Study to detect bond degradation in reinforced concrete beams using ultrasonic pulse velocity test method

  • Concrete technologists have used ultrasonic pulse velocity test for decades to evaluate the properties of concrete. However, the presented research work focuses on the use of ultrasonic pulse velocity test to study the degradation in steel-concrete bond subjected to increasing loading. A detailed experimental investigation was conducted by testing five identical beam specimens under increasing loading. The loading was increased from zero till failure in equal increments. From the experimentation, it was found that as the reinforced concrete beams were stressed from control unloaded condition till complete failure, the propagating ultrasonic wave velocity reduced. This reduction in wave velocity is attributed to the initiation, development, and propagation of internal cracking in the concrete surrounding the steel reinforcement. Using both direct and semidirect methods of testing, results of reduction in wave velocity with evidence of internal cracking at steel-concrete interface are presented. From the presented results and discussion, it can be concluded that the UPV test method can be successfully employed to identify zones of poor bonding along the length of reinforced concrete beam. The information gathered by such testing can be used by engineers for localizing repairs thereby leading to saving of time, labor and cost of repairs. Furthermore, the implementation strategy along with real-world challenges associated with the application of the proposed technique and area of future development have also been presented.

Everyday Physical Reasoning by Qualitative Reasoning (정성적 추론을 이용한 일상의 자연 현상에 대한 추론)

  • To develop a cognitive system with the flexibility and breadth of human reasoning, it's very important to construct a large scale knowledge base which includes commonsense knowledge as well as expert knowledge. This paper introduces a cognitive system which provides a commonsense reasoning for everyday physical phenomena using qualitative reasoning. It is difficult to apply previous qualitative reasoning to commonsense reasoning since it provides reasoning based on abstract concepts which are apart from everyday real world concepts. Our research provides commonsense reasoning based on sketches and real world concepts by integrating qualitative reasoning and general large scale Cyc knowledge base. Our system has been implemented and tested on various examples.

An Exploratory Study on the Extraction of Game Addiction Factors (게임 중독 요인추출에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • This research is the concept of a game addiction absorbed in the game based on the review and analysis of factors that affect the characteristics of game addiction, it is appropriate to extract the purpose of factors. Game addiction factor is composed of a total of 32 questions, and a total of 356 people, to collect data through surveys. Factor analysis of the collected data to the target as a result of physical and mental problems, loss of control, tolerance, and avoidance of real world consists of three sub-factors. Factors that affect flow of tolerance and loss of control, and avoid the real world, including two sub-factors that could determine. Diagnostic game addiction factor in the reliability coefficients (Cronbach alpha) is a robust .966 aspects in the event. The game addiction scale score of 90-game addiction by category 'regular user', 90 points and 114 between the terms 'potentially dangerous user' and 13 percent of the overall. Finally, more than 115 points in the 'high-risk user' has been classified as 5% of the overall distribution of the notice that. Such factors extract game is a game addict, addicted users of the game and tend to properly evaluate and navigate game addiction-related problems early in the game addiction and found it could be used properly.

A New Approach of BK products of Fuzzy Relations for Obstacle Avoidance of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

  • This paper proposes a new heuristic search technique for obstacle avoidance of autonomous underwater vehicles equipped with a looking ahead obstacle avoidance sonar. We suggest the fuzzy relation between the sonar sections and the properties of real world environment. Bandler and Kohout's fuzzy relational method are used as the mathematical implementation for the analysis and synthesis of relations between the partitioned sections of sonar over the real-world environmental properties. The direction of the section with optimal characteristics would be selected as the successive heading of AUVs for obstacle avoidance. For the technique using in this paper, sonar range must be partitioned into multi equal sections; membership functions of the properties and the corresponding fuzzy rule bases are estimated heuristically. With the two properties Safety, Remoteness and sonar range partitioned in seven sections, this study gives the good result that enables AUVs to navigate through obstacles in the optimal way to goal.

An Effective Visualization of Intricate Multi-Event Situations by Reusing Primitive Motions and Actions

  • The efficient implementation of various physical actions of agents to respond to dynamically changing situations is essential for the simulation of realistic agents and activities in a cyber world. To achieve a maximum diversity of actions and immediate responsiveness to abrupt changes in situations, we have developed an animation technique in which complex actions are recursively constructed by reusing a set of primitive motions, and agents are designed to react in real-time to abrupt ambient changes by computationally satisfying kinematic constraints on body parts with respect to their goals. Our reusing scheme is extended to visualize the procedure of realistic intricate situations involving many concurring events. Our approach based on motion reuse and recursive assembly has clear advantages in motion variability and action diversity with respect to authoring scalability and motion responsiveness compared to conventional monolithic (static) animation techniques. This diversity also serves to accommodate the characteristic unpredictability of events concurring in a situation due to inherent non-determinism of associated conditions. To demonstrate the viability of our approach, we implement several composite and parallel actions in a dynamically changing example situation involving events that were originally independent until coincidentally inter-coupled therein.

