  • For many years the development and verification of on-board flight software have been essentially performed on STB (Software Test Bed) environments which consist of real hardware in KARI. During development of on-board flight software on STB, we experienced many difficulties such as the late delivery of target hardware and limitation to access STB simultaneously by multiple developers. And it takes too much time and cost to build up multiple STBs. In order to successfully resolve this kind of problems, the software-based spacecraft simulator has been developed. The simulator emulates the on-board computer, I/O modules and power controller units and it supports the debugging and test facilities to software engineers for developing flight software. Also the flight software can be loaded without any modification and can be executed as pseudo real-time. This paper presents the architecture and design of software-based spacecraft simulator, and flight software development and verification under this environment.

  • As the global warming threats to humanity, renewable energy is considered the key solution to overcome the climate change. In this circumstance, distributed PV systems are being expanded significantly its market share in the renewable energy industry. The performance of inverter is the most important component at PV system and numerous researches are focusing on it. In order to improve the inverter, PV simulator is an essential device to experiment under various load and conditions. This paper proposes the PV Power-Hardware-In-Loop simulator (PHILS) with real-time processing converted electrical and mathematical models to improve computation speed. Single-diode PV model is used in MATLAB/SIMULINK for the PV PHILS to boosting computation speed and dynamic model accuracy. In addition, control algorithms for sub-components such as DC amplifier, measurement device and several interface functions are implemented in the model. The proposed PV PHILS is validated by means of experiments with commercial PV module parameters.

  • This paper proposes a Hardware-In-Loop(HIL) Simulator for a Wind Turbine and an operational control algorithm to evaluate the performance of a wind turbine control system. It provides not only for the validation of the control logics, safety functions and H/W failure, but also for the high reliability of the wind turbines (by reducing/and the reduction of the operating expense(OPEX) through performance evaluation tests with complex scenarios. On the other hand, the proposed simulator uses MATLAB, CODER, and the PLC library to operate in synchronization with the hardware, and a real-time processing-based wind turbine module including a dynamic model and control system, wind module, grid module and host PC to manage the HIL-simulator. Several experiments were carried out under the above concept to verify the effectiveness of the proposed WT HIL-simulator.

  • With increasing automation in ships and the development of autonomous ships, an IPMS (Integrated Platform Management System) in ship needs to integrate and process large amounts of real-time data from various equipment operating on different operating systems. A ship IPMS simulator based on data distribution service (DDS) was developed and its performance was evaluated to handle data processing similar in real ship environment. Errors were monitored while 1,000 topics/sec were asynchronously published and subscribed from data acquisitive units (DAUs) and an IPMS server operating on different operating systems. Except for the loss of some topics during the initial 4 seconds, topics were received without an error thereafter. The developed simulator demonstrates the feasibility of using DDS to integrate various control systems using different operating systems in actual ships.

  • Variable message sign (VMS), which is used for providing real-time information on traffic conditions and accident occurrences, is one of the important components of intelligent transportation systems. It is essential that the scheme of VMS message phase and duration should be designed with the consideration of drivers' message reading time that will be depended on various causal factors, such as the amount of VMS messages, drivers' travel speed, and geometric conditions. However, there have been not much efforts to explore the relationships between the drivers' message reading time and the above causal factors. Driving simulator experiments were conducted to obtain drivers' message reading time with respect to the amount of VMS messages, drivers' travel speed, and different geometric conditions. Regression modeling techniques were applied to develop an estimation model for drivers' message reading time. Probabilistic outcomes of the proposed model would be greatly utilized to design proper VMS message phase and duration.

  • To verify performance or conduct experiments using actual robots, a lot of costs are needed such as robot hardware, experimental space, and time. Therefore, a simulation environment is an essential tool in robotics research. In this paper, we develop the HUMIC simulator using ROS and Gazebo. HUMIC is a humanoid robot, which is developed by HCIR Lab., for human-robot interaction and an upper body of HUMIC is similar to humans with a head, body, waist, arms, and hands. The Gazebo is an open-source three-dimensional robot simulator that provides the ability to simulate robots accurately and efficiently along with simulated indoor and outdoor environments. We develop a GUI for users to easily simulate and manipulate the HUMIC simulator. Moreover, we open the developed HUMIC simulator and GUI for other robotics researchers to use. We test the developed HUMIC simulator for object detection and reinforcement learning-based navigation tasks successfully. As a further study, we plan to develop robot behavior intelligence based on reinforcement learning algorithms using the developed simulator, and then apply it to the real robot.

  • Uncertainty of power system operation increases due to complexity and facilities diversification in the power system. Therefore the importance of SCADA(Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system which obtain and manage the actual data in real-time is very important. Accordingly in the studies of power system analysis, the efforts to include real-time power system analysis in simulation and applications are made in many ways. The real-time communication characteristics of SCADA system is considered so as to develop the power system analysis program that matches actual system conditions. The observation and management of SCADA system is realized by Intouch which is mainly used for factory automation and PSS/E(Power System Simulator for Engineers) provides real time system data. SQL DB and Python language is used for real-time communication between the softwares. It is very comfortable to use the various functions in Intouch WindowMaker.

  • In this paper, design, development and evaluation of DIP(Database Interface Program) are presented. The main purpose of this study is to improve the simulation quality to get more realistic response of target system. The designed and developed major function is composed of flexible memory structure, efficient arithmetic database language and high speed interpolation/extrapolation algorithm. To evaluate the operation speed and accuracy of returned data, trim simulation is performed based on in-house software and, DIP is applied to existing real-time simulator such as engineering HQS(Handling Quality Simulator) to evaluate reliability and performance. The result of evlaution reveals that calculation speed and data accuracy are satisfied, and flight performance is satisfied in the real-time simulator environments.

  • Many cities, recently, have convertedoptimized fixed-time control to adaptive traffic system in the control of their signalized traffic network. The expected benefit from the adaptive traffic system is its ability to constantly modify signal timing to most effectively accommodate changed traffic conditions. While the potential benefits from this control structure may be significant, few studies have compared the effect of implementing this method of signal control against other alternative signal control strategies, because it is too difficult to evaluate the efficiency of the real-time adaptive system. The objectives of this research are : to develop a microscopic simulator and to compare the effect at isolated intersections, corridors, and networks between the fixed signal timing plan and adaptive traffic signal system. This simulator will have allowed more sophisticated analysis techniques for the study of traffic control. Also, this research using this simulator evaluated a real-time traffic responsive signal system used in Seoul Korea

  • In this paper, we construct the TMO-based object group model on distributed environment, and analyze and evaluate the executability for distributed real-time service of our object group model by developing the distributed real-time application simulator applying the model. The Time-triggered Message-triggered Object(TMO) is a real-time server object having real-time property itself. The TMO-based object group is defined as a set of objects which logically reconfigured the physically distributed one or more TMOs on network by a given distributed application. For supporting group management of the server objects, the TMO-based object group we suggested provides the functions which register and withdraw the solver objects as a group member to an arbitrary object group, and also provides the functions which insert and delete the access rights of server objects from clients. Also, our model was designed and implemented to support the appropriate object selection and dynamic binding service for a single TMO as well as the duplicated TMOs, and to support the real-time scheduling service for the clients which are requesting the service. Finally, we developed the Defence System against Invading Enemy Planes(DSIEP) simulator as a practical example of distributed real-time application by applying our model, and evaluated the adaptability of distributed service strategies for the group components and the executability of real-time services that the TMO-based object group model provides.
