We described a simple and efficient fabrication method for generating microfluidic channels with a circular-cross sectional geometry by exploiting the reflow phenomenon of a thick positive photoresist. Initial rectangular shaped positive photoresist micropatterns on a silicon wafer, which were fabricated by a conventional photolithography process, were converted into a half-circular shape by tuning the temperature to around $105^{\circ}C$. Through optimization of the reflow conditions, we could obtain a perfect circular micropattern of the positive photoresist, and control the diameter in a range from 100 to 400 ${\mu}m$. The resultant convex half-circular photoresist was used as a template for fabricating a concave polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) through a replica molding process, and a circular PDMS microchannel was produced by bonding two half-circular PDMS layers. A variety of channel dimensions and patterns can be easily prepared, including straight, S-curve, X-, Y-, and T-shapes to mimic an in vivo vascular network. To inform an endothelial cell layer, we cultured primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) inside circular PDMS microchannels, and demonstrated successful cell adhesion, proliferation, and alignment along the channel.
We prove that 3-D profile mapping using white light interferometry has systematic errors caused by aberrations of the optimal system. The tilt of an object invokes an offset between the object and the reference ray, which eventually makes the aberration cancel incompletely. The fringe peak of a white light interferogram is mainly affected by the aberration effect while the envelope peak remains stable. By the difference between the two peaks, it is easily confirmed how much the error existed in the fringe peak. Experimental results prove that the error caused by aberration is varied by object tilt, microscope NA, optics alignment within the range of $\pm$50nm.
In this study, the performance of foil thrust bearings was investigated by performing bearing take-off and load capacity tests, using an in-house designed and manufactured vertical bearing test rig. The mean take-off rotational speed and maximum load capacity of the bearing specimen were ~18,000 rpm and ~80 kPa, respectively. The vertical bearing test rig was observed to yield higher coefficients of friction and frictional torques than a horizontal bearing test rig under identical test conditions. This was a result of its structural characteristics, in that the bearing specimen is placed atop the thrust runner, which keeps it from being separated from the runner after the bearing take-off. In addition, bearing take-off was observed at a higher runner rotational speed as this structure keeps air from flowing between the top foil and runner surfaces, which requires a higher runner speed. The parallel alignment between the bearing specimen and runner surfaces can be maintained within a certain range more easily in a vertical test rig than in a horizontal test rig. Because of these advantages, Korean Industrial Standard, KS B 2060, recommends a vertical bearing test rig as the standard test device for foil thrust bearings.
Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to compare the internal fit of two different temporary restorations fabricated by dental CAD/CAM system and to evaluate clinical effectiveness. Methods: Composite resin tooth of the maxillary first molar was prepared as occlusal reduction(2.0mm), axial reduction(1mm offset), vertical angle(6 degree) and chamfer margin for a temporary crown and duplicated epoxy die was fabricated. The epoxy dies were used to fabricate provisional restorations by CAD/CAM milling technique or 3D-printing technique. The inner data from all crowns were superimposed on the master die file in the 'best-fit alignment' method using 3D analysis software. Statistical analysis was performed using a Wilcoxon's rank sum test for differences between groups. Results: It showed that the internal RMS(Root Mean Square) values of the additive group were significantly larger than those of other group. No significant differences in internal discrepancies were observed in the temporary crowns among the 2 groups with different manufacturing method. Conclusion: All the groups had the internal fit within the clinical acceptable range (< $50{\mu}m$). The continuous research in the future to be applied clinically for the adaptation of additive manufacturing technique are needed.

Cyclophilins (CYPs) are highly conserved ubiquitous proteins belong to the peptidyl prolyl cis/trans isomerase (PPIase) superfamily. These proteins are present in a wide range of organisms; they contain a highly conserved peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerase domain. A comprehensive database survey identified a total of 35 genes localized in all cellular compartments of Solanum lycopersicum L., but largely in the cytosol. Sequence alignment and conserved motif analyses of the SlCYP proteins revealed a highly conserved CLD motif. Evolutionary analysis predicted the clustering of a large number of gene pairs with high sequence similarity. Expression analysis using the RNA-Seq data showed that the majority of the SlCYP genes were highly expressed in mature leaves and blooming flowers, compared with their expression in other organs. This study provides a basis for the functional characterization of individual CYP genes in the future to elucidate their role(s) in protein refolding and long-distance signaling in tomatoes and in plant biology, in general.
