  • This Paper introduces new approach to develop fast and reliable gaits for quadruped robot using GA(genetic algorithm). Planning gaits for legged robots is a challenging task that requires optimizing parameters in a highly irregular and multidimensional space. Recent approaches have problems to select proper parameters which are not known in advance and optimize more than ten to twenty parameters simultaneously. In our approach, the effects of major gait parameters are analysed and used to guide the search more efficiently. The experiments of Sony AIBO ERS-7 in Webots environment indicate that our approach is able to produce much improved results in fast velocity and reliability.

  • In this paper a new turning gait is proposed for a quadruped walking robot. The proposed scheme makes it possible to control the translation and orientation of the walking robot simultaneously. At first the feasible leg sequences which can guarantee a positive longitudinal gait stability margin for each direction of movement are found. A method for finding the lifting time of each leg of a feasible leg sequince and selecting an optimal gait among feasible gaits is then suggested. The proposed gait can be appled to control the posture of walking robots and to generate an optimal gait for a desired movement of translation and rotation of the walking robot systematically.

  • This paper analyzes the standing balance of four-legged robots which are useful for delivering objects or investigating of information. For this, we specify an effective model of general four-legged robots and propose a boundary condition based on the standing stability of the four-legged walking. To verify such a standing balance, we consider some exemplary free motions at the standing mode of the robot and discuss on the robot's balance margin. The analysis specified in this paper will be applicable for effective balancing control of various quadruped robotic walking.

  • Unmanned patrol robots are currently being developed for autonomous data survey in construction sites. As the amount of data acquired by robots increases, it is important to utilize proper metadata and system to manage data flow. In this study, we developed three materials, metadata design, robot system and web system, in the purpose of automating construction site data survey using unmanned patrol robots. The metadata was mainly designed to represent when and where raw data was acquired. To identify the location of data acquired, localization data from SLAM algorithm was converted to suit the construction drawings. The robot system and web system were developed to generate, store and parse the raw data and metadata automatically. The materials developed in this study was adopted to Boston Dynamics SPOT, a quadruped robot. Autonomous data survey of 360-picture and environment sensor was tested in two construction sites and the robot worked as intended. As a further study, development on the autonomous data survey to improve the convenience and productivity will be continued.

  • Robot system development consists of several sub-tasks such as layout design, motion planing, and sensor programming etc. In general, on-line programming and debugging for such tasks demands burdensome time and labor costs, which motivates an off-line graphic simulation system. MSRS(Microsoft Robotics Studio) released in recent years is an appropriate tool for the graphic simulation system since it supports CCR(Concurrency and Coordination Runtime), DSS(Decentralized System Services), and dynamics simulation based on PhysX and graphic animation as well. In this paper, we developed an MSRS based network simulation system for quadruped walking robots, which controls virtual 3D graphic robots existing in remote side through internet.

  • This paper is concerned with locomotion of dog-like quadruped robots that can adapt to various terrains, mainly dealing with implementation methods and characteristics of static and dynamic gaits. To this end, a 12-DOF robot is built in house, motional trajectories of its body and feet are generated mimicking biological life, and the corresponding leg joint angles are analytically obtained by inverse kinematics. Such joint angle data are then applied to the robot's ADAMS model for computer simulations so that the planned walk and trot gaits are both confirmed dynamically stable. However, contrary to the simulation results, previous trot patterns showed unstable behavior during experiments. This problem led us to analyze the reason, and in the course we discovered the importance of maximally utilizing the concept of WSM rather than ZMP and therefore reducing the gait period to secure the stability of dynamic gaits such as trot.

  • This paper presents a systematic method of the zigzag gait planning for quadruped walking robots. When a robot walks with a zigzag gait, its body is allowed to move from side to side, while the body movement is restricted along a moving direction in conventional continuous gaits. The zigzag movement of the body is effective to improve the gait stability margin. To plan a zigzag gait in a systematic way, the relationship between the center of gravity(COG) and the stability margin is firstly investigated. Then, new geometrical method is introduced to plan a sequence of the body movement which guarantees a maximum stability margin as well as monotonicity along a moving direction. Finally, an optimal swing-leg sequence is chosen for a given arbitrary configuration of the robot. To verify the proposed method, computer simulations have been performed for both cases of a periodic gait and a non-periodic gait.

  • The Interest in robotics has been steadily increasing in recent times both in Korea as well as abroad. Research on robots for new and diverse fields is ongoing. This study discusses the current research and development on robot actuator, which are used to control the joints of robots, and focuses on developing more efficient technology for joint control, as compared with the current technologies. It also aims to find means to apply the abovementioned technology to diverse industrial fields. We found that easy and effective control of actuators could be achieved by using ZigBee sensor networks, which were widely being used on wireless communications. Throughout the experiments it is proved that the developed wireless actuator could be used for easy control of various robot joints. This technology can be effectively applied to develop two-legged robots that will be able to walk like human, or even quadruped and hexapod robots. It can also be applied to motors used in industry. In this study, we develop an extremely minimized ZigBee sensor network module that can be used to control various servo motors with low power consumption even if it is long distances. We realized effective wireless control by optimizing the ZigBee antenna, and were able to quickly check the status of relevant Tree node through mutual communication between the servo motors composing the ZigBee sensor network and the main server control modules. The developed Servo Motor with ZigBee sensor network modules can be applied in both robotics as well as for home or factory automation.

  • The walking mobility with stability of 4 legged robots is the distinguished skills for many application areas. Planning gaits of efficient walking for quadruped robots is an important and challenging task. Especially, autonomous generation of locomotion is required to manage various robot models and environments. In this paper, we propose an adaptive locomotion control of 4 legged robot for irregular terrain using HyperNEAT. Generated locomotion is executed and analysed using ODE based Webots simulation for the 4 legged robot which is built by Bioloid.

  • A variety of studies on imitating the skeletal structure and the gait of legged animals have been done in order to develop walking robots which have an ability to adapt to atypical environments. In this paper, we analyzed the gait of a Bearded dragon lizard using the motion capture system, proposed a calibration scheme of the motion data and generated the trotting gait of a lizard based on the calibrated data. Also, we constructed the dynamic model based on the biometric data of a Bearded dragon lizard and applied the trotting gait of the lizard to the dynamic model. We verified the validity of the gait with the commercial dynamic simulation software.
