  • There have been many studies on IEEE 802.15.4 for home area networks(HAN) in Smart Grids. Existing unslotted or slotted IEEE 802.15.4 has almost not met strict conditions of the U.S. Department Of Energy(DOE). This study proposed a improved algorithm that reduces collisions, delay time and changes in the delay time. For this purpose, numbers were given to nodes to make the transmission in the order of the node numbers. Since the probability of the occurrence of collisions would decrease compared to random transmission if the nodes were given numbers, Backoff time was set at 0. In the proposed Numbered-Unslotted-ZeroBackoff algorithm, when the packet size was 133 octets and less than 180 packets per second occurred, it was found that packet delivery ratio was over 99.99%, and that all the maximum delay, the mean delay and the minimum delay were less than 0.02 seconds. This paper could confirm that the algorithm proposed in this study met the strict conditions of the DOE.

  • When continuous media are transmitted over the communication networks, asynchrony which can not maintain temporal relationships among packets may occur due to a random transit delay. There exist two types of synchronization schemes ; for guaranteed or non-guaranteed resource networks. The former which applies a resource reservation technique maintains delay characteristics, however, the latter supply a best-effort service. In this paper, I propose a intra-media synchronization scheme to transmit continuous media on general networks not guaranteeing a bounded delay tome. The scheme controls transmission times of the packets by estimating next delay time with the delay distribution. So, the arriving packets may be maintained within a limited delay boundary, and playout will be performed after buffering to smoothen small delay variations. The continually increasing delay due to network overload causes buffer underflow at the receiver. To solve it, the transmitter is required to speed up instantaneously. Too much increase of transmission-rate may cause network congestion. At that time, the transmitter drops the current packet when informed excessive delay from the receiver.

  • An accurate pedestrian-delay model is essential for the pedestrian-oriented evaluation of signalized intersection (SI). The crossing behaviors of pedestrians at signalized pedestrian crosswalks (SPCs) are various, and their arrival behaviors consist of two types, random and platoon. It is natural, hence, that the behaviors of pedestrian crossing and arrival should be considered in order to estimate accurate pedestrian delay. Despite this necessity, a simple pedestrian-delay model that cannot explain these behaviors of pedestrian movements is still recommended in Highway Capacity Manual (HCM). For these reasons, a pedestrian-delay model, suitable for various SPCs and SIs, is required to make pedestrian-oriented decisions on the design and operation of various SPCs and SIs. This paper proposes a novel pedestrian-delay model that is based on the behaviors of pedestrian crossing and arrival. The proposed model consists of two sub models: the one for SPC and the other for SI. The SPC delay model was developed based on the behaviors of pedestrian crossing during pedestrian green time. The SI delay model was designed based on the behaviors of pedestrian crossing and platoon arrival. The results of a numerical simulation showed that the proposed delay model can successfully overcome the under- and overestimation problems of the HCM model with explaining various behaviors of pedestrian crossing and arrival.

  • In smart grid, privacy implications to individuals and their families are an important issue because of the fine-grained usage data collection. Wireless communications are utilized by many utility companies to obtain information. Network coding is exploited in smart grids, to enhance network performance in terms of throughput, delay, robustness, and energy consumption. However, random linear network coding introduces a new challenge for privacy preserving due to the encoding of data and updating of coefficients in forwarder nodes. We propose a distributed privacy preserving scheme for random linear network coding in smart grid that considers the converged flows character of the smart grid and exploits a homomorphic encryption function to decrease the complexities in the forwarder node. It offers a data confidentiality privacy preserving feature, which can efficiently thwart traffic analysis. The data of the packet is encrypted and the tag of the packet is encrypted by a homomorphic encryption function. The forwarder node random linearly codes the encrypted data and directly processes the cryptotext tags based on the homomorphism feature. Extensive security analysis and performance evaluations demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed scheme.

  • In this paper, effect of imperfect power control on performance of a pseudonoise (PN) code tracking loop is analyzed and simulated for a direct-sequence/code-division multiple access (DS/CDMA) system. The multipath fading channel is modeled as a two-ray Rayleigh fading model. Power control error is modeled as a log-normally distributed random variable. The tracking performance of DLL (delay-locked-loop) is evaluated in terms of tracking jitter and mean-time-to-lose-lock (MTLL). From the simulation results, it is shown that the PN tracking performance is very sensitive to the power control error.

  • In this paper, an interchannel interference (ICI) and symbol error probability for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) on the two-ray fading environment are obtained analytically. From the analysis results, it is found that the ICI is a Gaussian random variable and its variance depends on the subchannel location, normalized time delay, and the number of subchannels. In addition, the OFDM signal without guard interveal is found to yield an irreducible error even at high signal to noise ratio due to the ICI.

  • In the IS-95 packet service system, the radio channels are generally classified into the dedicated and common traffic channels. In this paper, the performance of the common traffic channel access method is evaluated using simulation. The simulation results are compared with those of random access method. Simulation results show that the capacity can be increased up to 25% by applying the proposed common channel access method. The delay problem and variance of BER are also discussed.

  • Transposon Tn5 was used to induce random insertional mutations in Bradyrhizobium japonicum, a soybean endosymbiont. By genomic Southern blot analysis, transposition events were found to have occurred randomly throughout the B. japonicum genome. After screening 3, 626 mutants by auxotrophy test, a histidine auxotroph was isolated. Upon plant infection test, the His mutant showed a 3~4 day delay in nodule formation.

  • In field bus network, field device are connected with a medium. Because a medium must be shared for transmitting data, there are random delay time when data arrive destination station. It is difficult that all data packets are guaranteed synchronization and real-time restriction. In this paper, we show an algorithm that makes network utilization to maximum, guarantees real-time restriction, calculates sampling time at all control loop.
