  • The Real Time Kinematic (RTK) technique is the most productive and accurate GPS positioning method today, as it can be determinate position within few centimeters instantly. This method is widely used for applications such as surveying, structure monitoring and machine guidance etc. In order to perform RTK processing for large scale systems (i.e. precise vehicle monitoring with many rovers), many expensive RTK receivers and same number of bidirectional communication units have to be installed to collect observation data communicate with the reference site and monitor its RTK solutions. Moreover, if applications require remote control or apply sensing instruments, we have to install computers at each rover. To limit expense and complexity of system management with a large number of rovers, we have developed server based RTK processing platform to share RTK function for all rovers. The system can be process many GPS stations with a single personal computer. we have also developed a specialized dual frequency GPS receiver unit without on-board RTK processing capability to reduce receiver cost in order to demonstrate the advantage of our server based RTK platform. This paper describes the concept of our server based RTK platform and specialized GPS receiver unit with existing applications in Japan.

  • Recognition of real time locations of crews for a naval ship is important, not only for the operation efficiency but also for the safety of onboard crews in the ship. More than 100 crews are dwelling in a modem naval ship and they are involved in various duties. Moreover many visitors come in and out frequently while the ship is moored in a harbor. It sometimes requires considerable time and efforts to find a person for urgent mission. It would enhance the operational efficiency if locations of onboard crews are recognized and monitored in real time. An active type RFID tag, which has a specific ID number, is distributed to each crew member, which should be carried during his stay in the ship. A number of fixed type RFID readers are to be located at the major passages of the ship, which are connected to the main computer via Local Area Network. The location of a crew would be identified by the ID number of his RFID tag and the location of the RFID reader which detected the RFID tag. A middleware is needed to process the collected data in the main computer. The data is fed to application softwares, which actually display locations of the concerned crews. The software is coded using GUI (Graphic User Interface) for better user friendliness, which has the function of storing the location history of a crew, and sending warning messages to appropriate persons, if unallowable behavior is detected. An auxiliary naval ship is selected for an experimental application study of the proposed system. It turns out that the required budget and time for the realization of the system is within the allowable limits. But complementary measures to protect the privacy of onboard crews should be considered and adopted, before the application of the system is realized.

  • In this paper, we propose a real-time system for counting people. The proposed system uses an impulse radio ultra-wideband(IR-UWB) radar to estimate the number of people in a given location. The proposed system uses learning-based classification methods to count people more accurately. In other words, a feature vector database is constructed by exploiting the pattern of reflected signals, which depends on the number of people. Subsequently, a classifier is trained using this database. When a newly received signal data is acquired, the system automatically counts people using the pre-trained classifier. We validated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by presenting the results of real-time estimation of the number of people changing from 0 to 10 in an indoor environment.

  • The purpose of this study was to propose useful suggestion by analyzing preventive replacement policy under which there are minor and major failure. Here, major failure is defined as the failure of system which causes the system to stop working, however, the minor failure is defined as the situation in which the system is working but there exists inconvenience for the user to experience the degradation of performance. For this purpose, we formulated an expected cost rate as a function of periodic replacement time and the number of system update cycles. Then, using the probability and differentiation theory, we analyzed the cost rate function to find the optimal points for periodic replacement time and the number of system update cycles. Also, we present a numerical example to show how to apply our model to the real and practical situation in which even under the minor failure, the user of system is not willing to replace or repair the system immediately, instead he/she is willing to defer the repair or replacement until the periodic or preventive replacement time. Optimal preventive replacement timing using two variables, which are periodic replacement time and the number of system update cycles, is provided and the effects of those variables on the cost are analyzed.

  • We study a dynamical system that was originally defined by Romik in 2008 using an old theorem of Berggren concerning Pythagorean triples. Romik's system is closely related to the Farey map on the unit interval which generates an additive continued fraction algorithm. We explore some number theoretical properties of the Romik system. In particular, we prove an analogue of Lagrange's theorem in the case of the Romik system on the unit quarter circle, which states that a point possesses an eventually periodic digit expansion if and only if the point is defined over a real quadratic extension field of rationals.

  • This paper deals with an architecture of network-based control system using the CAN(Controller Area Network) protocol and its traffic analysis. It is difficult to determine an optimal network-based control architecture for a specific AGV(Autonomous Guided Vehicle) system with a manipulator arm. The fixed number of periodic messages to be occurred is pre-defined in the system. To determine whether the proposed system architecture is effective or not, we perform traffic analysis for the real-time communication of all messages. Through simulations, the range of transmission speed is found satisfying required conditions and the permissible number of additional sensors is investigated for improving the system performance, when the sampling periods of analog sensors are determined under fixed condition that the transmission speed is over 500Kbps.

  • In this research, we propose packet scheduling algorithm considering different QoS characteristics of real-time traffic and non-real-time traffic in the next generation wireless communication system serving the multimedia traffic and a new efficient framing method cooperated with this packet scheduler. When the selected traffic classes of the selected users are transmitted, our proposed framing method can increase the number of serviced traffic classes by mixing the many different traffic classes within one frame considering data rate decided by the allocated AMC (Adaptive Modulation and Coding) option. Using this proposed method, the fairness among the traffic classes can be achieved and the system performance for total throughput and delay can be enhanced. Simulations are performed to analyze the performance of the proposed framing method. Our proposed packet scheduler and framing method will be applied to the next generation multimedia wireless communication system serving many traffic classes.

  • Biological sensory systems continuously monitor and analyze changes in real-world environments that are relevant to an animal's specific behavioral needs and goals. Understanding the sensory mechanisms and information processing principles that biological systems utilize for efficient sensory data acquisition may provide useful guidance for the design of smart-sensing systems in engineering applications. Weakly electric fish, which use self-generated electrical energy to actively sense their environment, provide an excellent model system for studying biological principles of sensory data acquisition. The electrosensory system enables these fish to hunt and navigate at night without the use of visual cues. To achieve reliable, real-time task performance, the electrosensory system implements a number of smart sensing strategies, including efficient stimulus encoding, multi-scale virtual sensor arrays, task-dependent filtering and online subtraction of sensory expectation.

  • A road recognition system or Lane departure warning system is an early stage technology that has been commercialized as early as 10 years but can be optional and used as an expensive premium vehicle, with a very small number of users. Since the system installed on a vehicle should not be error prone and operate reliably, the introduction of robust feature extraction and tracking techniques requires the development of algorithms that can provide reliable information. In this paper, we investigate and analyze various real-time road detection algorithms based on color information. Through these analyses, we would like to suggest the algorithms that are actually applicable.

  • As the number and diversity of educational services increases rapidly on the Internet, we are faced with some service availability problems including persistent service monitoring and fault tolerancy. In this paper, we implemented a service monitoring & fault management system to enhance this availability and reduce administration cost of WBI system. In order to validate our system, we also illustrated an effective real-time monitoring and automatic fault announcement & recovery from our experiences in a real world WBI environment.
