RE silicides 중 ytterbium silicide는 가장 낮은 electric work function을 갖고 있어 n-channel schottky barrier MOSFETs의 source/drain으로 주목받고 있다.

The synergistic solvent extraction of rare earth elements such as europium and yttrium has been investigated by the extractant with crown ether as an additive. Macrocyclic ligand as host-guest compounds form more stable complexes with metal ions which have the similar size of the cavity of crown ether. In our previous study[14] founded that the extraction used fatty acid of the various alkyl chain length. Based on the results of the previous experiment, the synergistic separation effect of two metals investigated that the hexanoic acid had was the worst extraction effect which added a crown ether such as 18-crown-6 ether, 15-crown-5 ether, and 12-crown-4 ether. In this study, the concentrations of hexanoic acid have showed the separation effect, and then the concentrations and kind of crown ether are performed for synergistic extraction at the hexanoic acid concentration of the highest separation effect. As a results, the separation rate is the highest value of 1.72 at 0.05 M hexanoic acid, and 0.002M 15-crown-5 ether is the best value in other concentrations and kind of crown ether, it is about twice of using only hexanoic acid. Moreover, the extraction species of two metals has been founded $MLR_3{\cdot}3RH$ form when added the crown ether.
Recently, an amount of waste electronic devices such as LED and trichromatic fluorescent lamp has increased with the development of electronic industry. Reportedly, rare earth metals such as yttrium and europium have been discovered in the waste electronic devices. In order to improve the selectivity of yttrium and europium, the effects of the following factors on recovery experiment have been considered : i) fatty acids with various alkyl chain lengths, ii) the concentration of extractant, and iii) pH. The results show that the extraction efficiencies decrease at the same pH with decreasing the concentration of extractant and so $pH_{0.5}$ (That value of pH in an aqueous phase at which the distribution ratio is unity at equilibrium: 50% of the solute is extracted (E = 0.5) only when the phase ratio is unity.) moves into higher pH. The highest selectivity of yttrium and europium was obtained with tetradecanoic acid as extractant. The extraction mechanism of yttrium and europium was varied with the change of concentration of the tetradecanoic acid. $MR_3$single-species was formed from the yttrium and europium ion in the extractant concentration less than 0.1 M. On the other hand, the yttrium or europium ion is solvated with three molecules of tetradecanoic acid monomer like $MR_3{\cdot}$ 3RH in the extractant concentration more than 0.1 M.

Allanite crystals rich in rare-earth elements(REE) occur in soil developed on top of anorthositic rocks in the Jungsu-ri area of Okjong-myun, Hadong-run, where large Ti orebodies are embedded in the bed rock. In this study allanite is investigated mainly by transmitted light microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, atomic absoption spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrocopy. In addition, its specific gravity and micro=indentation hardness value are measured. Allanite occurs with max. dimension of $3cm{\times}6cm$ and coexists with quartz, epidote, zircon, biotite and muscovite. It shows nearly nonmetamict crystallinity, although ${\alpha}$-particles bombardment from the disintegration of the radioactive element Th is detected by an autoradiography. The allanite is particularly enriched in REE(19.88-23.99 wt.%), but is deficient in CaO(8.35-10.29wt.%). Genesis of the allanite in this area is not understood yet. It is, however, assumed to have been formed from magmatic fluid rich in REE and Ti, based on the facts that it ocexists with zircon and that it has high $TiO_2$(0.89-1.13 wt.%) whose concentration is significant in the country rocks.
The electrochemical behavior of $Nd_2O_3-La_2O_3-NiO$ mixed oxide including rare earth resources has been studied to synthesize $La_{0.5}Nd_{0.5}Ni_5$ alloy in a LiCl molten salt. The $Nd_2O_3-La_2O_3-NiO$ mixed oxide was converted to $NiNd_2O_4$ (spinel) and $LaNiO_3$ (perovskite) structures at a sintering temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$. The spinel and perovskite structures led a speed-up in the electrolytic reduction of the mixed oxide. Various reaction intermediates such as Ni, $NiLa_2O_4$ were observed during the electrochemical reduction by XRD analysis. A possible reaction route to $La_{0.5}Nd_{0.5}Ni_5$ in the LiCl molten salt was proposed based on the analysis result.

