  • Leiomyosarcoma is defined as a malignant smooth muscle tumor or a tumor that arises from smooth muscle and it is found as firm. white and lobulated mass. Canine uterine Ieiomyosa- rcomas are rarely associated with clinical signs. We surveyed(one case which was treated at veter- inary medical leaching hospital of Seoul National University. Through this report we studied the meshed fur diagnosis of uterine leiomyosarcoma by symptom, hematological method and ultrahonog- raphy. To determine uterine leiomysarcoma is difficult due to similarity of clinical signs to pyometra. Especially symptoms could not be noticed even by dogs owners until dogs have an elevation of the number of white blood cells. We conclude ultrasonographic observation and experimental laparotomy are of great value to diagnose the uterine liomyosarcoma.

  • A 7-year-old female mixed-breed dog was presented to a veterinary clinic for pyometra. During abdominal ultrasonography, an abnormal finding was noted in the gallbladder. A cholecystectomy was performed. Grossly, the gallbladder wall was thickened with a polypoid nodular projection into the lumen. Microscopically, the polyp consisted of a solid sheet of round to polygonal-shaped cells that formed small packets with fibrovascular septa. The neoplastic cells contained abundant cytoplasmic eosinophilic granules. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive to chromogranin A and neuron-specific enolase, whereas they were negative to vimentin and cytokeratin. This case was diagnosed as a primary gallbladder carcinoid tumor.

  • A 10-year-old spayed female Yorkshire Terrier visited for a physical checkup. The bitch had a history of ovariohysterectomy for treatment of pyometra a year ago. On physical examination, the dog was bright and alert. Complete blood counts, serum biochemistry and blood gas analysis results did not show any deviations within normal ranges. Radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations revealed unilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter of the right kidney and ureter, and obstruction of the distal ureter was observed. On the basis of these results, nephroureterectomy was performed. During the operation, the adhesion of the distal ureter and surrounding tissue cells were observed without the evidence of the ureteral ligation. The distal ureteral obstruction was presumed to be adhesion caused by fibrous tissue formation between ureter and retained broad ligament, or incompletely removed blood clots following ovariohysterectomy. This case report describes the occurrence of hydroureteronephrosis caused by adhesion of the distal ureter following ovariohysterectomy in a bitch.

  • The reproductive disorders are the major causes of reproductive infertility in cows that affect the total annual calf crop, resulting in great economic loss in Bangladesh. The aim of the study was to find out the reproductive disorders (RD) in dairy cows that markedly influences the reproductive performances in aspect of Bangladesh. A total number of 1658 dairy cows were selected according to their body condition score (BCS) in different farms at the southern part of Bangladesh during the period of 2011 to 2012. The preliminary data (basic information) were collected directly from the dairy farmer's record books and asking questions according to a prescribed questionnaires as well as the diagnosis of RD was presumptively confirmed on the basis of history, clinical signs and examination of animals by ultrasonography and others necessary tools. There are thirteen major reproductive disorders were identified. Overall prevalence of reproductive disorders at that area were 23%, among of these anoestrus 5.1%, repeat breeder 3.7%, metritis 4.4%, poor heat detection 1.6%, ovarian cyst 0.36%, retain placenta 4.6%, dystocia 0.97% and pyometra 0.24%. It is indicated that anoestrus and retention of placenta after calving was most hazardous cause of infertility whereas the metritis and repeat breeder were the second line of consequence. RD had shown significantly higher incidence in low BCS (${\leq}2$) than that of fair (2.5) and very good (${\geq}3{\sim}3.5$). In conclusion, the highest RD especially anoestrus and retention of placenta is very alarming for reproductive loss which might be needed further research to identify the specific cause of these disorders for establishment a profitable dairying and dairy population.

  • Cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH) and uterine dilation (hydro-, muco-, hemato- and pyometra) are common uterine diseases in intact female dogs. The aim of the present study was to assess the usefulness of digital abdominal radiography in diagnosing uterine disease in intact female dogs. Two hundred and thirteen intact female dogs were included, and were classified into four groups on the basis of radiographic uterine visibility (visible/invisible) and ultrasonographic findings (normal uterus/abnormal uterine condition including CEH and uterine dilation). For each dog, the ratio of the maximum uterine diameter to the height of the fifth lumbar vertebral body (U/L5 ratio) was calculated on radiographs. There were 78 and 135 dogs in the normal and abnormal groups, respectively; 34.6% normal and 53.5% abnormal uteri were visible on abdominal radiographs. Our results suggested that a mean U/L5 ratio of $1.18{\pm}0.53$ ($mean{\pm}2SD$) indicated a normal radiographic uterus diameter, and that a value of > 1.60 should be used as an indicator of uterine disease in clinical practice. However, because false negative results were noted, radiography cannot replace ultrasonography for assessment of the uterus.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the duration of retained placenta (RP) on postpartum diseases and culling in dairy cows. Data were collected from 456 Holstein cows between 2008 and 2010. RP (${\geq}$ 24 h after parturition) and postpartum diseases were diagnosed by farm managers and a veterinarian according to standardized definitions. The overall incidence rate of RP was 14.0%, and the incidence rate of RP with fourth and higher parity was two times that of cows having offspring for the first time. The duration of RP was 2 to 15 days with a mean of 6.8 days, except for cases of fourth and higher parity which had a mean of 10.5 days. A total of 63% of cows with RP had postpartum diseases. Among the cows diagnosed with RP, 23.4% developed metritis, and of those, 35.3% developed endometritis or pyometra. A total of 25% (n = 16) cows with RP were culled within 60 days in milk (DIM) and of those culled, 75% (n = 12) had postpartum diseases. These results suggest that RP increases the risk of postpartum diseases such as metritis and mastitis and is a culling hazard up to 60 DIM.

