  • Natural convection of air with Pr=0.7 between two horizontal plates with small magnitude non-uniform temperature distribution[${\in}{\Delta}Tsin({\kappa}X/H)$, H : gap width, X : horizontal coordinate] in the lower plate is numerically(${\in}=0.01$) investigated. In the conduction-dominated regime with $Ra{\leq}1700$, two upright cells are formed over one wave length($2{\pi}/{\kappa}$). For small wave number, the flow becomes unstable with increase of Rayleigh number, and multicellular convection occurs above a critical Rayleigh number. The flow patterns are classified by the number of eddies over one wave length. When ${\kappa}=1$, a transition of $2{\rightarrow}4{\rightarrow}6$ eddy flow occurs with increase of Rayleigh number, and no hysteresis phenomenon is observed. Dual and triple solutions are found for ${\kappa}=1$, and transitions of $10{\rightarrow}8$, $8{\rightarrow}6$, $6{\rightarrow}4{\rightarrow}2$ eddy flow occur with decrease of Rayleigh number.

  • The onset of convection in a mushy layer is analyzed by using linear stability theory in time-dependent solidification of a binary melt. A simplified model of a near-eutectic mush, in which the mush is assumed to be a porous block, is used and the propagation theory is applied to determine the critical conditions for the onset of convection. The present critical Rayleigh number is higher than the existing experimental result and also theoretical results obtained by considering the mushy layer with an overlying liquid layer. The constant pressure (permeable) condition applied on the mush-liquid interface produces a lower critical Rayleigh number, which is closer to the experimental results of aqueous ammonium chloride solution, compared with the impermeable condition.

  • A full-sized model for the horizontally oriented metal cask containing 21 spent fuel assemblies has been considered to evaluate the internal natural convection behavior within a dry shield canister (DSC) filled with helium as a working fluid. A variety of two-dimensional CFD numerical investigations using a turbulent model have been performed to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics and the velocity distribution of natural convection inside the canister. The present numerical solutions for a range of Rayleigh number values ($3{\times}10^6{\sim}3{\times}10^7$) and a working fluid of air are further validated by comparing with the experimental data from previous work, and they agreed well with the experimental results. The predicted temperature field has indicated that the peak temperature is located in the second basket from the top along the vertical center line by effects of the natural convection. As the Rayleigh number increases, the convective heat transfer is dominant and the heat transfer due to the local circulation becomes stronger. The heat transfer characteristics show that the Nusselt numbers corresponding to $1.5{\times}10^6$ < Ra < $1.0{\times}10^7$ are proportional to 0.5 power of the Rayleigh number, while the Nusselt numbers for $1.0{\times}10^7$ < Ra < $8.0{\times}10^7$ are proportional to 0.27 power of the Rayleigh number. These results agreed well with the trends of the experimental data for Ra > $1.0{\times}10^7$.

  • Numerical analysis by SIMPLE algorithm has been performed to predict the characteristics of flow and heat transfer in channels between the printed circuit boards of an electronic cabinet. It is assumed that the electronic parts release uniform heat flux per unit axial length to the cooling air. The air flow between channels is assumed fully developed laminar, incompressible, and mixed convective. In this study, the electronic parts are mounted on both sides of the prinked circuit boards by two kinds of configuration such as the zig-zag and the symmetric one. The Rayleigh numbers ranging from 0 to 10$^{6}$ are considered to predict the characteristics of the main flow and the secondary flow occurred by natural convection, the temperature distribution in channel, the heat transfer rate from heated electronic parts and the increase of friction factor by natural convection. As the results of numerical calculation, several conclusions are drawn as follows. The influence of natural convection on the flow characteristics appears strong when the Rayleigh number is above 10$^{4}$. The main axial flow rate decreases by a half or more at the Rayleigh number of 10$^{6}$ . Although the friction factor increases as Rayleigh number increases, the increasing rate of heat transfer is higher than that of the friction factor. The cooling efficiency of the zig-zig-configuration is superior to that of the symmetric configuration at same Rayleigh number.

  • The natural free convection in a vertical tube with uniform heat flux and temperature has been studied by the theoretical analysis is of governing equations and experimental measurements. In order to determine the Characteristics of Convective heat transfer in the tube, a dimensionless Rayleigh number is introduced. The relationship between Nusselt and Rayleigh number is compared with the numerical analysis of finite difference method and experiment. Nusselt number obtained from the experimental measurements are in a good agreement with the calculated values, and the relationship equations between Nusselt and Rayleigh number are obtained.

  • In this research a time dependent thermal and solutal convection was computationally investigated for the physical vapor transport of the mixture of $Hg_2Cl_2-I_2$ system with for the convective regime from thermal Rayleigh number of $2.16{\times}10^6$ up to $1.7{\times}10^7$ with marching time to a steady state problem. With time marching, the convective cells are decreased for the thermal Rayleigh number of $2.16{\times}10^6$, and increased for the thermal Rayleigh number of $1.7{\times}10^7$. The convective flow structures are found to be essentially time independent on the horizontal orientation of the enclosure with respect to the gravity vector, and on the other hand, time dependent on the vertical orientation of the enclosure with respect to the gravity vector.

  • Low Rayleigh number thermal convection in a fluid layer confined between two-infinite horizontal walls kept at spatially sinusoidal temperature distributions, T_L=T_m+\Delta T\sin \kappax,\;T_U=T_m+\Delta T\sin(\kappax-\beta)$, is theoretically investigated by a regular perturbation expansion method. For small wave numbers, an upright cell is formed between the two walls at $\beta$=0. The cell is tilted, as the phase difference increases, and a flow with tow counter-rotating eddies occurs at $\beta=\pi$. when the wave number is large, isolated eddies are formed near the lower and upper walls, for all the phase differences. There exists a wave number at which maximum heat transfer rate at the walls occurs, at each of the phase differences. And the wave number increases with increase of the phase difference. for a fixed wave number, the heat transfer rate decrease with increase of the phase difference.

  • A numerical study of unsteady mixed convection in a cavity with high viscous fluid is presented. Finite volume method was employed for the discretization and PISO algorithm was used for calculating pressure term. The parameters governing the problem are the Rayleigh number ($10^3\;{\leq}\;Ra\;{\leq}\;10^5$), the Reynolds number (0 < Re $\leq$ 1), and the aspect ratio (0.5 $\leq$ AR $\leq$ 2). The fluid used is silicon oil, a high prandtl number fluid, Pr = 909.1. The results show velocity vectors and temperature distributions. It is found that the periodic flows in a cavity are observed at very low Reynolds numbers, and the period of periodic flow decreases with increasing Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers, and increases with increasing aspect ratio. Also, the Reynolds number range of periodic flow increases with increasing Rayleigh numbers and aspect ratio.

  • Natural convection of a fluid with the Prandtl number of 7(water) in a horizontal annulus with constant temperature walls is numerically investigated. The inner cylinder is hotter than the outer cylinder. The flows are classified by the number of eddies in a half annulus. It is found that dual or triple solutions exists above a critical Rayleigh number for an annulus with a aspect ratio $D_i/L=4$. Transitions of $3{\rightarrow}1$ and $2{\rightarrow}1$ eddy flow occur with decrease of Rayleigh number. However, reverse transitions of $1{\rightarrow}3$ and $1{\rightarrow}2$ eddy flow do not occur with increase of Rayleigh number, and no hysteresis phenomenon is observed. In the regime of triple solutions, the 3 eddy flow has the largest mean Nusselt number value and the 1 eddy flow has the smallest value.