  • This study aims to identify the special features of high-concept funology observed in fashion products and expressional media by exploring funology in an era of high-concept, the emotional paradigm of the 21st century. High-concept funology in today's fashion can be explained as follows: First, 'virtual reality', which is often seen in fashion shows and fashion commercials, enhances consumer participation and involvement with blurred boundaries between the real world and the virtual world. With the expansion of various forms of real-time communication with consumers, positive images of the brand are being projected to the consumers. Second, 'form transformability', which is often found in fashion products, promotes customers' purchase desire as they are able to present themselves in a more versatile way in the fashion product that is changeable in various designs. Third, 'integration of different fields', which is easily found in various fashion goods, engages consumers in a mutual interaction under an entertaining setting with the product that is made to satisfy their needs attuned to their digital lifestyle. Fourth, 'interactive responsiveness', which is mainly recognized in fashion stores and commercials, is characterized by its interactive playfulness that encourages consumer participation through entertainment contents and promotes brand intimacy, eventually adding more value to its name.

The Analysis of Energy Consumption for an Electric Vehicle under Various Driving Circumstance (준중형급 전기자동차의 주행특성에 따른 에너지 소모량 분석)

  • This paper discusses the energy consumption for a mid-size electric vehicle(EV) under various conditions. In order to analyze which driving style is more efficient in terms of the system of the EV, we develop the electric vehicle model and apply several types of speed profiles such as different steady speeds, acceleration/deceleration, and a real world driving cycle including the elevation profile obtained from a GPS device. The results show that the energy consumption of the EV is affected by the operating efficiency of components when driving at low speed, while it depends on required power at wheels when driving at high speed. Also this paper investigates the effect of the elevation of a road and the rate of electrical braking on the energy consumption as well as the fuel economy of a conventional vehicle model under the same conditions.

  • 본 논문에서는 XML(eXtensible Markup Language)을 위한 데이터 모델을 제시하기 위해 현재 광범위하게 사용되고 있는 관계형 데이터베이스(relational database) 개념을 적용한다. 관계형 데이터베이스는 업무 요구사항의 분석으로부터 고수준의 개념적 데이터 모델을 사용해서 데이터베이스에 대한 개념적 스키마(conceptual schema)를 생성한 다음, 고수준 개념적 데이터 모델을 구현 데이터 모델로 변환하여 논리적 데이터베이스 스키마를 생성한다. 이때, 고수준 개념적 데이터 모델링의 대표적인 방법으로 ER모델을 사용하고, 구현 데이터 모델로 관계 모델(relation model)을 사용한다. XML은 문서의 논리적 구조를 정의하는 DTD와 XML Schema 등을 갖는다. XML의 DTD와 정보 모델링 기법인 E/R 모델은 모두 작은 세계(real world)를 모델링하는 도구들이라고 할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 XML의 DTD와 E/R 모델의 구성요소들을 분석하여 서로 사상(mapping)시키는 'XML을 위한 데이터 모델(A Data Model for XML)'을 제시한다. 최종적으로 제시된 XML을 위한 데이터 모델에 의해 작은 세계(real world)을 모델링하는 XML DTD에서 정의한 구조(XML Structure)을 따르는 유효한 XML문서(validate XML document)들은 관계형 데이터베이스에 저장할 수 있게 된다.

Supply Chain Network Design Considering Environmental Factor and Transportation Types

  • Most important thing when designing and implementing a supply chain network is to consider various problems which may occur in real world situation. In this paper, we propose a supply chain network considering two problems (environmental factor and transportation types) under real world situation. CO2 emission amount as environmental factor is considered since it is usually generated from production and transportation processes. Normal delivery, direct delivery and direct shipment as transportation types are also considered since many customers ask various transportation types for delivery or shipment of their products under on-line or off-line purchase environment. The proposed supply chain network considering environmental factor and transportation types is represented in a mathematical formulation and implemented using hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) approach. In numerical experiments, several scales of supply chain networks are presented and implemented using HGA approach. The performance of the HGA approach is compared with those of some conventional approaches under various measures of performance. Finally, it is proved that the performance of the HGA approach is superior to those of the others.

Research on Cognitive Effects and Responsiveness of Smartphone-based Augmented Reality Navigation (스마트폰 증강현실 내비게이션의 인지능력과 호응도에 관한 연구)

  • Most of the car navigation systems pzrovide 2D or 3D virtual map-based driving guidance. One of the important issues is how to reduce cognitive burden to the driver who should interpret the abstracted information to real world driving information. Recently, an augmented reality (AR)-based navigation is considered as a new way to reduce cognitive workload by superimposing guidance information into the real world scene captured by the camera. In particular, head-up display (HUD) is popular to implement AR navigation. However, HUD is too expensive to be set up in most cars so that the HUD-based AR navigation is currently unrealistic for navigational assistance. Meanwhile, smartphones with advanced computing capability and various sensors are popularized and also provide navigational assistance. This paper presents a research on cognitive effect and responsiveness of an AR navigation by a comparative study with a conventional virtual map-based navigation on the same smartphone. This paper experimented both quantitative and qualitative studies to compare cognitive workload and responsiveness, respectively. The number of eye gazing at the navigation system is used to measure the cognitive effect. In addition, questionnaires are used for qualitative analysis of the responsiveness.