  • This study was conducted to determine the microorganisms inhabitating in cow genitalia and their antimicrobial drug susceptibility. During the period between July, 1985 and February, 1986, a total of 111 cow genitalia, 58 from Korean native and 53 from dairy cow, were sampled at three abattoirs. Gross pathological examination and bacterial isolation and identification were performed from the genital samples. In addition antimicrobial drug susceptibility test for the microorganisms isolated, some synergistic activity among drugs were examined on the major organism isolated from the cases of endometritis and pyometra. The results are summerized as follows: 1. Among the bacteria isolated from the genitalia, Staphylococcus spp., C. pyogenes, E. coli, Proteus spp., Streptococcus spp., Bacillus spp. were most frequently isolated whereas the genera of Pasteurella, Pseudomonas, Klebsiella and Yersina were detected far less frequently. 2. In Korean native cow the genera of Straphylococcus and Steptococcus were more isolated than dairy cow while in dairy cow the genera of Corynebacterium, Proteus, Escherichia were more of ten isolated than Korean native cow. 3. From cow genital organs showing lesions of endometritis and prometra, C. pyogenes was most frequently isolated, the isolation rate being 60 percent, and follow by Staphylococcus spp., Proteus spp., E. coli and Pasteurella spp. in the order. 4. Antimicrobial drug susceptibility test conducted on the major organisms isolated showed that all the isolates were susceptible to gentamicin, cephalosporin and sulfisoxazole, but resistant to tetracycline and penicillin. 5. Twenty-nine isolates of C. pyogenes were submitted to the synergistic activity test of cephalosporin, kanamycin and streptomycin with penicillin. Synergists were demonstrated in 90 percent, 31 percent and 27 percent of isolates examined by the combined use of penicillin and cephalosporin, penicillin and kanamycin, penicillin and streptomycin, respectively. About 10 percent of the isolates were found to be indifferent by the synergism test.

  • An 11-year-old, female, Maltese dog was presented with abdominal distension and intermittent slight lameness on left hindlimb. Palpable abdominal pain and purulent vaginal discharge were observed on physical examination. Severe leukopenia with toxic change, and azotemia, hyperphosphatemia, and hyponatremia were identified on blood profile. On radiographs and abdominal sonograms, remarkable soft tissue mass containing echogenic material deviating intestines craniodorsally compatible with pyometra. On stifle radiographs, 4-5 fragmented sesamoid bone (fabella) was identified on both stifle joint with medial patella luxation. Immediate ovariohysterectomy was performed and the patient was recovered well with normal blood work. No specific treatment was attempted to the left hindlimb showing minimal and intermittent lameness. No remarkable abnormal gait was reported for 3-month follow-up period. The fragmented lateral fabella is considered congenital multipartite of lateral fabella not related to the lameness.

  • An infertile, three-year-old primiparous cow was diagnosed preliminarily with pyometra by rectal palpation at 180 days postpartum. Ultrasonography showed that the cranial portion of the right uterine horn was distended with fluid, while the base portion of the horn was missing. A dense band of tissue connected the cranial portion of the uterine horn to the uterine body. However, the left uterine horn was normal. Gross postmortem analysis of the reproductive organs confirmed the ultrasonographic observations. Histopathological observations also showed that dark red-brown mucus filled the thin-walled right uterine horn, where neither caruncles nor uterine glands were observed. Finally, this primiparous Holstein cow was diagnosed with segmental aplasia of the right uterine horn.

  • A 9-years-old female Collie dog was presented with history of abdominal enlargement, anorexia and constipation. On radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations, intra-abdominal mass was identified. On cytologic findings of the mass, no cancer cell was observed. Exploratory laparotomy was performed to diagnose and remove the mass. A large, single, spheroid mass weighing 9.5 kg ($40{\times}25{\times}18$ cm) was located in the middle section of the right uterine horn. Based on the results of histopathological examination, the mass was diagnosed as a cystic endometrial hyperplasia (CEH). This is rare case of severe focal CEH without pyometra in a bitch.
