  • An inflection point on a curve is a point where the curvature vanishes. An inflection point is useful for various geometric operations such as the approximation of curves and intersection points between curves or curve approximations. An inflection point on planar Bezier curves can be easily detected using a hodograph and a derivative of hodograph, since the closed from of hodograph is known. In the case of rational Bezier curves, for the detection of inflection point, it is needed to use the first and the second derivatives have higher degree and are more complex than those of non-rational Bezier curvet. This paper presents three methods to detect inflection points of rational Bezier curves. Since the algorithms avoid explicit derivations of the first and the second derivatives of rational Bezier curve to generate polynomial of relatively lower degree, they turn out to be rather efficient. Presented also in this paper is the theoretical analysis of the performances of the algorithms as well as the experimental result.

  • The objective of this investigation is to compare the geometric precision of Rigorous Sensor Model and Rational Function Model for QuickBird images. In rigorous sensor model, we use the on-board data and ground control points to fit an orbit; then, a least squares filtering technique is applied to collocate the orbit. In rational function model, we first use the rational polynomial coefficients provided by the satellite company. Then the systematic bias of the coefficients is compensated by an affine transformation using ground control points. Experimental results indicate that, the RFM provides a good approximation in the position accuracy.

  • In this paper a rational cubic interpolant spline with linear denominator has been constructed and it is used to constrain interpolation curves to be bounded in the given region. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the interpolant to satisfy the constraint have been developed. The existence conditions are computationally efficient and easy to apply. Finally the approximation properties have been studied.

  • A passive control using flaps will be an alternative solution for flutter stability and buffeting response of a long suspension bridge. This method not only enables a lightweight economic stiffening girder without an additional stiffness for aerodynamic stability but also avoid the problems from the malfunctions of control systems and energy supply system of an active control by winglets and flaps. A time domain approach for predicting the coupled flutter and buffeting response of bridge deck with flaps is investigated. First, the flutter derivatives of bridge deck and flaps are found by experiment. Next, the derivation of time domain model of self-excited forces and control forces of sectional model is reported by using the rational function approximation. Finally, the effectiveness of passive flap control is investigated by the numerical simulation. The results show that the passive control by using flaps can increase the flutter speed and decrease the buffeting response. The experiment results are matched with numerical ones.

  • This study investigates the applicability of the direct identification of flutter derivatives in the time domain using Rational Function Approximation (RFA), where the extraction procedure requires either a combination of at least two wind speeds or one wind speed. In the frequency domain, flutter derivatives are identified at every wind speed. The ease of identifying flutter derivatives in the time domain creates a paradox because flutter derivative patterns sometimes change in higher-order polynomials. The first step involves a numerical study of RFA extractions for different deck shapes from existing bridges to verify the accurate wind speed combination for the extraction. The second step involves validating numerical simulation results through a wind tunnel experiment using the forced vibration method in one degree of freedom. The findings of the RFA extraction are compared to those obtained using the analytical solution. The numerical study and the wind tunnel experiment results are in good agreement. The results show that the evolution pattern of flutter derivatives determines the accuracy of the direct identification of RFA.

  • Let f be a smooth G map from a nonsingular real algebraic G variety to an equivariant Grassmann variety. We use some G vector bundle theory to find a necessary and sufficient condition to approximate f by an entire rational G map. As an application we algebraically approximate a smooth G map between G spheres when G is an abelian group.

  • A fast and robust method of grid generation to multiple functions has been developed for flow analysis in three dimensional space. It is based on the Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline of an approximation method. The grid generation method, details of numerical implementation. examples of application, and potential extensions of the current method are illustrated in this paper.
