  • This study analyzed news articles about 'Young-Kl' reported by 11 media outlets, identifying news frames and quotation frames. Using a semantic network analysis, this study inspected the quotations frames and measured the frequency of the quotes and sources types. Also, the concentration index of the frames was measured. The results showed that news frames consisted of 10 topics and quotation frames consisted of 14 topics. Although the differences among quotation frames by media as well as by source types were observed, the concentration index of sources such as government, political arena, and business appeared high. Therefore, this study suggested that numerical diversity of news sources would not establish the diversity of news frames.

  • Purpose - This study aimed to examine the behavior surrounding the Initial Public Offering (IPO) event of firms within the same conglomerate and the impact of under-pricing and Return on Equity(ROE) on a firm's abnormal stock returns. Design/methodology - This study collected data from 166 South Korean Chaebols, consisting of 355 firms distributed as 202 listed on Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) and 153 firms listed on Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (KOSDAQ) from 2000 to 2020. The Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and the multiple regression analysis were hired to analyze the data. Findings - First, we found an adverse price reaction of IPO listing in the same chaebol group, and firms with higher under-pricing affect other firms' stock prices more adversely within the conglomerate. Next, we explored a negatively significant relation between ROE and the chaebol firms' stock returns during IPO events. Research implications - The novelty of this study is there are not many empirical studies on the impact of IPO within a conglomerate. So, the findings of this study contribute to the literature for analyzing stock's abnormal returns within a conglomerate.

  • Background: This study aimed to analyze trends in qualitative research within the field of dental hygiene, focusing on papers published in Korean journals from 2000 to 2023. As dental hygienists play a crucial role in preventive oral health, understanding the breadth and depth of qualitative research in this field is essential for advancing practice and education. Methods: This descriptive survey research study analyzed 23 qualitative studies using the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) as a framework. Studies were selected through a comprehensive search of Korean databases. The analysis covered research topics, participant types, methodological approaches, and adherence to COREQ domains, including "Research Team and Reflexivity," "Study Design," and "Analysis and Findings." Results: The analysis revealed that most studies employed a phenomenological methodology (36.4%). Additionally, 87.0% of the studies mentioned Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval and only 8.7% utilized qualitative data analysis software. The studies primarily focused on oral care for the elderly, communication, and the experiences of dental hygienists. Furthermore, 95.7% of the studies included participant quotations, but only 56.5% checked data saturation. Conclusion: This study highlights the need for a more diverse methodological approach in dental hygiene research. Journals should also emphasize strict adherence to IRB guidelines and encourage the use of qualitative data analysis software to enhance the rigor of research. By strengthening the systematic foundation of qualitative research in dental hygiene, the field can better address clinical challenges and expand the understanding of dental hygienists' work environments.

  • In Origin of the German Mourning Play(1928), the critic Waltre Benjamin strongly criticized the German Romantic concept of the symbol, according to which the universal and ideal can be represented wholly in the particular and empirical by virtue of an ontological connection between them. Yet this criticism did not prevent Benjamin, in his epistemological preface to the book, from availing himself of the same monadological model (derived from Leibniz and Goethe) on which the Romantics had relied. Although he specifically rejected their insistence on the fusion of the phenomenal and the ideal in the symbol, his own theory of Ideas and their presentation in criticism nonetheless requires just such a fusion. This is not immediately apparent for two reasons: first, Benjamin proposes, in contrast to Platonic and Romantic theory, that Ideas themselves are subject to historical change, and therefore not capable of manifesting themselves fully in any given historical phenomenon; and second, he proposes that Ideas rather than phenomena are monads, individually representing the whole of the world in which they participate. The task of the critic, which Benjamin calls Darstellung("presentation"), consists in revealing Ideas by reducing historical phenomena to their constituent elements and reassembling those elements in what amounts to a mosaic of quotations. But this task is possible only if the critic has a preconception of the Idea he is trying to reveal-a possibility that Benjamin′s theory of knowledge does not allow for at all- or if he can discern the Ideas in the individual phenomenal fragments from which he creates his mosaic, in which case phenomena and Ideas must be related monadologically after all. Benjamin seems to admit the latter possibility in a cryptic sentence in the manuscript draft of his preface to the Origin, but he does not do so in the final printed version. Thus he effectively deprived the critic of an epistemological basis for the presentation of Ideas.