Purpose: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a condition defined as pain and dysfunction of temporomandibular joints and masticatory muscles. Abnormal interconnections between temporomandibular muscles and cervical spine structures can cause the changes of postural alignment and balance ability. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in static balance ability in subjects with painrelated TMD. Methods: This study conducted on 25 subjects with TMD and 25 control subjects with no TMD. Pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) of the masseter and temporalis muscles were measured using a pressure algometer. Static balance ability was assessed during one leg standing using an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor. During balance task, the IMU sensors measured motion and transfer movement data for center of mass (COM) motion, ankle sway and hip sway. Results: PPTs of masseter and temporalis muscles were significantly lower in the TMD group than in the control group (p<0.05). One leg standing, hip sway, and COM sway results were significantly greater in the TMD group (p<0.05), but ankle sways were not different between group. Conclusion: We suggest pain-related TMD is positively related to reduced PPTs of masticatory muscles and to static balance ability. These results should be considered together with global body posture when evaluating or treating pain-related TMD.
UVO-Multiband Polarizing Imager System (UVOMPIS) is an ultraviolet to visible light multi-wavelength polarization/imaging system for Compact Advanced Satellite. We developed Linear Astigmatism Free-Three Mirror System (LAF-TMS) D200F2 as an optical system of UVOMPIS which has an entrance pupil diameter of 200 mm, a focal ratio of 2, a field of view of 2° × 4°. LAF-TMS is a confocal off-axis reflecting telescope system that removes linear astigmatism, and its all mirrors (M1, M2, M3) are optimized with the freeform surface to reduce high-order aberrations. Through the sensitivity analysis and Monte-Carlo simulation as the tolerance analysis, we can confirm the feasibility of the system, relatively sensitive parameters (tilt, decenter, despace, surface RMS error), and considerations for optomechanical design. From the sensitivity analysis, we can discover the relatively sensitive optical alignment parameters to a single perturbation. Further more, in the monte-carlo simulation, we investigate the minimum tolerance budget satisfying the required optical performance and whether the tolerance range is satisfied within manufacturing error.
A study was conducted on a tubular heat exchanger to improve its heat transfer rate by using a novel baffle plate design with discontinuous swirling patterns. The design consisted of perforated baffle plates with rectangular air deflectors positioned at varying angles. The tubes in the heat exchanger were arranged in a consistent alignment with the airflow direction and exposed to a uniform heat flux on their surfaces. Each baffle plate included sixteen deflectors inclined at the same angle and arranged in a clockwise pattern. This arrangement induced a swirling motion of the air inside a circular duct where the heated tubes were located, leading to increased turbulence and improved heat transfer on the tube surfaces. The spacing between the baffle plates was adjusted at different pitch ratios, and the Reynolds number was controlled within a range of 16,000 to 29,000. The effects of pitch ratios and inclination angles on the heat exchanger's performance were analyzed. The results indicated that using a baffle plate with rectangular deflectors inclined at 30° and a pitch ratio of 1.2 resulted in an average increase of 1.29 in the thermal enhancement factor.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the use of insoles in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders to assess the function and changes in pain when walking in daily life. Methods: Sixty-five patients with temporomandibular joint disorder, were selected, with 34 assigned to the control group and 31 to the experimental group. The control group walked more than 7,000 steps per day in their daily life, while the experimental group wore insoles and was instructed to take at least 7,000 steps every day. To evaluate the effect on temporomandibular joint pain, steady-state pain, maximum mouth opening, average pain, and the most severe pain were measured before and after the experiment. In addition, to determine function, mouth opening in a comfortable state, mouth opening pain, and the point of sound and the maximum degree of mouth opening were evaluated before and after the experiment. Results: After the experiment, pain, mouth opening, and sound points showed significant differences compared to the control group. However, there was no significant difference in the maximum mouth opening range. Conclusion: The application of air insoles to patients with temporomandibular joint disorder confirmed the function of the temporomandibular joint and its positive effects on pain.
Purpose: To compare of the results between anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction alone and combined with high tibial osteotomy for ACL ruptured knees with varus alignment. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 8 cases of ACL reconstruction combined with high tibial osteotomy (Group I) and 13 cases of ACL reconstruction alone (Group II) for varus angulated ACL ruptured knees (from March 2005 to February 2007). Mean age were 34.1 years (range: 20-53) in Group I, 34.9 years (range: 21-50) in Group II. Average follow up period were 22.6 months (range: 12-35) in Group I, 20 months (range: 13-33) in Group II. We analyzed clinical and radiological results. Results: There were no significant differences in clinical and radiologic results between two groups for IKDC scores, Lysholm knee scores, Lachman test, pivot shift test, KT-2000 arthrometer, $30^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ anterior drawer stress radiographs. Tegner activity scales and Cincinnati knee ligament rating scales were 4.9, 57.9 in Group I, and 5.6, 72.9 in Group II. Group I was statistically lower than Group II for Tegner activity scales and Cincinnati knee ligament rating scales (p<0.05). Conclusion: There were no significant differences in daily living between ACL reconstruction alone and combined with high tibial ostetomy for varus angulated ACL ruptured knees. However, ACL reconstruction combined with high tibial osteotomy could limit sport activity ability.
