In this talk, I will introduce two topics. The first topic is the polymer light emitting diodes (PLEDs) using graphene oxide quantum dots as emissive center. More specifically, the energy transfer mechanism as well as the origin of white electroluminescence in the PLED were investigated. The second topic is the facile synthesis of eco-friendly III-V colloidal quantum dots and their application to light emitting diodes. Polymer (organic) light emitting diodes (PLEDs) using quantum dots (QDs) as emissive materials have received much attention as promising components for next-generation displays. Despite their outstanding properties, toxic and hazardous nature of QDs is a serious impediment to their use in future eco-friendly opto-electronic device applications. Owing to the desires to develop new types of nanomaterial without health and environmental effects but with strong opto-electrical properties similar to QDs, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have attracted great interest as promising luminophores. However, the origin of electroluminescence (EL) from GQDs incorporated PLEDs is unclear. Herein, we synthesized graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) using a modified hydrothermal deoxidization method and characterized the PLED performance using GOQDs blended poly(N-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) as emissive layer. Simple device structure was used to reveal the origin of EL by excluding the contribution of and contamination from other layers. The energy transfer and interaction between the PVK host and GOQDs guest were investigated using steady-state PL, time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experiments revealed that white EL emission from the PLED originated from the hybridized GOQD-PVK complex emission with the contributions from the individual GOQDs and PVK emissions. (Sci Rep., 5, 11032, 2015). New III-V colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized using the hot-injection method and the QD-light emitting diodes (QLEDs) using these CQDs as emissive layer were demonstrated for the first time. The band gaps of the III-V CQDs were varied by varying the metal fraction and by particle size control. The X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) results show that the crystal states of the III-V CQDs consist of multi-phase states; multi-peak photoluminescence (PL) resulted from these multi-phase states. Inverted structured QLED shows green EL emission and a maximum luminance of ~45 cd/m2. This result shows that III-V CQDs can be a good substitute for conventional cadmium-containing CQDs in various opto-electronic applications, e.g., eco-friendly displays. (Un-published results).
We have theoretically investigated steady-state carrier transport and current self-oscillation in negative-effective-mass (NEM) p$\^$+/pp$\^$+/diodes. The current self-oscillation here is a result of the formation and traveling of electric field domains in the p base having a NEM. The dependence of self-oscillating frequency on the applied dc voltage is obtained by detailed numerical simulations. In the calculations, we have considered the scatterings by carrier-impurity, carrier-acoustic phonon, carrier-polar-phonon, and carrier-nonpolar-phonon-hole interactions . This kind of NEM oscillator allows us to reach a current oscillation with terahertz frequency, thus it may be used as a broadband source of terahertz radiation.

Using ab initio density functional calculations, we investigate the structural and electronic properties of porous schwarzite structures formed by $sp^2$ carbon minimal surfaces with negative Gaussian curvature. We calculate the equilibrium geometries, elastic properties and electronic structure of two systems with cubic unit cells containing 152 and 200 carbon atoms, which are metallic and very rigid. The porous schwarzite structure can be efficiently doped by electron donors as well as accepors, making it a promising candidate for the next generation of alkali ion batteries. Furthermore, the schwarzite structures can be magnetic when doped and thus act as arrays of interconnected quantum spin dots. We also propose that two interpenetrating schwarzite structures be used as a ultimate super-capacitor.
Golden-rule like formulas have been used without theoretical basis to calculate the resonance lifetimes and final state distributions in the predissociation of van der Waals molecules. Here we present their theoretical basis by extending Fano's configuration interaction theory. Such extensions were independently done by Farnonux [Phys. Rev. 1985, 25, 287] but his work, unfortunately, was not well known outside some small group of people in the field of Auger spectroscopy. Since my extension is easier to understand than his, it is presented here. Theoretical basis of Golden rule like formulas used in the predissociation of van der Waals molecules was obtained by using such extensions. Factors responsible for several aspects of predissociation dynamics, such as variations of dynamics as functions of resonance lifetimes, or variations in shapes of final quantum state distributions of photofragments around resonances, were identified. Parameters, or dynamical information that could be obtained from the measurement of partial cross section spectra were accordingly determined. The theory was applied to the vibrational predissociation of triatomic van der Waals molecules and its result was compared with those calculated by close-coupling method. An example where Golden-rule like expression fails and branching ratios vary greatly around a resonance was considered.
The lanthanide complexes have been anticipated to exhibit high efficiency along with a narrow emission spectrum. Photoluminescence for the lanthanide complex is characterized by a high efficiency since both singlet and triplet excitons are involve d in the luminescence process. However, the maximum external electroluminescence quantum efficiencies have exhibited values around 1% due to triplet-triplet annihilation at high current. Here, we proposed a new energy transfer mechanism to overcome triplet-triplet annihilation by the Eu complex doped into phosphorescent materials with triplet levels that were higher than singlet levels of the Eu complex. In order to show the feasibility of the proposed energy transfer mechanism and to obtain the optimal ligands and host material, we have calculated the effect depending on ligands as a factor that controls emission intensity in lanthanide complexes. The calculation shows that triplet state as well as singlet state of anion ligand affects on absorption efficiency indirectly.
Field-domain dynamics and current self-oscillations are theoretically studied in quantum-well (QW) negative-effective-mass (NEM) $p^{+}pp^{+}$ diodes when the electric field is applied along the direction of the well. The origin of current self-oscillations is the formation and traveling of electric-field domains in the p-base. We have accurately considered the scattering contributions from carrier-impurity, carrier-acoustic phonon, and carrier-optic phonon. It's indicated that, both the applied bias and the doping concentration largely influence the current patterns and self-oscillating frequencies, which lie in the THz range for the NEM $p^{+}pp^{+}$ diode with a submicrometer p-base. The complicated field-domain dynamics is presented with the applied bias as the controlling parameter.
Nuclear thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes have been developed to comprehensively model nuclear reactor systems to evaluate the safety of a nuclear reactor system. For analyzing complex systems with finite computational resources, system codes usually solve simplified fluid equations for coarsely discretized control volumes with one-dimensional assumptions and replace source terms in the governing equations with constitutive relations. Wall boiling heat transfer models are regarded as essential models in nuclear safety evaluation among many constitutive relations. The wall boiling heat transfer models of two widely used nuclear system codes, RELAP5 and TRACE, are analyzed in this study. It is first described how wall heat transfer models are composed in the two codes. By utilizing the same method described in Part 1 paper, heat fluxes from the two codes are compared under the same thermal-hydraulic conditions. The significant factors for the differences are identified as well as at which conditions the non-negligible difference occurs. Steady-state simulations with both codes are also conducted to confirm how the difference in wall heat transfer models impacts the simulation results.
We systematically investigated the effects of InAs coverage variation, two-step annealing and an asymmetric InGaAs quantum well (QW) on the structural and optical characteristics of InAs quantum dots (QDs) by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence (PL) measurement. The transition of size distribution of InAs QDs from bimodal to multi-modal was noticeably observed with increasing InAs coverage. By means of two-step annealing, it is found that significant narrowing of the luminescence linewidth (from 132 to 31 meV) from the InAs QDs occurs together with about 150 meV blueshift, compared to as-grown InAs QDs. Finally, the InAs QDs emitting at longer wavelength of $1.3\;{\mu}m$ with narrow linewidth were grown by an asymmetric InGaAs QW. The excited-state transition for the InAs QDs with an asymmetric InGaAs QW was not noticeably observed due to the large energy-level spacing between the ground states and the first excited states. The InAs QDs with an asymmetric InGaAs QW will be promising for the device applications such as $1.3\;{\mu}m$ optical-fiber communication.
