  • Frequency hopping (FH) is a common characteristic of a wide variety of communication systems. On the other hand, software-defined radio (SDR) is an increasingly utilized technology for implementing modern communication systems. The main challenge when trying to realize an SDR FH system is the frequency tuning time, that is, the higher the hopping rate, the lower the required frequency tuning time. In this paper, significant universal hardware driver tuning options (within GNU Radio software) are investigated to discover the tuning option that gives the minimum frequency tuning time. This paper proposes an improved SDR frequency tuning algorithm for the generation of a target signal (with a given target frequency). The proposed algorithm aims to improve the frequency tuning time without any frequency deviation, thus allowing the realization of modern communication systems with higher FH rates. Moreover, it presents the design and implementation of an original GNU Radio Companion block that utilizes the proposed algorithm. The target SDR platform is that of the Universal Software Radio Peripheral USRP-N210 paired with the RFX2400 daughter board. Our results show that the proposed algorithm achieves higher hopping rates of up to 5,000 hops/second.

  • With the advent of the era of ubiquitous computing, the number of wireless communication devices has been exponentially increasing, which phenomenon requires for the preparation for the upcoming shortage of frequency resource. Recently, in consequence, the concept of Cognitive Radio (CR) was introduced in which the wireless nodes periodically recognize and learn the external conditions of communication including the usage of the frequency spectrum. It is essential to assure sufficient range of frequency to satisfy the users of the increasing wireless network devices. However, since not only the frequency band for wireless communication is finite, but most part of them had already been assigned for the primary users of the wireless network service, it is very difficult to ensure the band of frequency for additional communication service. In this contribution, we analyze and describe the issues of designing and implementation of CR networks.

  • In digital radio broadcasting systems, long delays are incurred in service start time when tuning to a particular frequency because several synchronization steps, such as symbol timing synchronization, frame synchronization, and carrier frequency offset and sampling frequency offset compensation are necessary. Therefore, the operation of the synchronization blocks causes delays ranging from several hundred milliseconds to a few seconds until the start of the radio service after frequency tuning. Furthermore, if spectrum inversed signals are transmitted in digital radio broadcasting systems, the receivers are unable to decode them, even though most receivers can demodulate the spectral inversed signals in analog radio broadcasting systems. Accordingly, fast synchronization techniques and a method for spectral inversion detection are required in digital radio broadcasting systems that are to replace the analog radio systems. This paper presents a joint detection method of frame, integer carrier frequency offset, and spectrum inversion for DRM Plus digital broadcasting systems. The proposed scheme can detect the frame and determine whether the signal is normal or spectral inversed without any carrier frequency offset and sampling frequency offset compensation, enabling fast frame synchronization. The proposed method shows outstanding performance in environments where symbol timing offsets and sampling frequency offsets exist.

  • We describe a single-channel rubidium (Rb) radio-frequency atomic magnetometer (RFAM) as a receiver that takes magnetic signal resonating with Zeeman splitting of the ground state of Rb. We optimize the performance of the RFAM by recording the response signal and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in various parameters and obtain a noise level of 159 $fT{\sqrt{Hz}}$ around 30 kHz. When a resonant radiofrequency magnetic field with a peak amplitude of 8.0 nT is applied, the bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio are about 650 Hz and 88 dB, respectively. It is a good agreement that RFAM using alkali atoms is suitable for receiving signals in the very low frequency (VLF) carrier band, ranging from 3 kHz to 30 kHz. This study shows the new capabilities of the RFAM in communications applications based on magnetic signals with the VLF carrier band. Such communication can be expected to expand the communication space by overcoming obstacles through the high magnetic sensitive RFAM.

  • The small radio frequency tracking radar is a tracking system with a radio frequency sensor that identifies a target through all-weather radio frequency signal processing for a target and searches, detects and tracks the target for the major target. In this paper, we describe the development of a board equipped with TMS320C6678 and XILINX FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), a high-speed multi-core DSP that acquires target information through all-weather radio frequency and identifies a target through real-time signal processing. We propose DSP-FPGA combination architecture for DSP and FPGA selection and signal processing, and also explain the design of SRIO for high-speed data transmission.

The main solutions to efficiently use radio frequency spectrum in Kazakhstan will be described in this paper. There are 'Spectrum Utilization, Spectrum Sharing and Reuse the Spectrum' in which the radio frequency can be propagated in wide range using smalt amount of spectrum, or broadcast several channels via one spectrum sharing. In order to embed these systems in practice it will be better to make modifications consider Government policy and geographical and social requirements.

  • This paper proposes architecture of a cognitive radio engine platform and the allowable frequency channel reasoning method that enables acquisition of the allowable channels for the military tactical network environment. The current military tactical wireless communication system is increasing need to secure a supplementary radio frequency to ensure that multiple wireless networks for different military wireless devices coexist, so that tactical wireless communication between the same or different systems can be operated effectively. This paper presents the allowable frequency channel reasoning method based on cognitive radio engine for realizing DSA(Dynamic Spectrum Access) as an optimal available frequency channel. To this end, a case-based allowable frequency channel reasoning method for cognitive radio devices is proposed through modeling of primary user's traffic status and calculation of channel occupancy probability. Also through the simulation of the performance analysis, changing rate of collision probability between the primary users' occupancy channel and the available channel acquisition information that can be used by the cognitive radio device was analysed.
