Discussion for the Effectiveness of Radar Data through Distributed Storm Runoff Modeling (분포형 홍수유출 모델링을 통한 레이더 강우자료의 효과분석)

  • This study is to evaluate the use of dual-polarization radar data for storm runoff modeling in Namgang dam (2,293 $km^2$) watershed using KIMSTORM (Grid-based KIneMatic wave STOrm Runoff Model). The Bisl dual-polarization radar data for 3 typhoons (Khanun, Bolaven, Sanba) and 1 heavy rain event in 2012 were obtained from Han River Flood Control Office. Even the radar data were overall less than the ground data in areal average, the spatio-temporal pattern between the two data was good showing the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and bias with 0.97 and 0.84 respectively. For the case of heavy rain, the radar data caught the rain passing through the ground stations. The KIMSTORM was set to $500{\times}500$ m resolution and a total of 21,372 cells (156 rows${\times}$137 columns) for the watershed. Using 28 ground rainfall data, the model was calibrated using discharge data at 5 stations with $R^2$, Nash and Sutcliffe Model Efficiency (ME) and Volume Conservation Index (VCI) with 0.85, 0.78 and 1.09 respectively. The calibration results by radar rainfall showed $R^2$, ME and VCI were 0.85, 0.79, and 1.04 respectively. The VCI by radar data was enhanced by 5 %.

A Study on the Measurement and the Analysis of Radar Cross Section of the Scaled Aircraft Model (축소형 항공기 모델의 레이다 단면적 분석 및 측정에 대한 연구)

  • This study is a study on the analysis and measurement of the radar cross-sectional area of a miniature aircraft. Radar cross-sectional area for miniature aircraft in advance were analyzed using an electromagnetic analysis tool, and an actual miniature aircraft was manufactured and measured in an anechoic chamber. When measuring, the old model was used as reference data for RCS(radar cross section) characteristics and applied to the test result data of the actual reduced model. The measurement method improved the accuracy of the measurement by applying time gating to remove the influence on the components scattered inside the anechoic chamber. The RCS test results of the reduced model showed relatively high RCS characteristics in the microwave band, as the previous analysis results. In the future, we plan to utilize the method of RCS analysis and measurement for the target of the radar in the VHF(Very High Frequency)/UHF(Ultra High Frequency) band with a relatively large wavelength.

  • The system performance of naval multi function radar is affected by radar beam operation. Multi f function radar has to operate complicated beam better than search radar and tracking radar which have single operation. This paper describes fabricating analysis tool for the verification method for system performance of naval multi function radar. We composed the model that naval ship with MFR and radar which are detecting targets to verification the system performance. The targets are composed anti-aircraft and anti-ship. We integrate each model and make naval MFR simulator that applied resource management of track beam and search beam. We verify analysis tool by simulation in operating scenario after adjusting system parameter to analysis tool.

Drone Detection with Chirp-Pulse Radar Based on Target Fluctuation Models

  • This paper presents a pulse radar system to detect drones based on a target fluctuation model, specifically the Swerling target model. Because drones are small atypical objects and are mainly composed of non-conducting materials, their radar cross-section value is low and fluctuating. Therefore, determining the target fluctuation model and applying a proper integration method are important. The proposed system is herein experimentally verified and the results are discussed. A prototype design of the pulse radar system is based on radar equations. It adopts three different pulse modes and a coherent pulse integration to ensure a high signal-to-noise ratio. Outdoor measurements are performed with a prototype radar system to detect Doppler frequencies from both the drone frame and blades. The results indicate that the drone frame and blades are detected within an instrumental maximum range. Additionally, the results show that the drone's frame and blades are close to the Swerling 3 and 4 target models, respectively. By the analysis of the Swerling target models, proper integration methods for detecting drones are verified and can thus contribute to increasing in detectability.

Study on Flood Prediction System Based on Radar Rainfall Data (레이더 강우자료에 의한 홍수 예보 시스템 연구)

  • The use of radar rainfall for hydrological appraisal has been a challenge due to the limitations in raw data generation followed by the complex analysis needed to come up with precise data interpretation. In this study, RAIDOM (RAdar Image DigitalizatiOn Method) has been developed to convert synthetic radar CAPPI(Constant Altitude Plan Position Indicator) image data from Korea Meteorological Administration into digital format in order to come up with a more practical and useful radar image data. RAIDOM was used to examine a severe local rainstorm that occurred in July 2006 as well as two other separate events that caused heavy floods on both upper and mid parts of the HanRiver basin. A distributed model was developed based on the available radar rainfall data. The Flood Hydrograph simulation has been found consistent with actual values. The results show the potentials of RAIDOM and the distributed model as tools for flood prediction. Furthermore, these findings are expected to extend the usefulness of radar rainfall data in hydrological appraisal.

