  • This study defines non-precipitation information as areas with weak precipitation or cloud particles that radar cannot detect due to weak returned signals, and suggests methods for its utilization in data assimilation. Previous studies have demonstrated that assimilating radar data from precipitation echoes can produce precipitation in model analysis and improve subsequent precipitation forecast. However, this study also recognizes the non-precipitation information as valuable observation and seeks to assimilate it to suppress spurious precipitation in the model analysis and forecast. To incorporate non-precipitation information into data assimilation, we propose observation operators that convert radar non-precipitation information into hydrometeor mixing ratios and relative humidity for the Weather Research and Forecasting Data Assimilation system (WRFDA). We also suggest a preprocessing method for radar non-precipitation information. A single-observation experiment indicates that assimilating non-precipitation information fosters an environment conducive to inhibiting convection by lowering temperature and humidity. Subsequently, we investigate the impact of assimilating non-precipitation information to a real case on July 23, 2013, by performing a subsequent 9-hour forecast. The experiment that assimilates radar non-precipitation information improves the model's precipitation forecasts by showing an increase in the Fractional Skill Score (FSS) and a decrease in the False Alarm Ratio (FAR) compared to experiments in which do not assimilate non-precipitation information.

  • In this paper we suggested the chirp stitching algorithm and transmitter/receiver channel to a spaceborne high resolution SAR which enables wideband signal generation and processing with minimum hardware requirement. The transmitter channel generates two sub-band signals and then generate a wideband signal using chirp stitching algorithm and the receiver channel divides a wideband signal into two sub-band signals in order to overcome the high speed data handling capability of this spaceborne systems. We generated and processed a 100 MHz wideband signal evaluated the performance and verified the feasibility of the application of this chirp stitching algorithm and transmitter/receiver channel to spaceborne high resoultion SAR.

  • To improve the separation performance of time-frequency overlapped radar and communication signals from a single channel, this paper proposes an effective separation method based on an improved empirical wavelet transform (EWT) that introduces a fast boundary detection mechanism. The fast boundary detection mechanism can be regarded as a process of searching, difference optimization, and continuity detection of the important local minima in the Fourier spectrum that enables determination of the sub-band boundary and thus allows multiple signal components to be distinguished. An orthogonal empirical wavelet filter bank that was designed for signal adaptive reconstruction is then used to separate the input time-frequency overlapped signals. The experimental results show that if two source components are completely overlapped within the time domain and the spectrum overlap ratio is less than 60%, the average separation performance is improved by approximately 32.3% when compared with the classic EWT; the proposed method also improves the suitability for multiple frequency shift keying (MFSK) and reduces the algorithm complexity.

  • Accurate suppressive jamming is a prominent problem faced by radar equipment. It is difficult to solve signal detection problems for extremely low signal to noise ratios using traditional signal processing methods. In this study, a joint sensing dictionary based compressed sensing and adaptive iterative optimization algorithm is proposed to counter suppressive jamming in information domain. Prior information of the linear frequency modulation (LFM) and suppressive jamming signals are fully used by constructing a joint sensing dictionary. The jamming sensing dictionary is further adaptively optimized to perfectly match actual jamming signals. Finally, through the precise reconstruction of the jamming signal, high detection precision of the original LFM signal is realized. The construction of sensing dictionary adopts the Pei type fast fractional Fourier decomposition method, which serves as an efficient basis for the LFM signal. The proposed adaptive iterative optimization algorithm can solve grid mismatch problems brought on by undetermined signals and quickly achieve higher detection precision. The simulation results clearly show the effectiveness of the method.

  • In this paper, for the microwave level meter based on the FM-CW radar, we analyze the spectrum correlation of beat signals and propose a measurement algorithm using the theory. For industrial applications, level meters must have high precision, which requires a good linearity of VCO. But, in practice, it is very complicated or very expensive to make VCO linear enough to be acceptable in the industrial field. We propose a measurement algorithm using the fact that there exists a peak in the spectrum correlation of beat signals when range difference is sufficiently small. This makes it possible to determine the range difference in a precise manner even using a practical VCO. We present some experimental results to show the validity of this algorithm.

  • Recently, several studies were conducted on the micro-Doppler(MD) phenomenon to identify a warhead from decoys. Both, the warhead and decoy, can be modeled as various shapes and maneuver with their own micro-motion. Their MD phenomenon can be demonstrated by amplitude modulation and phase modulation. Most studies have utilized approximate solutions to express the amplitude modulation regardless of various warhead and decoy shapes. However, the exact solution of the amplitude modulation is required for more effective warhead identification. In this study, we proposed a new modeling method of receiving radar signals from warheads and decoys based on physical optics. The proposed solution was evaluated using an electromagnetic prediction technique and computer-aided design models.

  • The surveillance radar for naval ships is an essential equipment of a battle system that executes the detection and tracking of targets, and the shooting support function; it calculates the three-dimensional track of the target range, azimuth, and altitude to carry out its duty. The surveillance radar consists of an antenna, a transceiver, a processing unit, and an air dryer section. The radar radiates the transmission signal on the antenna section, receives the reflected signal from the target, and amplifies the signals on the transceiver section. The signal received from the antenna is used to provide the operator with target information in various ways. This study identified the display problems when the information about the target is displayed through the radar. The causes of the problems were analyzed and improved. The tracking disappearance phenomenon caused by the altered-course of the ship was improved on the TWS tracking algorithm. The validity of the improved TWS tracking algorithm was confirmed by the normal condition of the target status on the B-scope.

  • This paper describes some major schemes for developing timing signal generator which can be used for testing of 3D radars. The developed generator has a function not only to simulate information on elevation angle for the simulated target signals but also to generate a modulated signal up to 80MHz. Because this generator has an internal modulating function instead of an external modulating function and has sufficient memory enough to change the parameters according to operating programs, it realization of various test-environments for testing a radar can be made with easy and with low expense.

  • The problem for parameters estimation of the received signals impinging on array sensors has long been of great research interest in a great variety of applications, such as radar, sonar, and land mobile communications systems. Conventional subspace-based algorithms, such as MUSIC and ESPRIT, require an extensive computation of inverse matrix and eigen-decomposition. In this paper, we propose a new parameters estimation algorithm via nonlinear minimization, which is simplified computationally and estimates signal parameters simultaneously.

  • This paper presents a novel apnea detection and respiration rate estimation method using impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar. The proposed method utilizes amplitude, time of arrival, and power in the selected band. The experimental results show that respiration rate can be estimated accurately using proposed method. And, it is shown that the selectivity between apnea and respiration can be improved more than 50 dB using the proposed method.