  • This study assumes that Korea's offshore outsourcing is used for diverse purposes such as designing, the supply of raw and subsidiary materials, production, and manufacturing. The purpose for production exists in the beginning stages of development, because it would have grown in scope since the 1990s when offshore outsourcing began in earnest. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 24 firms with an annual production capacity of more than 200,000 pieces among clothing brands for the domestic market, clothing exporters, and promotion agencies. The interviews took place from December 18, 2008 to January 30, 2009. The interviewees were limited to the officers who had the authority to select manufacturers and decide on production volumes. Responses from the in-depth interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. The study results are summarized as follows: First, Korean clothing companies were found to rely on offshore outsourcing (China, North Korea, Vietnam, and Indonesia). Second, offshore outsourcing focused on the purposes for production; however, even fabrics were often outsourced in the case of production in China. Third, the interviewed firms mentioned cost savings, production cost reduction, and labor cost reduction most frequently as the main reasons for offshore outsourcing. Fourth, customs duties were considered most important in offshore outsourcing. Finally, when deciding on foreign manufacturers for offshore outsourcing, the surveyed clothing companies were found to: select manufacturers after market research in their outsourced countries, maintain existing contracts, or consider design capabilities and price quotations of candidate manufacturers.

  • Readership of online newspapers has grown with the proliferation of smart devices. However, fierce competition between Internet newspaper companies has resulted in a large increase in the number of hoax articles. Hoax articles are those where the title does not convey the content of the main story, and this gives readers the wrong information about the contents. We note that the hoax articles have certain characteristics, such as unnecessary celebrity quotations, mismatch in the title and content, or incomplete sentences. Based on these, we extract and validate features to identify hoax articles. We build a large-scale training dataset by analyzing text keywords in replies to articles and thus extracted five effective features. We evaluate the performance of the support vector machine classifier on the extracted features, and a 92% accuracy is observed in our validation set. In addition, we also present a selective bigram model to measure the consistency between the title and content, which can be effectively used to analyze short texts in general.

  • Classified Emergency Materia Medica is a pharmacopoeia published by the government of the Song(宋) dynasty. After publishment, it had a decisive effect on East-Asian herbology of China, Korean & Japan. Sakae Miki(三木榮), Tameto Okanisi(岡西爲人) wrote papers on the subjects of type, publishing process, bibliographic terms of Classified Emergency Materia Medica published in the early and middle years of Joseon Dynasty. Moreover, Sakae Miki claimed that Classified Emergency Materia Medica from China had been a standard of herbology of Joseon Dynasty since its publishment, and herbology based on materia medica from countryside(鄕藥) also had occupied a part of herbology in Joseon Dynasty. Nevertheless the specific influences, from Classified Emergency Materia Medica to the medical books of Joseon Dynasty which established the herbology based on materia medica from countryside has never been handled so far. So I would like to investigate the influence of Classified Emergency Materia Medica to Joseon Dynasty, through a comparison with literature review. The main literatures for comparison are two representative medical books of Joseon Dynasty, Compendium of Prescriptions from the Countryside(1433) & Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine(1613), especially focusing on the pharmacognostic parts. The main comparing points on researching literatures will be the following: publication year of books; order of herbs; and quotations. This paper will show which edition of Classified Emergency Materia Medica was utilized to publish two medical books of Joseon Dynasty, and the process how Korean herbology based on materia medica from countryside was transformed after accepting Chinese herbology.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine and better understand student's perception of territory in the deterritorialized world. Students' sketch maps were analyzed to investigate the way of which they recognized the form of national territory, border, geographic location, and neighboring countries. In addition, students' values, attitudes, and affection for their homeland and other countries were observed through the awareness of North Korea, DMZ, and Dok-do island. Scrutinizing students' sketch maps and follow-up interviews provided much more in-depth context for understanding students' narratives about territorial identity than did the analysis of structured surveys since they can freely draw and sketch their cognition. A qualitative data analysis builded a code list with 67 codes generated from 626 quotations. These data were exported to CSV format to elicit and evaluate differential variances of territorial identity along with student's Social Studies score and Grade Point Average for inferential statistics and quantitative data analysis using SPSS. Based on the results of data analysis and discussion, some suggestions to build a model of territorial education and to develop teaching and learning materials in the domain of geography education were provided.

