  • This study was carried out to obtain the biological fundamental data for the resources annexation of Crassostrea ariakensis in terms of the effect of temperature and salinity on growth. Water temperature during the sampling period was $3.5\sim26.2^{\circ}C$ and there was a little difference between each sites. Salinity was ranged from 2.6 to 29.5 psu, its maximum in Baealdo and its minimum in Dontak. The fatness index was the higher in Dontak than the other sites. In August, the value was the lowest in 3 sites. Therefore Crassostrea ariakensis is likely to have spawning period June and July. Size values $(mean{\pm}S.D.)$ of shell height was $149.7{\pm}19.8\;mm$ (Baealdo), $148.6{\pm}21.3\;mm$ (Seomjin bridge) and $143.1{\pm}17.6\;mm$ (Dontak), respectively. Relative growth equations among SH, SL, SW, TW and MW of Crassostrea ariakensis were ranged from 0.024 to 0.0471.

  • CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) of the advanced composite materials as structural materials for vehicle, has a wide application in light-weigh structural materials of airplanes, ships and automobiles because of high strength and stiffness, However, there is a design variable to be considered in practical application of the laminate composite materials, these materials are vulnerable to transverse impact. This paper is to study the effects of stacking sequence and curvature on the penetration characteristics of composite laminate shell. They are stacked to $[0_3/90_3]S,\;[90_3/0_3]s\;and\;[0_2/90_3/0]s,\;[90_2/0_3/90]s$ and their interlaminar number two and four. They are manufactured to various curvature radius (R=100, 150, 200mm and $\infty$), When the specimen is subjected to transverse impact by a steel ball, the velocity of the steel ball was measured both before and after impact by determing the time for it to pass two ballistics-screen sensors located a known distance apart. The critical penetration energy of specimen A and B with less interfaces were a little higher than those of C and D. As the curvature increases, the critical penetration energy increases linearly because the resistance to the in-plane deformation as well as bending deformation increases, which need higher critical penetration energy. The specimen A and C have higher critical penetration energy than B and D because of different stacking sequences. We examined crack length through a penetration test. For the specimen A with 2interfaces, the longest circumferential direction crack length were observed on the first interface from the impact point. For the specimen B 4-interface, the longest circumferential direction crack length were observed on the second interface from the impact point.

  • A small body size of Brown Tsaiya laying duck is desirable to reduce maintenance requirements, so the body weight at 40 weeks of age (BW40) has to be maintained at its current level. Egg weight has to be maintained at around 65 g to meet market requirements. Eggshell strength at 40 weeks of age (ES40) must to be increased in order to maintain a low incidence of broken eggs. Thus, number of eggs laid up to 52 weeks of age (EN52) has to be increased without negative correlated response on ES40. A new linear genetic selection index was used: $I_g=a_0{\times}GEW40\;(g)+a_1{\times}GBW40\;(g)+a_2{\times}GES40\;(kg/cm^2)+a_3{\times}GEN52\;(eggs)$ where GEW40, GBW40, GES40 and GEN52 were the multitrait best linear unbiased prediction (MT-BLUP) animal model predictors of the breeding values respectively of egg weight and body weight at 40 weeks of age (EW40, BW40), ES40 and EN52. The coefficients $a_0$, $a_1$, $a_2$ and $a_3$ were calculated with constraints of 0.0 g, 0.0 g and $0.013kg/cm^2$ for expected genetic gains in EW40, BW40 and ES40 respectively and maximum gain in EN52. Since 1997, the drakes and the ducks were selected according to their own indexes, with this new genetic selection index. From G0 to G4, the average per generation predicted genetic responses in female duck were +0.05 g for EW40, +0.92 g for BW40, $+0.035kg/cm^2$ for ES40 and +2.13 eggs for EN52. Which represented respectively 0.07%, 0.06%, 0.67% and 1.0% of the means of the EW40, BW40, ES40 and EN52. For ES40 and EN52, it represented also respectively 16.1% and 21.6% of the additive genetic standard deviation of these traits. Thevse results indicated that selection of laying Brown Tsaiya by a restricted genetic selection index and with MT-BLUP animal model could be an efficient tool for improving the efficiency of egg production, increasing egg shell strength and egg number while holding egg weight and body weight constants.

  • Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of plant phytase (Phytazyme$^{(R)}$) in corn-soybean meal based diets on utilization of phytase-bound phosphorus in laying hens and evaluate nitrogen(N) digestibility and phosphorus(P) availability in breeders. In the experiment one, three levels of the Phytazyme$^{(R)}$(0.05, 0.1, and 0.2% of diet) were added to diets containing a half of control TCP level(0.96%) for 4 wks. Feed consumption, egg production rate, egg weight and eggshell quality were recorded weekly. At the end of experiment, 8 birds per treatment were sacrificed, liver weight were weighed and right tibiae were removed for determination of P content. The second experiment was conducted to evaluate the P availability and nitrogen digestibility in breeders fed same diets for 2 wks. Feed and excreta were collected to determine the P and N contents for the last three days of experiment two. Addition of Phytazyme$^{(R)}$ resulted in no effects on feed intake, egg product rate, egg weight and egg shell quality. P excretion decreased and its availability enhanced as phytase supplementation increased in diets. Dietary supplementation of Phytazyme$^{(R)}$ above 0.1% level in corn-soybean meal based diets did not have an adverse effect on production and decreased level of phosphorus in excreta.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of medicinal plant by-products on productivity and egg quality in laying hens. A total of five hundred sixty laying hens was randomly distributed into 7 treatments with 4 replicates of 20 birds per replicate and fed com-soy based experimental diets containing 1.5% and 3.0% by-products of Cordyceps militaris, Artemisia capillaris and Curcuma aromatica S., respectively for 12 weeks. Egg production was not significantly different among treatments. Haugh unit was significantly increased in all treatments compared to control(p<0.05). There was no difference among the treatments in egg shell breaking strength, shell thickness, and yolk color. In conclusion, three medicinal by-products used in this experiment did not affect feed intake, egg production and showed positive effect on Haugh unit when they used $1.5{\sim}3.0%$ of feed.

  • The carbon microspheres of a core-shell type were grown by the method of mixed-source hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE). The surface and the cross section of the carbon microsphere grown by a new method were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The characteristics of the carbon microsphere were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and a high resolution-transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM). From these measurements, the diameters of carbon sphere were about few hundred micrometers. Furthermore, we show that the carbon microsphere of the core-shell type by mixed-source HVPE method can be grown successfully with the larger size than those of the existing one. This mixed-source HVPE method is proposed a new method for making of carbon microsphere.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the ffeding value of dried fly larva (DFL), and the effects of dietary DFL on the performance of laying hens. Ninety laying hens of 43 weeks of age(ISA brown) were randomly allotted to 5dietary treatments (0, 2, 5, 10 and $15\%$ DFL), and fed one of the experimental diets for 8 weeks. The formulae of 5 experimental diets were modified to contain $18.8\%$ CP and 2,900 ME kcal/kg. There were 3 replicates per treatment, and 6 brids Per replicate. No significant difference was found in egg Production among dietary treatments. The egg weight was increased (p<0.05) in DFL treatments compared to the control. Also, the egg shell breaking strength was increased(p<0.05) in DFL treatments by $14\%$ compared to the control. The saturated fatty acid content in egg yolk was decreased by $16\%$, and that of unsaturated fatty acid increased by $7\%$ in DFL treatments. Therefore, it could be suggested that DFL supplementation could improve the egg Qualify by increasing the egg weight, egg shell strength, and unsaturated fatty acid content in egg yolk.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) on the performance, immune response and small intestinal microflora in laying hens. A total of 960 Hy-Line $Brown^{(R)}$ laying hens of 27 wks old, housed in 2 bird cages, were assigned in a completely randomized block design into one of the following 6 dietary treatments: control, antibiotic (6 ppm avilamycine), 0.025% MOS, 0.05% MOS, 0.25% FOS, and 0.5% FOS. Each treatment had 4 replicates of 40 birds and was fed ad libitum for 6 wks under 16 h lighting regimen. There were significant differences among treatments in hen-day and hen-housed egg production. Hen-day egg production in 0.025% MOS was significantly higher than that of control. Hen-housed egg production in antibiotic-treated group was significantly higher compared with control. Egg weight, feed intake and feed conversion were not significantly different among treatments. Egg shell thickness was highest in 0.25% FOS, but was not significantly different among the rest of treatments. There were no significant differences among treatments in egg shell strength, egg shell color, egg yolk color and Haugh unit. IgG concentrations in serum were not significantly different among treatments. On the other hand, IgA concentrations of the treated birds tended to be increased compared with control. Dietary treatments tended to decrease Cl. perfringens and E. coli, and to increase Lactobacillus spp. The result of this experiment showed that dietary supplementation of MOS and FOS in laying hens tended to improve egg production comparable to the supplementation of antibiotics. The level of serum IgA and small intestinal microflora were also significantly affected by the treatments.

