  • In this paper, we propose the miniaturization size of wearable Range of Motion(ROM) and a system that can be connected with smart devices in real-time to measure the joint movement range dynamically. Currently, the ROM of the joint is directly measured by a person using a goniometer. Conventional methods are different depending on the measurement method and location of the measurement person, which makes it difficult to measure consistently and may cause errors. Also, it is impossible to measure the ROM of joints in real-life situations. Therefore, the wearable sensor is attached to the joint to be measured to develop a miniaturize size ROM device that can measure the range of motion of the joint in real-time. The sensor measured the resistance value changed according to the movement of the joint using a load cell. Also, the sensed analog values were converted to digital values using an Analog to Digital Converter(ADC). The converted amount can be transmitted wireless to the smart device through the wearable sensor node. As a result, the developed device can be measured more consistently than the measurement using the goniometer, communication with IoT-based smart devices, and wearable enables dynamic observation. The developed wearable sensor node will be able to monitor the dynamic state of rehabilitation patients in real-time and improve the rapid change of treatment method and customized treatment.

  • The square-based multiplication using look-up table simplifies the process and speeds-up the operating speed. However, the look-up table size increases exponentially as bit size increases. Recently, Wey and Shieh introduced a noble design of square generator circuit using a folding approach for high-speed performance applications. The design uses the ones complement values of ROM addresses to fold the huge look-up ROM table repeatedly such that a much smaller table can be sufficient to store the squares. We present new folding techniques that do not require a ones complement part, one of three major parts in the Wey and Shiehs method. Also the proposed techniques reduce the bit size of partial sums such that the hardware implementation be simplified and the performance be enhanced.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of hand acupuncture therapy on pain, ROM, ADL, and depression among older people with low back pain and knee joint pain. Methods: The research was a quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent control group pre-post test. The participants were 40 patients, 18 in the experimental group and 22 in the control group. A pretest and 2 posttest were conducted to measure the main variables. For the experimental group, hand acupuncture therapy, consisting of hand acupuncture and press-pellets based on corresponding points, was given. Results: There were statistically significant differences in pain, ROM in knee joint, and ADL in the experimental group but not in depression compared to the control group over two different times. Conclusion: The hand acupuncture therapy was effective for low back pain, knee joint pain, ROM in knee joint and ADL among the elders in this study. Therefore, the hand acupuncture therapy can be utilized in the field of geriatric nursing as a nursing intervention for older people with low back pain and knee joint pain.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of the drop height on lower extremity and lower back kinematics and kinetics during drop landing with the use of raised heel insole. Furthermore we investigated the change that occurred in our body. Joint ROM, eccentric work and contribution to total work were calculated in 11 male college students performing drop landing with 8 motion analysis cameras and 1 forceplate. The result were as follows. First, the ROM and eccentric work were increased in all joints with the increase of the drop height. Second, the ankle ROM and eccentric work were decreased with the use of the insole. Third, the use of the lower back was increased as the use of the ankle decreased with the insole. Based on these results, we can infer that putting on the insole may contribute to chronic injury. We recommend not to use the insole during physical activity.

  • Major noise source in high speed rotating optical disk drives (CD and DVD-ROM) arises due to the high-speed airflow produced from the upper and lower surfaces on the rotating disk. The present paper deals with the experimental approach how to identify the noise source based on the fundamental principles of aeroacoustics and to propose a reduction method of the noise source. The CD-ROM device is composed of disk, window tray, motors at the bottom place and electronic circuit plate also located below the window plate. The window is cut in the tray to read the disk information using the optical device located below the tray and moving linearly from the center of the disk through the end of the disk. All components are possible noise generators. Experimental studies were carried out in the anechoic room with various design modifications, such as tray geometry, window size and hole location on tray, to identify the major aerodynamic noise source and significant reductions of the aerodynamic noise were obtained.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examined the kinematic relationship and differences through the range of motion (ROM), muscle activity, and vertical ground reaction force (VGRF) during forward and backward lunge movements, which are effective in improving muscle strength and balance ability of the lower extremities, and to provide clinical information on more efficient lunge movements. Design: Cross-sectional study Methods: Fifteen adult males who met the selection criteria were tested for their dominant feet.Forward and backward lunges were then performed, and the ROM, muscle activity, and VGRF were measured for kinematic analysis during the lunge movement. The differences betweenthe forward lunge and backward lunge intervention were examined using a paired t-test. Results: A significant increase in the ROM of the knee and ankle was observed during the forward and backward lunges (p<0.05). In addition, in terms of the muscle activity, the peak values of the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and VGRF also showed a significant increase in the forward lunge compared to the backward lunge (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study showed an increase in VGRF peak value, knee and ankle ROM, and VMO muscle activity during forward lunge. Based on these results, it is considered necessary to apply differently depending on the direction of progress in consideration of the musculoskeletal situation and physical ability during the lunge movement.

  • In this paper, we propose a new weaving trajectory algorithm for the arc welding of a articulated manipulator. The algorithm uses the theory of Bezier spline. We make a comparison between the conventional algorithms using Catmull-Rom curve and the new algorithms using Bezier spline. The proposed algorithm has been evaluated based on the MATLAB environment in order to illustrate its good performance. The algorithm has been implemented on to the industrial manipulator of DR6 so as to show its real possibility. Through simulations and real implementations, the proposed algorithm can result in high-speed and flexible weaving trajectory planning and can reduce the processing time because it needs one-half calculation compared to the conventional algorithm using Catmull-Rom curve.

  • In this paper, we implemented a single-chip speech recognizer using the TMS320C2000 DSPs. For this implementation, we had developed very small-sized speaker-dependent recognition engine based on dynamic time warping, which is especially suited for embedded systems where the system resources are severely limited. We carried out some optimizations including speed optimization by programming time-critical functions in assembly language, and code size optimization and effective memory allocation. For the TMS320F2801 DSP which has 12Kbyte SRAM and 32Kbyte flash ROM, the recognizer developed can recognize 10 commands. For the TMS320F2808 DSP which has 36Kbyte SRAM and 128Kbyte flash ROM, it has additional capability of outputting the speech sound corresponding to the recognition result. The speech sounds for response, which are captured when the user trains commands, are encoded using ADPCM and saved on flash ROM. The single-chip recognizer needs few parts except for a DSP itself and an OP amp for amplifying microphone output and anti-aliasing. Therefore, this recognizer may play a similar role to dedicated speech recognition chips.