Bodongbiyo quoted in Euibangryuchui and Pediatrics in the Early Chosun Dynasty (『의방류취(醫方類聚)』에 인용된 『보동비요(保童秘要)』와 조선전기(朝鮮前期) 소아의학(小兒醫學))

  • Bodongbiyo is an old medical book, which can be traced by its texts quoted in the pediatric part of Euibangryuchui. A notable fact is that its record does not remain in China, and relevant records are found only in Korea. The book is believed to have been widely used until the early Chosun Dynasty. The present study purposed to examine how records on Bodongbiyo have been handed down until today and to answer questions on the author of the book through investigating the quoted texts. In addition, we tried to get a glimpse of early pediatrics remaining in the book. From this study were drawn conclusions as follows. A. The oldest record about Bodongbiyo is found in the history of King Taejong in Joseonwangjosilrok, and its contents remain in the form of quotations in Hyangyakjipseongbang and Euibangryuchui. The fact that there are several records on Bodongbiyo, which cannot be traced in Chinese literature, means that the categories of medicine were so extensive in those days. Moreover, this proves the existence of pediatrics as a special medical area in the early Chosun Dynasty. B. Bodongbiyo is known to have been written by Yoo Wan-so, but there are some questions and, in fact, its contents including the theory of fever are contradictory to Yoo Wan-so's medical theory. A number of books that have been published recently in China under the title Bodongbiyo contain the original commentaries of Euibangryuchui and the contents of Yoo Wan-so's other books. They are likely to throw confusion into future researches. C. Bodongbiyo is believed to have been read widely in the Koryo Dynasty and the early Chosun Dynasty. Through examining its texts, we found that the book takes a different course from Soayakjeungjikgyeol. This provides a lead to the understanding of pediatrics in the early Chosun as well as to further research on pediatrics in the mid Chosun Dynasty represented by Dongeuibogam.

  • Jejung Sinpyeon (New Edition of Medical Prescriptions) is a medical book that was compiled in order to overcome the shortcomings of Donguibogam (Exemplar of Korean Medicine), to improve and offer prescriptions suitable for new diseases according to the changing times, and simply to publish new medical books. As a result of an analysis of Yakseongga of Jejung Sinpyeon (a book of medicine written by Kang Myeong-gil in 1799, the 23rd year of the reign of King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty), it was found that a total of 303 lines had been quoted from Wan-bing-hui-chun of the Ming Dynasty of China] and Dongeui Susebowon and that 83 lines had been newly inserted by the author. Of the 303 lines, 296 were quoted from Dongeui Susebowon, and only seven from Wan-bing-hui-chun. This means that the author of Jejung Sinpyeon chiefly used Dongeui Susebowon as the source of Yakseongga quoted therein. 275 lines, or 76%, of a total of 386 lines of Yakseongga of Jejung Sinpyeon, have their Korean names marked. Medicinal herbs marked as Chinese herbs number 83 out of 386. Among the 83 herbs named, one belongs to the part newly inserted by the author, while the remaining 82 are quoted from Yakseongga. The foregoing suggests that the author expected that the knowledge could be used by people easily based on an effort to make it localized knowledge, although Yakseongga was compiled based on quotations from Chinese literature. Yakseongga of Jejung Sinpyeon has significant value as the country's first State-compiled book of medicine to contain Yakseongga.