In the present work, an electrowinning process in the LiCl-KCl/Cd system is considered to model and analyze the electrotransport of the actinide and rare-earth elements. A simple dynamic modeling of this process was performed by taking into account the material balances and diffusion-controlled electrochemical reactions in a diffusion boundary layer at an electrode interface between the molten salt electrolyte and liquid cadmium cathode. The proposed modeling approach was based on the half-cell reduction reactions of metal chloride occurring on the cathode. This model demonstrated a capability for the prediction of the concentration behaviors, a faradic current of each element and an electrochemical potential as function of the time up to the corresponding electrotransport satisfying a given applied current based on a galvanostatic electrolysis. The results of selected case studies including five elements (U, Pu, Am, La, Nd) system are shown, and a preliminary simulation is carried out to show how the model can be used to understand the electrochemical characteristics and provide better information for developing an advanced electrowinner.
The $2{\nu}_{C=0}$ + amide III combination band spectrum of acetamide (AA) was obtained in very dilute solutions of AA+lanthanide shift reagents (LSR) in carbon tetrachloride over the range of $15^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}C$. It was found that only 1 : 1 AA-LSR complex is formed by the interaction between carbonyl oxygen of AA and central metal ion(Ln(Ⅲ)) in LSR. The thermodynamic parameters for Ln(III)${\cdot}$O=C bond were determined by computer analysis of concentration and temperature dependent spectra. ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$ for the coordination of AA to Eu$(dpm)_3$, Yb$(dpm)_3$, and Pr$(dpm)_3$ have been found to be -39.1, -28.4, and -25.5 kJ/mol, respectively. It has shown that this type of ion-dipole interaction is more than twice stronger compared to the dipole-dipole interaction in the amide linkage, and largely depending on the steric hindrence effect by the bulky dpm groups around central metal ion (Ln(III)) rather than the ionic potential effect of central metal ion itself.

Two kinds of Nd$_{1+x}$Ba$_{2-x}$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$, the sintering samples and zone melting samples, were heat treated under pure Ar at 95$0^{\circ}C$. The substitution of Nd ion for Ba ion in the Nd$_{1+x}$Ba$_{2-x}$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ before and after the heat treatment were investigated by XRD. In order to know the effects of the heat treatment, the T$_{c}$ and J$_{c}$ of samples with the heat treatment and those without the heat treatment by Ar were comparatively studied. The results show that the substitution of Nd for Ba decreased, T$_{c}$, and J$_{c}$ increased after the treatment under Ar at 95$0^{\circ}C$. The Nd$_{1+x}$Ba$_{2-x}$Cu$_3$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ samples were oxygenated under pure oxygen at 30$0^{\circ}C$. From the XRD pattern it was found that the sample with x< 0.4 could transfer from tetragonal phase to orthorhombic phase after the oxygenation, but the sample with x>0.4 could not make the phase transition even after a long time oxygenation.ion even after a long time oxygenation.ation.n.ation.ation.
First observation of uranium using a diode laser was published recently. The experiment was performed by the optogalvanic spectroscopy using diode lasers. A laser source causes the current change in a hollow cathode discharge lamp when metal atoms in plasma absorb the diode laser light. The optogalvanic signal is collected by detecting the current change. This work is the extended investigation of our previous research, the uranium detection using a diode laser. New electronic transitions of uranium and thorium in 775∼850 nm were investigated using diode lasers. In addition, the Rb(Ⅰ) optogalvanic spectra at 780.02 nm and 794.76 nm were studied. The Rb(Ⅰ) spectrum at 780.02 nm showed the isotopic features and hyperfine splittings. This work provides a key idea that the diode lasers are useful in the specrochemical analysis of the radioactive actinides that have a rich spectrum with transitions which can be easily reached with AlGaAs diode lasers. Also, this study shows that the diode lasers can be an important tool to find the spectroscopic parameters of actinides and rare earth elements which have not known.

Objectives: This study was performed to produce data on the pulmonary toxicity of neodymium oxide($Nd_2O_3$) by intratracheal instillation. Methods: Two groups of rats were exposed to neodymium oxide by intratracheal instillation with doses of 0.5 mg and 2.0 mg, respectively. At two days, four weeks and 12 weeks after exposure, body weight change, organ weight change and histopathological change were observed. At 12 weeks after exposure, lung function change was measured. Results: The body weight of rats in the high concentration group decreased after 12 weeks by 4-5% compared with the control group. At four weeks and 12 weeks after the administration of neodymium oxide, the absolute weight of the lungs of the high concentration group were significantly increased when compared with the control group(p<0.05). At 12 weeks after the injection of neodymium oxide, breath frequency and respiratory minute volume were increased, but inhalation time and expiratory time were decreased. Bronchiolar epithelial hyperplasia, alveolar type II cell hypertrophy/hyperplasia and foreign body granulomatous inflammation were observed in the high exposure group. Conclusions: Body weight decrease, lung absolute weight and breath frequency increase, and pathological lung change were all observed. We found that pulmonary toxicity of neodymium oxide nanoparticles by intratracheal instillation could be confirmed.
