male respondents, social self image had stronger influence on real image of Avatar and ideal image had stronger influence on commitment to virtual world than female respondents.

과학과 상상력의 중첩성 (The superposition of Science and Imagination)

  • Gaston Bachelard had a revolutionary progress in the field of human understanding by proposing his theory of image and imagination. His theory of the new image was so powerful, almost all areas of human science, particularly that of literary criticism, were strongly influenced and this influence continues until today. Today almost everyone accepts his theory of the image without much objection, but not rarely asked where began his transfer from the philosophy of science to the images. We propose a hypothesis that the beginning of the new concept of Bachelard's image was inspired by studies of contemporary science, especially quantum mechanics. The Heisenberg's uncertainty principle was the core of quantum mechanics, and opens new perspectives on the material world. We could summarize the message of the uncertainty principle : the material world is made up of various layers, and the material can not be measured by the location and movement at the same time. So we must have a new point of view of another dimension to know this material world. Bachelard had accepted this view of Heisenberg and developed his own theory of epistemological rupture. What is revolutionary in the theory of Bachelard's image is the fact that he looked at the images with the new perspective. The human psyche is another world compared to the rational world that dominates our daily lives. Bachelard insists that the image can not be explained by the concept. The fantasy world is a totally different world to that of rationality. That is why it can not be explained by the language of rationality as the concept. The imaginary world exists independently of the real world, but it is superimposed on the real world. These two worlds are influencing each other, and it is between these two world where our daily lives continues. The declaration of Bachelard 'image is a specific reality' is never a metaphor or rhetorical expression. This is an ontological expression that must truthfully. The imaginary world is a world built on the image and it works according to its own law. It is not a representation or copy of the real world. But the world of imagination are not alone. It exists in the same time and space with the world of science. It is superimposed with the world of science. Both two world influence each other. Bachelard has made a revolutionary change by studying the images. He gave them their own place. It has changed the views on the images that were treated as mere representations of reality. Thanks to him, the image can have its own value, that of a factor that creates reality. Bachelard shows how we can go deep into the source of being and the universe if we look at the pictures with the eyes of other dimensions.

High-Resolution Satellite Image Super-Resolution Using Image Degradation Model with MTF-Based Filters

  • Super-resolution (SR) has great significance in image processing because it enables downstream vision tasks with high spatial resolution. Recently, SR studies have adopted deep learning networks and achieved remarkable SR performance compared to conventional example-based methods. Deep-learning-based SR models generally require low-resolution (LR) images and the corresponding high-resolution (HR) images as training dataset. Due to the difficulties in obtaining real-world LR-HR datasets, most SR models have used only HR images and generated LR images with predefined degradation such as bicubic downsampling. However, SR models trained on simple image degradation do not reflect the properties of the images and often result in deteriorated SR qualities when applied to real-world images. In this study, we propose an image degradation model for HR satellite images based on the modulation transfer function (MTF) of an imaging sensor. Because the proposed method determines the image degradation based on the sensor properties, it is more suitable for training SR models on remote sensing images. Experimental results on HR satellite image datasets demonstrated the effectiveness of applying MTF-based filters to construct a more realistic LR-HR training dataset.

Tiled Stereo Display System for Immersive Telemeeting

  • In this paper, we present an efficient tiled stereo display system for tangible meeting. For tangible meeting, it is important to provide immersive display with high resolution image to cover up the field of view and provide to the local user the same environment as that of remote site. To achieve these, a high resolution image needs to be transmitted for reconstruction of remote world, and it should be displayed using a tiled display. However, it is hard to transmit high resolution image in real time due to the limit of network bandwidth, and so we receive multiple images and reconstruct a remote world with received images in advance. Then, we update only a specific area where remote user exists by receiving low resolution image in realtime. We synthesize the transmitted image to the existing environmental map of remote world and display it as a stereo image. For this, we developed a new system which supports GPU based real time warping and blending, automatic feature extraction using machine vision technique.

  • Augmented Reality (AR) is a useful technology for various industrial systems. This paper suggests a new playground system which uses markerless AR technology. We developed a virtual playground system that can learn physics and kinematics from the physical play of people. The virtual playground is a space in which real scenes and CG are mixed. As for the CG objects, physics of the real world is used. This is realized by a physics engine. Therefore it is necessary to analyze information from cameras, so that CG reflects the real world. Various games options are possible using real world images and physics simulation in the virtual playground. We think that the system is effective for education. Because CG behaves according to physics simulation, users can learn physics and kinematics from the system. We think that the system can take its place in the field of education through entertainment.

