  • The purpose of this study is to identify the basic concept of thruster design through the visualization firing test on a hydrazine thruster. We designed the visual catalyst bed on the basis of the 1lbf hydrazine thruster for a low earth orbit satellite and observed visually the internal catalyst bed reaction.

  • In this paper, we will review the thruster based reaction wheel momentum dumping method for low Earth orbit satellite. Thruster based momentum dumping is widely used in GEO satellites by performing momentum dumping and attitude control using thrusters at the specific time. LEO satellite should perform momentum dumping at any time, thus it is not appropriate to use GEO satellite's momentum dumping method. In this research, we will review the method for LEO satellite, which perform momentum dumping always and use reaction wheels for attitude control during dumping. To reduce thruster's valve on and off counts, we propose to use the maximum pulse width for thruster operation. To prevent attitude error increase by thrusters, we adjust the thruster operation interval. Through simulation, we verify the proposed method's effects.

  • Design and performance evaluation of $H_2O_2$ monopropellant thrusters to be used at reaction control of space launch vehicles were presented in this paper. Design thrust level was determined as 100, 250 Newton which is nominal thrust level for commercial space launch vehicles. Qualification thruster models including solenoid valves were developed after the reactor design were evaluated at engineering thruster models. Each thruster was evaluated by measurement of characteristic velocity, thrust, specific impulse, and pulse response times at sea level test condition.

  • KSLV(Korea Space Launch Vehicle)-I is designed as a launch vehicle to enter a 100 kg-class satellite to the LEO(Low-Earth Orbit). Attitude angles of the upper-stage, including roll, pitch and yaw are controlled by cold gas thruster system using nitrogen gas. The thruster for the KSLV-I is the main pneumatic valve in the RCS(Reaction Control System). In this paper, the design, function tests, and environment tests of the thruster for KSLV-I are described. The developed thrusters are experimentally evaluated and successfully passed the required qualification and acceptance tests.

  • This paper deals with the development of Engineering Model for the TCU( Thruster Control Unit) and simulation system of the reaction control system using cold gas. TCU communicates with TLM(Telemetry) and ground control console so that it transmits monitoring data of pressures and temperatures for reaction control system. The cpu/communication board performs MIL-STD-1553B communication, RS-422 communication, data input/output processing and program loading to EEPROM. We applied Intel 80386DX Microprocessor, 256Kbytes EEPROM and 256Kbytes SRAM for program storage and execution. Also, we developed the direct access interface circuit to EEPROM and simulation system for TCU.

  • The performance evaluation of a micro monopropellant thruster is described in this paper. The platinum which has stable physical and chemical properties is used as a catalyst. The ceramic form, named Isolite is chosen as a catalyst bed. Hydrogen peroxide whose concentration is up to 90wt% is supplied into thruster by direct pressurization with nitrogen gas. The $c^*$ efficient is calculated to evaluate the performance of a thruster. The pressure rise time, pressure decent time and reaction delay are synthetically considered.

  • A 50 N monopropellant thruster being developed for attitude control in a variety of aerospace application systems is described in this paper. Ninety percent hydrogen peroxide was selected as a propellant, since it is much less hazardous than hydrazine. A scaled down thruster with aluminum oxide loaded with the platinum in the reaction chamber was tested to determine propellant decomposition onto a catalyst. A scaled up 50 N thruster, with a catalyst bed of 3 cm in diameter and 4 cm in length, was evaluated by decomposition efficiency based on temperature, ${\eta}_T$, efficiency of characteristic velocity, ${\eta}_{C^*}$, and measurement of thrust. The performance of a 50 N thruster was 40.5 Newton in thrust, about 100 % in ${\eta}_T$, and 98 % in ${\eta}_{C^*}$, and 125 sec in specific impulse at sea level.

  • A numerical analysis was performed to predict the thermo-fluid dynamic characteristics of hydrazine monopropellant reaction in the thruster combustor and nozzle. A 1-D porous model was introduced to simulate catalytic reaction by iridium in the combustor while 2-D axisymmetric analysis was applied to predict the nozzle flow. The chemical species and temperature variations were predicted by changing the injection pressure and mass flow rate and their results were validated by comparison with limited experimental data. The thrust variation with injection pressure could be estimated using the current 1-D combustor modeling.
