This research programme include investigation of the adsorption behavior of heavy metals and VOCs by Pyrolysis char for using landfill cover material. The volatile potions in the sludge gasified during the pyrolysis period and gave birth to porosity throughout the matrix. The result of the ad/desorption experiment of nitrogen to find out the formation of some pore by the gasification of the volatile matter, we can certify that the pyrolysis char($14.56\;m^2/g$) has increased twice more than the organic wasted sludge($6.68\;m^2/g$) in specific surface area. The pyrolysis char has the adsorption characteristic of medium type of Type II and V in BDDT classification, and showed a little micro pore. In the adsorption experiment of ethylbenzene and toluene, as a result of applying the Freundlich adsorption isotherms, the pyrolysis char was higher in the adsorptivity of ethylbenzene and toluene than the granite and the organic wasted sludge. The results of the heavy metal adsorption test for the char indicated that it had some ability of adsorption. It is suggest that pyrolysis char has some advantages for utilizing as landfill covers because the pyrolysis char can adsorb/absorb hazardous substances from the landfill sites and inhibit the ground water and soil contamination.
In this study, char was produced via pyrolysis of sewage sludge and the effects of reaction conditions(temperature, heating rate, reaction time) on characteristics of char were investigated. As temperature increased from $300^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$, the surface area of sludge char increased in general but decreased at $700^{\circ}C$ temporarily. The effect of heating rate on specific surface area and pore volume of char was not large. Meanwhile, specific surface area and pore volume increased with reaction time but average pore diameter decreased.

This paper describes the evaluation of kinetic parameters for pyrolysis and carbon char oxidation of residual oil. The non-isothermal pyrolysis of residual oil was carried out with TGA (Thermo-Gravimetric Analyzer) at heating rate of 2, 5, 10 and $20^{\circ}C/min$ up to $800^{\circ}C$ under N2 atmosphere. The first order and nth order pyrolysis models were used to fit the experimental data, and the nth order model was turned out to follow the experimental data more precisely than the first order model. For carbon char oxidation experiment, TGA and four heating rates used in pyrolysis experiment were also adapted. The kinetic parameters for the residual carbon char particle were obtained with three char oxidation model, that is, volume reaction, grain and random pore model. Among them, the random pore model described the char oxidation behaviour quite well, compared to other two models. The non-linear regression method was used to obtain kinetic parameters for both pyrolysis and carbon char oxidation of residual oil.
The experimental work has been carried out for the study of pyrolysis and char-air reaction of five coals used in Y power station in Korea. For five coals, the characteristics of pyrolyis and char reaction have been investigated with TGA, and their kinetic parameters were obtained and compared each other. The order of pyrolysis rate for five coals were as follows : Peabody, Flame, MIP, Indominco, Elk valley. The behavior of char - air reaction for five coal chars have been successfully described by the grain model. The rate of char-air reaction gave the maximum value for Flame coal char, on the while Elk valley coal char had the minimum value. For the reaction temperature over 1,000K, Flame coal char - air reaction was very fast compared with other coal chars.

The combustion reactivity of char depending on the pyrolysis pressure was investigated with Pressurized Thermogravimetric Analyser. The amounts of volatiles released at pyrolysis pressure of 1, 8 and 15 atm were, first, measured with Alaska, Adaro and Denisovsky coals. Reactivities of chars produced at var-ious pyrolysis pressure were evaluated at atmospheric pressure and 500℃, and analysed in terms of char crystal structure, surface area, pore characteristics and chemical composition of char. Finally, the combustion reactivities of three chars were examined at pressure of 1 atm, 8 atm and 15 atm. From this study, it was recognized that the amount of volatiles released decreases with increase in pyrolysis pressure, and reaction rate of char produced at higher pyrolysis pressure was lower than that at lower pyrolysis pressure. It might be resulted from the difference in char surface area and pore characteristics rather than char crystal structure and chemical characteristics. At 15 atm, kinetic parameters of Alaska char were obtained with the grain model, and these were 56.8 KJ/mole for activation energy and 222.34 (1/min) for frequency factor.
Gasification of biomass produces syngas containing CO, $H_2$ and/or $CH_4$, which can then be converted into energy or value-added fuels. One of key issues for efficient gasification is to minimize tar concentration in the syngas for use in a final conversion device such as gas engine. This study investigated the decomposition of primary tar by catalytic cracking using char as catalyst, of which the feature can be integrated into a fixed bed gasifier design. The pyrolysis vapor containing tar from pyrolysis of wood at $500^{\circ}C$ was passed through a reactor filled with or without char at $800^{\circ}C$ for a residence time of 1, 3 or 5 sec. Then, the condensable vapor (water and tar) and gases were analyzed for the yields and elemental composition. Four types of char particles with different microscopic surface area and pore size distribution: wood, paddy straw, palm kernel shell and activated carbon. The results were analyzed for the mass and carbon yields of tar and the composition of product gases to conclude the effects of char types and residence time.