  • 가상현실을 비교적 치밀하게 다룬 워쇼스키 형제 감독의 영화 ‘매트릭스(Matrix)'는 영화 개봉 이후 많은 매니아 층을 확보하면서, 다양한 형태의 문화 상품으로 차용되었다. 여타의 영화나 방송 프로그램에서 패러디됨은 물론이고 영화 속에 차용된 의상이나 소품 등은 문화의 트렌디로 상품화되었다. 이런 인기의 원인은 영화의 세련된 영상미와 주인공들의 매력적인 외모 덕도 있었겠지만, 무엇보다도 영화 내용의 신선함이 많은 반향을 일으켰기 때문이다. 주인공이 실재라고 믿어 왔던 세계가 진실이 아니라는 데서 오는 혼동, 그리고 그 진실을 파헤치고 다른 이들을 허상의 세계에서 구원하려는 자유에의 의지, 육체의 감각이 받아들이는 진실과 마음(정신)의 진실들 사이에서 갈등하는 주인공의 모습은 이데아를 갈망하며 살아가는 영화 밖 사람들의 이야기와 맞물려 있다. 결국 실재에 대한 확신이 없어지고 현실과 비현실의 차이가 무의미해진 첨단 기술의 시대의 위조된 이미지의 전복이 일어나는 상황을 제시하면서 많은 이들에게 공감을 얻고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이것을 쟝 보드리야르가 강조하는 ‘파생실재, 과도실재(hypereel)’와 연관시켜 실재의 이미지가 그 이상으로 과도하게 복사되어 소비되는 현실에 대해 논의하고자 한다. 매트릭스의 세계에서는 현실의 대상이 기술적인 프로그래밍으로 대체되면서 본질이 이미지에게 살해당하는 이미지 폭력이 일어나고 있다. 현실보다 더 현실적인 재현, 원본 보다 더 원본의 행세를 하는 세계에서는 오로지 기호만 소비되고 생산된다. 즉, 모든 것이 완벽하게 프로그래밍 되고 조작되는 이미지들은 지시 대상, 즉 목적이 없기 때문에 조작된 위기와 같은 저지 전략으로 생산된다. 그것이 실재를 인위적으로 부활시키는 시뮬라시옹의 단계인 것이다. 본 연구는 매트릭스의 가상 세계에 대한 분석을 통해 현실과 위조된 모사 사이의 경계가 흐려지거나 사라진 현재의 포스트모던적 상황을 보드리야르의 시뮬라크르 이론에 기반하여 연구하고자 한다.

An Adaptive Tone Reproduction for High Dynamic Range Image

  • A high dynamic range (HDR) image can represent real world scenes that have a wide range of luminance intensity. However, compared with the range of real world luminance, conventional display devices have a low dynamic range (LDR). To display HDR images onto conventional displayable devices such as monitors and printers, we propose the logarithmic based global reproduction algorithm that considers the features of the image using reproduction parameters. Based on the characteristics of the image, we first modify the input luminance values for reproducing perceptually tuned images and then obtain the displayable output values directly. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves good subjective results while preserving details of the image; furthermore, the proposed algorithm has a fast, simple and practical structure for implementation.

Design and Implementation of a Real-time Region Pointing System using Arm-Pointing Gesture Interface in a 3D Environment

  • In this paper, we propose a method to estimate pointing region in real-world from images of cameras. In general, arm-pointing gesture encodes a direction which extends from user's fingertip to target point. In the proposed work, we assume that the pointing ray can be approximated to a straight line which passes through user's face and fingertip. Therefore, the proposed method extracts two end points for the estimation of pointing direction; one from the user's face and another from the user's fingertip region. Then, the pointing direction and its target region are estimated based on the 2D-3D projective mapping between camera images and real-world scene. In order to demonstrate an application of the proposed method, we constructed an ICGS (interactive cinema guiding system) which employs two CCD cameras and a monitor. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed method are also verified on the experimental results of several real video sequences.

위성영상을 기반으로 한 GIS 응용 시스템 개발 (On Development of the GIS Application Based on Satellite Images)

  • 최근까지도 GIS는 벡터 데이터를 활용하는 방법이 대종을 이루고 있다. 그러나 벡터데이터는 축척변경의 용이성, 작은 용량의 데이터 등 여러 가지 측면에서 장점을 갖고 있으나, 현실세계를 잘 반영하지 못하는 단점을 갖고있다. 이에 반해 인공위성영상은 데이터의 용량이 크지만, 실세계를 잘 반영하는 장점이 있다. 그러므로 이 연구에서는 요즈음 컴퓨터의 용량과 처리 속도가 빨라지고 있는 추세이므로 벡터데이터와 래스터데이터를 접목하여, 위성영상을 기반으로 하는 GIS 응용 시스템을 개발하고자 한다. 이 응용 시스템은 PC용 Visual C++과 데이터베이스 관리를 위한 MS Access 파일을 이용하여 개발되었으며, 개발된 시스템의 기반에 사용된 위성영상은 LANDSAT, KOMPSAT, IKONOS 영상이며, 화면출력을 위해 각 영상의 해상도에 적합한 해상도별 축척을 결정하였다.