Runoff Analysis Using Dual Polarization RADAR and Distributed Model (이중편파 레이더강우와 분포형 모형을 이용한 유출해석)

  • In this study, average rainfall of basin was estimated and compared with that obtained from Biseulsan dual polarization RADAR. And the runoffs are estimated using Vflo distribution model for Habcheon reservoir basin and Huicheon basin. In the rainfall estimation using dual polarization RADAR, the rainfall was estimated by using the specific phase difference and differential reflectivity of dual polarization RADAR variables. As a result, for all events rainfall estimation using dual polarization RADAR has the closest value to the gauge rainfall in terms of the peak rainfall and total rainfall. Also, runoff simulation results from dual polarization RADAR show the better results. It is concluded that the method using dual polarization radar can improve the accuracy more than a single polarization radar using only horizontal reflectivity.

  • The fighter pilot uses radar mounted on the fighter to obtain high-resolution SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images for a specific area of distance, and then the pilot visually classifies targets within the image. However, the target configuration captured in the SAR image is relatively small in size, and distortion of that type occurs depending on the depression angle, making it difficult for pilot to classify the type of target. Also, being present with various types of clutters, there should be errors in target classification and pilots should be even worse if tasks such as navigation and situational awareness are carried out simultaneously. In this paper, the concept of operation and functional structure of radar system for fighter jets were presented to transfer the SAR image target classification task of fighter pilots to radar system, and the method of target classification with high accuracy was studied using the CNN ensemble model to archive higher classification accuracy than single CNN model.

A Suggestion for Data Assimilation Method of Hydrometeor Types Estimated from the Polarimetric Radar Observation

  • It is important for 0-6 hour nowcasting to provide for a high-quality initial condition in a meso-scale atmospheric model by a data assimilation of several observation data. The polarimetric radar data is expected to be assimilated into the forecast model, because the radar has a possibility of measurements of the types, the shapes, and the size distributions of hydrometeors. In this paper, an impact on rainfall prediction of the data assimilation of hydrometeor types (i.e. raindrop, graupel, snowflake, etc.) is evaluated. The observed information of hydrometeor types is estimated using the fuzzy logic algorism. As an implementation, the cloud-resolving nonhydrostatic atmospheric model, CReSS, which has detail microphysical processes, is employed as a forecast model. The local ensemble transform Kalman filter, LETKF, is used as a data assimilation method, which uses an ensemble of short-term forecasts to estimate the flowdependent background error covariance required in data assimilation. A heavy rainfall event occurred in Okinawa in 2008 is chosen as an application. As a result, the rainfall prediction accuracy in the assimilation case of both hydrometeor types and the Doppler velocity and the radar echo is improved by a comparison of the no assimilation case. The effects on rainfall prediction of the assimilation of hydrometeor types appear in longer prediction lead time compared with the effects of the assimilation of radar echo only.

The Relative Height Error Analysis of Digital Elevation Model on South Korea to Determine the TargetVertical Accuracy of CAS500-4 (농림위성의 목표 수직기하 정확도 결정을 위한 남한 지역 수치표고모델 상대 오차 분석)

  • Forest and agricultural land are very important factors in the environmental ecosystem and securing food resources. Forest and agricultural land should be monitored regularly. CAS500-4 data are expected to be effectively used as a supplement of monitoring forest and agricultural land. Prior to the launch of the CAS500-4, the relative canopy height error analysis of the digital elevation model on South Korea was performed to determine the vertical target accuracy. Especially, by considering area of interest of the CAS500-4 (mountainous or agricultural area), it is conducted that vertical error analysis according to the slope and canopy. For Gongju, Jeju, and Samcheok, the average root mean squared differences were calculated compared to the drone LiDAR digitalsurface models, which were filmed in autumn and winter and the 5 m digital elevation model from the National Geographic Information Institute. As a result, the Shuttle radar topography mission digital elevation model showed a root mean squared differences of about 8.35, 8.19, and 7.49 m, respectively, while the Copernicus digital elevation model showed a root mean squared differences of about 5.65, 6.73, and 7.39 m, respectively. In addition, the root mean squared difference of shuttle radar topography mission digital elevation model and the Copernicus digital elevation model according to the slope angle were estimated on South Korea compared to the 5 m digital elevation model from the National Geographic Information Institute. At the slope angle of between 0° to 5°, root mean squared differences of the Shuttle radar topography mission digital elevation model and the Copernicus digital elevation model showed 3.62 and 2.52 m, respectively. On the other hands root mean squared differences of the Shuttle radar topography mission digital elevation model and the Copernicus digital elevation model respectively showed about 10.16 and 11.62 m at the slope angle of 35° or higher.

An Improved Semi-Empirical Model for Radar Backscattering from Rough Sea Surfaces at X-Band

  • We propose an improved semi-empirical scattering model for X-band radar backscattering from rough sea surfaces. This new model has a wider validity range of wind speeds than does the existing semi-empirical sea spectrum (SESS) model. First, we retrieved the small-roughness parameters from the sea surfaces, which were numerically generated using the Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum and measurement datasets for various wind speeds. Then, we computed the backscattering coefficients of the small-roughness surfaces for various wind speeds using the integral equation method model. Finally, the large-roughness characteristics were taken into account by integrating the small-roughness backscattering coefficients multiplying them with the surface slope probability density function for all possible surface slopes. The new model includes a wind speed range below 3.46 m/s, which was not covered by the existing SESS model. The accuracy of the new model was verified with two measurement datasets for various wind speeds from 0.5 m/s to 14 m/s.
