  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of early passive range of motion (ROM) exercise on ROM of lower extremities and foot edema in hemiplegic patients after stroke. Methods: The data were collected between August 2009 and April 2010 from 11 patients in the experimental group and 13 in the control group. The passive ROM exercise was performed twice a day for 2 weeks. Results: In the experimental group, ROM of lower extremities (flexion of hip, flexion of knee and ankle) increased significantly compared to that of the control group. There was no significant difference in foot edema between the two groups. Conclusion: The results indicated that the early passive ROM exercise can improve the ROM of lower extremities, but not the foot edema in patients after stroke.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of static stretching and Evjenth-Hamberg stretching the on range of motion (ROM) of the knee joint. The subjects were composed of twenty healthy males without weight-training experience. The ROM of the knee joint was measured by using an En-Knee. Three tests (performed on the 1st week, 4th week, and 8th week) were conducted to examine the change of each variable. Data were analyzed with a $2{\times}3$ analysis of variance (group${\times}$test) for repeated measures on last factor through SPSS 10.0. The data analysis revealed the change in the ROM was dependent on the stretching method. The results were as follows: The ROM was improved in both methods by each time, but the E-HS was more improved than the SS. In conclusion, this study indicated that the E-HS is more efficient than the SS on the ROM of the knee joint.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Evjenth-Hamberg stretching on the active range of motion (ROM) of the hip joint and the pennation angle of the semitendinosus muscle. Eighty healthy adults participated in this study. The active ROM of the hip joint was measured by a goniometer and the pennation angle of the semitendinosus muscle was measured by ultrasonographic imaging (USI). Both ROM and pennation angle were recorded before and after the static stretching and the Evjenth-Hamberg stretching, respectively. Data were analyzed using paired t-lest and independent t-test at p<.05. The results were as follows: 1) The active ROM of the hip joint increased significantly after both stretching interventions compared with the baseline (p<.001). However, the active ROM of the hip joint increased significantly in Evjenth-Hamberg stretching compared with static stretching. 2) The pennation angle decreased significantly after both stretching interventions compared with the baseline (p<.001). However, the pennation angle decreased significantly in Evjenth-Hamberg stretching compared with static stretching. 3) Reliability data showed that there was a high consistency in USl measurements (ICC=.978). Our findings suggest that the Evjenth-Hamberg stretching was more effective than static stretching in increasing the active ROM of the hip joint and decreasing the pennation angle of the semitendinosus muscle.

  • PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of a specific functional shoe in terms of the range of motion (ROM) of ankle and foot joints during walking when compared to a standardized shoe. METHODS: Kinematic ROM data pertaining to ankle, tarsometatarsal, and metatarsophalangeal joints were collected from twenty-six healthy individuals during walking using a ten-camera motion analysis system. Kinematic ROM of each joint in three planes was obtained over ten walking trials consisting of two different shoe conditions. Visual3D motion analysis was finally used to coordinate the kinematic data. All kinematic ROM data were interpolated using a cubic spline algorithm and low-pass filtered with a cutoff frequency of 6 Hz for smoothing. RESULTS: The overall ROM of the ankle joint in the sagittal and coronal planes when wearing the specific functional shoe was significantly decreased in both ankles during walking when compared to wearing a standard shoe (p<.05). Significantly more flexibility was observed when wearing the specific functional shoe in the tarsometatarsal and metatarsophalangeal joints compared to a standard shoe (p<.05). CONCLUSION: Although clinical application of the specific functional shoe has shown clear positive effects on knee and ankle moments, the results of this study provide important background information regarding the kinematic mechanisms of these effects.

  • This study aims to evaluate the quality of CD-ROM databases: Korean MARC on Disc and Korean National Bibliographies on CD-ROM. The five criteria(accuracy, completeness, consistency on the quality of data itself and ease of use, variety of retrieval function on the quality of database services) are used to measure their quality. The purpose of this study was to diagnose the quality of two CD-ROM databases mentioned above and to analyses the measured result of quality comparatively and to find out the problems of them and also to provide possible suggestions for their improvements.

  • In this paper, a DDFS(Direct Digital Frequency Synthesis)chip has been designed focusing on the reduction of ROM size and implemented using FPGA. When calculating the sine value for the input phase value, we used the Taylor series expansion approximation method to reduce the number of addresses of ROM. We also used the piecewise straight line approximation method, ie, the stored value int the ROM is the difference of the sine value and the straight line approximation. Using this method, we could reduce four bits for each ROM data.

  • By the 1990s, Database Online Searching and CD-ROM Searching have been used universally in libraries. Due to their ease of use and facilitation, it is believed that such new media searching will produce more benefits than the usual printed materials. Furthermore, from the library management's point view, the new media searching's ability to minimize holding space will be another example of the advantage. The new media searching will have ever the printed materials. However, since it Is necessary to have an objective appraisal of the cost effectiveness in the implementation and the design of the new media system, it will be compared the new media searching with the conventional searching by using printed materials at the KIEP Library and Data Bank.

  • This paper presents the development of a ROM writer for shmoo test of a flash memory integrated into the MCU(Micro Controller Unit). A shmoo test is a graphical display of the response of a component or system varying over a range of conditions and inputs. Often used to represent the results of the testing of complex electronic systems such as computers or integrated circuits such as DRAMs, ASICs or microprocessors. A shmoo test and data write time(32k) of the development ROM writer is 6.4 seconds, which was improved by about 20% compared to the rate of the currently used ROM writer.

  • This paper presents a validation of the accuracy of a reduced order model(ROM) and the efficiency of the design optimization using a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition(POD) to transonic wing/fuselage system. Three dimensional Euler equations are solved to extrude snapshot data of the full order aerodynamic analysis, and then a set of POD basis vectors reproducing the behavior of flow around the wing/fuselage system is calculated from these snapshots. In this study, reduced order model constructed through this procedure is applied to several validation cases, and then it is confirmed that the ROM has the capability of the prediction of flow field in the space of interest. Additionally, after the design optimization of the wing/fuselage system with the ROM is performed, results of the ROM are compared with results of the design optimization using response surface model(RSM). From these, it can be confirmed that the design optimization with the ROM is more efficient than RSM.

  • In this study of children's story comprehension, 157 first grade students were randomly selected from 2 elementary schools. Based on their test scores on standardized reading comprehension test, 36 children in the upper and in the lower 25th percentiles were assigned to either a high or a low reading group. Children of both groups read the same story presented either by CD-ROM or by printed-book. Story comprehension was measured by retelling the story and by questions on comprehension. Data were analyzed by 2-way ANOVA. Results showed significantly higher comprehension scores in CD-Rom compared with the printed-book group. The difference in comprehension scores between the CD-ROM and the printed-book groups was greater than in the low reading group compared with the high reading group.
