As one way of changing a teacher-fronted, grammar-based reading class into a meaningful, fun-creating one, this paper compared teacher- fronted reading with student-centered reading framed upon cooperative learning. In a study in which each type of reading method was conducted for college students in an EFL reading course for a period of one semester, data were gathered via questionnaires. The results showed that though each type of reading instruction came with its own strengths and weaknesses, student-centered reading instruction was preferred for various reasons. Most important, through an active participation in cooperative work, subjects were motivated and interested in L2 reading much, were exposed to various reading strategies and skills, and practiced them in a friendly, low-anxiety learning climate.

인성교육에 있어서 독서의 중요성과 가치에 대해서는 많은 연구에서 강조하고 있으나 정작 독서를 통한 인성교육 프로그램을 개발하는데 도움을 줄 수 있는 도구 혹은 프레임워크는 전무한 실정이다. 독서를 통한 인성교육 프로그램을 개발하기 위해서는 독서교육의 관점과 인성교육의 관점을 함께 고려한 프레임워크의 개발이 선행되어야 한다. 따라서 본 연구는 독서교육을 담당하는 사서교사가 독서를 통한 인성교육 프로그램을 개발하고자 할 때 참고할 수 있는 프레임워크를 개발하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구에서는 독서 및 인성과 관련된 핵심 변인으로서 인성 덕목, 인성교육에 적합한 독서자료, 독서전략, 수업 방법으로 구분하여 교육 프로그램을 개발할 때 고려해야 할 요소를 분석한 후에 이를 바탕으로 프레임워크를 제안하였다. 본 연구에서 제안한 프레임워크는 분석 내용과 동일하게 프로그램을 통해 개발하고자 하는 인성 덕목, 인성교육에 적합한 독서자료, 인성교육을 위한 독서전략, 인성교육에 적합한 수업방법으로 구성하였다.

One of important topics in mathematics education research is communication. Mathematical communication consists of writing, reading, listening and speaking. But, research on reading has not yet to have a commensurate emphasis, despite important changes that have occurred in the theory and practice of communication. This study is intended to search for reading in school mathematics. First, we explore theories of reading and reading instruction. Second, the factors involved in reading are examined. These factors are learners, texts and teachers. Third, we provide a variety of reading strategies that are reading and enacting strategy, reconstructing strategy, presupposing strategy, becoming an author strategy, sketch to stretch strategy and reading- cooperative learning strategy. They will help students to foster students' mathematical ability as well as reading skill.

현하 한국대학생들의 독서율이 점차 저하되고 있다. 독서부진의 제반 요인을 여러 부분에서 진단, 고찰하고, 독서저해요인을 추출함으로써 독서생활을 조장하고 독서율을 향상시키는 방안을 강구하고자 한다. 특히 본 연구에서는 대학생들의 독서철학 확립을 위한 논의를 정리하고, 또한 대학생 독서부진 해결을 위한 교육제도적 방안으로서 독서학점부과제도 또는 독서인증제도의 필요성을 강조하고자 한다.

This study proposes using children's literature as a means of teaching and learning English as a foreign language and suggests practical strategies on the basis of transactional theory of reading suggested by Rosenblatt (1994, 1995). This study suggests three novels written for children or young adults: On My Honor (1986) by Marion Dane Bauer, The Giver (1993) by Lois Lowry and Hatchet (1987) by Gary Paulsen. These texts were selected because of their diverse topics, easy and comprehensible language, engaging stories, and authentic and rich expressions, making them effective materials for foreign language learners. This paper is organized as follows: First, it reviews research on teaching literature in English education and response-oriented language teaching to provide theoretical background of literature-based language teaching and learning. Second, it provides the background of the texts selected for the study. Third, it develops diverse, practical strategies for instructors who intend to use children's literature in EFL teaching. We expect to guide EFL instructors in adopting children's literature in their English class by connecting theory and practice and by providing diverse methods and strategies, and sample responses by EFL university students.