Rice straw is one of the main renewable energy sources in Korea. Bio-oil is produced from rice straw with a bench-scale equipment mainly with a fluidized bed, a char removal system and zeolite catalyst. It was investigated how the zeolite catalyst affected the production of bio-oil and chemical composition of bio-oil. Compared with non catalytic pyrolysis, the catalytic pyrolysis increased the amount of gas and char but decreased the amount of oil. The water content in bio-oil increased due to deoxygenation. The aromatic compound and heating value was increased when catalytic pyrolysis was applied.u
Fire characteristics can be analyzed more realistically by using more accurate properties related to the fire dynamics and one way to acquire these fire properties is to use one of the inverse property estimation techniques. In this study two optimization algorithms which are frequently applied for the inverse heat transfer problems are selected to demonstrate the procedure of obtaining pyrolysis properties of charring material with relatively simple thermal decomposition. Thermal decomposition is occurred at the surface of the charring material heated by receiving the radiative energy from external heat sources and in this process the heat transfer through the charring material is simplified by an unsteady 1-dimensional problem. The basic genetic algorithm(GA) and repulsive particle swarm optimization(RPSO) algorithm are used to find the eight properties of a charring material; thermal conductivity(virgin, char), specific heat(virgin, char), char density, heat of pyrolysis, pre-exponential factor and activation energy by using the surface temperature and mass loss rate history data which are obtained from the calculated experiments. Results show that the RPSO algorithm has better performance in estimating the eight pyrolysis properties than the basic GA for problems considered in this study.

To investigate the influence of the char layer formed during the combustion process on the pyrolysis of wood combustibles, ISO 5660-1 cone calorimetry experiments and Fire dynamics simulator (FDS) simulations were performed, and the results from these two methods were compared. The wood combustible selected as the fuel for this study, Douglas fir, has been widely used for the production of building materials, furniture, etc. The heat release rate (HRR) measured from the cone calorimetry experiment was in good agreement with the result predicted by the FDS simulation. However, the FDS simulation failed to predict the heat released by the smoldering combustion process, due to the absence of the char surface reaction in the model. The FDS simulation results clearly indicate that the char layer formed on the surface of combustibles produces a thermal barrier which prevents heat transfer to the interior, thickening the thermal depth and thus reducing the pyrolysis rate of combustibles.
Empty fruit bunch (EFB) char was used to remove $NO_x$ and odorous substances. The physicochemical properties of the EFB chars were altered by steam or KOH treatments. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and porosity were measured to determine the properties of the modified EFB chars. The $deNO_x$ and adsorption test for hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde were performed to determine the feasibility of the modified EFB chars. The KOH-treated EFB (KEFB) char revealed higher $deNO_x$ efficiency than with commercial activated carbon. The Cu-impregnated EFB char also had high $deNO_x$ efficiency at temperatures higher than $150^{\circ}C$. The KEFB char showed the highest hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde adsorption ability, followed by the steam-treated EFB char and untreated EFB char. Moreover, the product prepared by sulfonation of EFB char showed excellent performance for esterification of palm fatty acid distillate for biodiesel production.
