  • In this paper, the sound radiation from a clamped circular plate with a viscoelastic layer excited by impact force is studied both analytically and experimentally. The composite plate vibrations are obtained by using the normal mode analysis and the eigenvalues are obtained by a Mindlin plate theory including the rotary inertia and shear deformation, The contact force developed between the ball and the plate with attached layers is obtained by Hertz contact theory. The radiated sound pressure is calculated by the Rayleigh integral. Prediction of the waveforms of sound radiating from the plate with attached layers and a method for reducing noise generation from the plate by impact force are also shown in this paper.

  • Leakage and Bragg condition of optical waveguides with blazed grating profile are evaluated in detail by using novel and rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) based on eigenvalue problem. The blazed waveguides classified as symmetric, sawtooth and asymmetric gratings occur leaky-wave stop-band at Bragg conditions and anomalies based on Rayleigh condition near Bragg conditions. Furthermore, DFB properties of blazed waveguides at Bragg conditions are analyzed by applying longitudinal equivalent transmission-line with characteristic impedance of periodic grating. The numerical results show that the reflected power of DFB waveguides is maximized at Bragg conditions in which leaky-wave stop-bands occur.

  • A simplified method for the calculation of buckling and vibrational characteristics of initially stressed rectangular plate and antisymmetric angle-ply laminated plates is presented in this paper using the natural frequencies under unloading state. The equation of motion of rectangular plate with two opposite edges simply supported is investigated on the basis of Rayleigh-Ritz method and Mindlin plate theory with effect of the curvature term. The relationships of the non-dimensional natural frequencies with initial stresses the coeffcients of critical buckling and the boundaries of the dynamic principal instability region can be characterized by the non-dimensional natureal frequencies under unloading state. Numerical examples are presented to verify the simplified equations and to illustrate potential applications of the analysis.

  • In this paper, by using the Rayleigh-Sommer field theory and the cross-spectral density function, the analytical expression for the intensity distribution of a double half-Gaussian hollow beam in a turbulent atmosphere is obtained. The influence of the initial spot size of this beam on its propagation properties in a turbulent atmosphere is simulated, and the intensity distributions for such beams with different spot sizes are obtained. The results show that the initial spot size has an important influence on the propagation properties in the near field, while this influence in the far field is very weak.

  • Leakage and Bragg condition of optical waveguide with asymmetric rectangular grating profile are evaluated in detail by using novel and rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) based on eigenvalue problem. The optical waveguide composed by asymmetric rectangular grating occur leaky-wave stop-bands at Bragg conditions, and anomalies based on Rayleigh-Wood condition near Bragg conditions. Furthermore, DFB properties of the guiding structure at Bragg conditions are analyzed by applying longitudinal equivalent transmission-line with characteristic impedance of periodic grating. The numerical results show that filtering characteristics that maximize the reflected power of DFB waveguide are activated near Bragg conditions, in which leaky-wave stop-bands occur.

  • This paper provides the free vibrations of chiral carbon nanotubes. The governing equations of Flügge theory is considered for vibration frequencies of chiral single walled carbon nanotubes. The solution of frequency equation is obtained from a novel model for better representation of stubby and short vibration characteristics of chiral tubes with clamped-clamped and clamped-simply supported end conditions. For the harmonic response of this tube, the model displacement function is adopted. The variational approach Rayleigh-Ritz method with kinetic and strain energies are used. The Lagragian function is differentiated with respect to unknown functions. The frequency equation is written in compact form to solve with MATLAB software. The frequencies of chiral SWCNTs for first ten aspect ratios as small level are investigated. The results shown as for decreasing the aspect rations, the frequencies are increases. The presented results of this model are verified with experimental and numerical results, which found as an excellent agreement.

  • In this research, for the first time the instability boundaries for a spinning shaft reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets undergone the principle parametric resonance are determined and examined taking into account the gyroscopic effect. In this respect, the extracted equations of motion in our previous research (Ref. Asadi et al. (2023)) are implemented and efficiently upgraded. In the upgraded discretized equations the effect of the Rayleigh's damping and the varying spinning speed is included that leads to a different dynamical discretized governing equations. The previous research was about the free vibration analysis of spinning graphene-based shafts examined by an eigen-value problem analysis; while, in the current research an advanced mechanical analysis is addressed in details for the first time that is the dynamics instability of the aforementioned shaft subjected to the principal parametric resonance. The spinning speed of the shaft is considered to be varied harmonically as a function of time. Rayleigh's damping effect is applied to the governing equations in order to regard the energy loss of the system. Resorting to Bolotin's route, Floquet theory and β-Newmark method, the instability region and its accompanied boundaries are defined. Accordingly, the effects of the graphene nanoplatelet on the instability region are elucidated.

  • The theoretical method is developed to investigate the vibration characteristics of the combined cylindrical shells with an annular plate joined to the shell at any arbitrary axial position. The structural rotational coupling between shell and plate is simulated using the rotational artificial spring. For the translational coupling, the continuity conditions for the displacements of shell and plate are used. For the uncoupled annular plate, the transverse motion is considered and the in-plane motions are not. And the additional transverse and in-plane motions of the coupled annular plate by shell deformation are considered in analysis. Theoretical formulations are based on Love's thin shell theory. The frequency equation of the combined shell with an annular plate is derived using the Rayleigh-Ritz approach. The effect of inner-to-outer radius ratio, axial position and thickness of annular plate on vibration characteristics of combined cylindrical shells is studied. To demonstrate the validity of present theoretical method, the finite element analysis is performed.

  • A stability theory of a damped cantilever column under sub-tangential follower forces is first summarized based on the stability map. It is then demonstrated that internal and external damping can be exactly transformed to Rayleigh damping so that the damping coefficients can be effectively determined using proportional damping. Particularly a parametric study with variation of damping coefficients is performed in association with flutter loads of Beck's column and it is shown that two damping coefficients can be correctly estimated for real systems under the assumption of Rayleigh damping. Finally a frequency equation of a cantilever beam subjected to both a sub-tangentially follower force and two kinds of damping forces is presented in the closed-form and its stability maps are constructed and compared with FE solutions in the practical range of damping coefficients.

  • Free vibration of non-uniform embedded nanoplates based on classical (Kirchhoff's) plate theory in conjunction with nonlocal elasticity theory has been studied. The nanoplate is assumed to be rested on two-parameter Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation. Non-uniform material properties of nanoplates have been considered by taking linear as well as quadratic variations of Young's modulus and density along the space coordinates. Detailed analysis has been reported for all possible casesof such variations. Trial functions denoting transverse deflection of the plate are expressed in simple algebraic polynomial forms. Application of the present method converts the problem into generalised eigen value problem. The study aims to investigate the effects of non-uniform parameter, elastic foundation, nonlocal parameter, boundary condition, aspect ratio and length of nanoplates on the frequency parameters. Three-dimensional mode shapes for some of the boundary conditions have also been illustrated. One may note that present method is easier to handle any sets of boundary conditions at the edges.