  • This study investigated the effects of Fe-soy proteinate (Fe-SP) and magnesium oxide (MgO) dietary supplements on eggshell quality in laying hens. A total of 800 26-wk-old Hy-Line Brown hens were assigned to four dietary treatments: control (C), Fe-SP 100 (100 ppm Fe-soy proteinate), MgO (3 g MgO/kg diet), and Fe-SP 100+MgO. Each treatment had five replicates of 40 hens. The FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared) and XRD (X-ray diffraction) spectra of Fe-soy proteinate were different from those of $FeSO_4$ and soy digest. There were no significant differences among treatments in hen-day egg production, hen-house egg production, broken and soft egg rate, feed intake, or feed conversion. The MgO and Fe-SP 100+MgO treatments showed significantly (p<0.05) higher egg weights than the control group. Eggshell strength and thickness were significantly (p<0.05) higher in the MgO supplemented groups. The lightness and yellowness of the eggshells decreased, and the redness increased significantly in the Fe-SP treated groups. There were no significant differences among treatments in leukocyte level, but hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations were higher with Fe-SP treatments. In conclusion, supplementation with Fe-SP significantly affects eggshell color and hemoglobin concentration, whereas MgO supplementation increases eggshell strength and thickness. Egg weight and egg shell quality can be improved by supplementation of 100 ppm Fe in the form of Fe-SP and 3 g MgO/kg diet.

  • Arched Corrugated Steel Roof (ACSR) is a kind of thin-walled steel shell, composing of arched panels with transverse small corrugations. Four full-scale W666 ACSR samples with 18m and 30m span were tested under full and half span static vertical uniform loads. Displacement, bearing capacities and failure modes of the four samples were measured. The web and bottom flange in ACSR with transverse small corrugations are simplified to anisotropic curved plates, and the equivalent tensile modulus, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio of 18m span ACSR were measured. Two 18 m-span W666 ACSR samples were analyzed with the Finite Element Analysis program ABAQUS. Base on the tests, the limit bearing capacity of ACSR is low, and for half span loading, it is 74-75% compared with the full span loading. When the testing load approached to the limit value, the bottom flange at the sample's bulge place locally buckled first, and then the whole arched roof collapsed suddenly. If the vertical loads apply along the full span, the deformation shape is symmetric, but the overall failure mode is asymmetric. For half span vertical loading, the deformation shape and the overall failure mode of the structure are asymmetric. The ACSR displacement under the vertical loads is large and the structural stiffness is low. There is a little difference between the FEM analysis results and testing data, showing the simplify method of small corrugations in ACSR and the building techniques of FEM models are rational and useful.