This study aimed to explore EFL learners' beliefs and preferences about reading tasks and to examine the reading processes that they use for making sense of text. The subjects were comprised of 107 college students who were non-English majors and aged 19-28 years. Based on scores achieved on a reading comprehension test, they were divided into two groups (more-skilled and less-skilled readers) and asked to respond to a survey in class. The results of the survey revealed that: (1) a majority rate themselves as fair readers, which might be indicative of the insecurity they feel toward L2 reading; (2) authentic texts (especially magazines) and popular media appear to be their favorite reading materials; (3) unknown vocabulary is a major impediment to their L2 reading comprehension; (4) the more-skilled readers manifest a meaning centered view of reading, whereas the less-skilled readers center on vocabulary; and (5) both groups employ a multistrategic approach to L2 reading; however, the less-skilled readers are less successful in determining the meaning of unknown vocabulary. Pedagogical implications for EFL classroom teachers are provided.

이 연구는 독서동아리에 대한 사회적 지원이 확대되고 있는 상황에서, 지자체의 지원을 받고 운영된 독서동아리를 사례로 실제 운영현황은 물론 정책적 지원이 독서동아리 활동에 얼마나 유용한지에 대한 검증작업을 수행해보고, 향후 독서동아리 활성화를 위해 해결해야 할 과제가 무엇인지 논의하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해 이 연구에서는 (1) 독서동아리의 구성요건과 독서동아리 참여 현황을 전반적으로 살펴보고, (2) 독서동아리의 운영실태를 바탕으로 동아리 회원의 관점에서 살펴본 동아리 활동의 만족도를 분석해봄으로써 지금까지의 성과와 지원활동의 의미를 확인하면서 (3) 향후 독서동아리 활성화를 위해 검토하고 준비해야할 과제가 무엇인지에 대해 논의하였다. 논의에 필요한 데이터의 수집을 위해 A지자체의 지원을 받은 15개 독서동아리 회원을 대상으로 설문조사를 수행하였으며, 수집된 데이터는 빈도분석을 이용하여 분석하였다.

This study of 322 elementary school children examined the interrelatedness of internet preference, frequencies of internet activities, usage of children's popular internet sites, knowledge of internet sites, and children's reading abilities. Usage of children's popular internet sites and knowledge of internet sites are interrelated with decoding and comprehension. Age, knowledge of internet sites, and sex predicted children's reading abilities. The extent of exposure to various internet activities differentiated children's reading comprehension. Results show that processes of reading text information and multimedia materials through the internet involve not only the skills of reading traditional printed texts but also new reading strategies.

장애인 독서문화 활동의 진흥은 정보소외계층의 정보격차해소, 독서문화 활동을 통한 국민의 삶의 질 향상이라는 도서관 핵심 사명을 수행하는 주요한 업무이다. 활성화 방안을 도출을 위해 독서문화 진흥정책과제에서 사용하는 4개 과제 영역을 틀로 사용하였으며, 국내외 도서관 장애인서비스 분석을 통하여 시사점을 도출하였다. 연구결과 현재 도서관 장애인서비스는 장애인 독서환경조성, 균등한 독서 기회 제공 서비스가 대부분이고, 장애인 독서생활화 및 독서운동 활성화과제는 매우 부족하였다. 독서 생활화를 위한 독서교육, 독서체험, 이용자중심의 프로그램 개발이 필요하며, 장애인 독서운동 확산을 위하여 도서관 홍보 전략을 활용하는 것이 필요하다.

This empirical test of the efficacy of the literature-based reading instruction was conducted with 63(31 male and 32 female) 2nd grade elementary school children. Subjects in the experimental group had 40-45 minutes literature-based reading instruction twice weekly; those in the control group had only basic text reading. Procedures included a pilot study, pre-test, experimental period, and post-test. Research instruments included the Basic Learning Skill Test(Park et al., 1988), the Qualitative Reading Inventory(Leslie & Caldwell, 1990), and the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey(Mckenna & Kear, 1990). Data were graded and scored by each research question and then analyzed with a t-test of differences between the groups. The experimental group showed higher word recognition, text comprehension, and story grammar strategies than the control group. They also showed more improvement in each of these categories than the control group.
