The use of high-strength steel and concrete in the construction industry has been gaining increasing attention over the past few decades. With it comes the need to utilise high-strength structural bolts to ensure the design load to be transferred safely through joint regions, where the space is limited due to the reduced structural dimensions. However, research on the behaviour of high-strength structural bolts under various loading combinations is still insufficient. Most of the current design specifications concerning high-strength structural bolts were established based on a very limited set of experimental results. Moreover, as experimental programs normally include limited design parameters for investigation, finite element analysis has become one of the effective methods to assist the understanding of the behaviour of structural components. An accurate and simple full-range stress-strain model for high-strength structural bolts under different loading combinations was therefore developed, where the effects of bolt fracture was included. The ultimate strength capacities of various structural bolts obtained from the present experimental program were compared with the existing design provisions. Furthermore, design recommendations concerning the pure shear and tension, as well as combined shear and tension resistance of Grade 10.9 high-strength structural bolts were provided.
The need for establishing the contribution of pultruded FRP encasements and additional FRP wraps around these encasements to the shear strength and load-deflection behavior of reinforced concrete beams is the main motivation of the present study. This paper primarily focuses on the effect of additional wrapping around the composite beam on the flexural and shear behavior of the pultruded GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) beams infilled with reinforced concrete, taking into account different types of failure according to av/H ratio (arch action, shear-tension, shear-compression and pure bending). For this purpose, nine hybrid beams with variable shear span-to-depth ratio (av/H) were tested. Hybrid beams with 500 mm, 1000 mm, and 1500 mm lengths and cross-sections of 150x100 mm and 100x100 mm were tested under three-point and four-point loading. Based on the testing load-displacement relationship, ductility ratio, energy dissipation capacity of the beams were evaluated with comprehensive macro damage analysis on pultruded GFRP profile and GFRP wrapping. The GFRP wraps were established to have a major contribution to the composite beam ductility (90-125%) and strength (40-75%) in all ranges of beam behavior (shear-dominated or dominated by the coupling of shear and flexure). The composite beams with wraps were showns to reach ductilities and strength values of their counterparts with much greater beam depth.
Biodegradable nanocomposites were prepared by mixing a polymer resin and layered silicates by the melt intercalation method. Internal structure of the nanocomposite was characterized by using the small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Nanocomposites having exfoliated and intercalated structures were obtained by employing two different organically modified nanoclays. Rheological properties in shear and extensional flows and biodegradability of nanocomposites were measured. In shear flow, shear thinning behavior and increased storage modulus were observed as the clay loading increased. In extensional flow, strain hardening behavior was observed in well dispersed system. Nanocomposites with the exfoliated structure had better biodegradability than nanocomposites with the intercalated structure or pure polymer.

Dynamic deformation behavior of ultra-fine-grained pure coppers fabricated by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) was investigated in this study. Dynamic torsional tests were conducted on four copper specimens using a torsional Kolsky bar, and then the test data were analyzed by their microstructures and tensile properties. The 1-pass ECAP'ed specimen consisted of fine dislocation cell structures elongated along the ECAP direction, which were changed to very fine, equiaxed subgrains of 300~400 nm in size as the pass number increased. The dynamic torsional test results indicated that maximum shear stress increased with increasing ECAP pass number. Adiabatic shear bands were not found at the gage center of the dynamically deformed torsional specimen of the 1- or 4-pass ECAP'ed specimen, while some weak bands were observed in the 8-pass ECAP'ed specimen. These findings suggested that the grain refinement according to the ECAP was very effective in strengthening of pure coppers, and that ECAP'ed coppers could be used without serious reduction in fracture resistance under dynamic torsional loading as adiabatic shear bands were hardly formed.
Fracture of Al2O3 tubes for different loading path under combined tension/torsion was investigated. Macroscopic directions of crack propagation agreed well with the maximum principal stress criterion, independent of the loading path. However, fracture strength from the proportional loading test($\tau$/$\sigma$= constant) showed either strengthening or weakening compared to that from uniaxial tension, depending on the ratio $\tau$/$\sigma$. The Weibull theory was capable to predict the strengthening of fracture strength in pure torsion, but not the weakening in the proportional loading condition. The strengthening or weakening of fracture strength in the proportional loading condition was explained by the effect of shear stresses in the plane of randomly oriented microdefects. Finally, a new empirical fracture criterion was proposed. This criterion is based on a mixed mode fracture criterion and experimental data for fracture of Al2O3 tubes under combined tension/torsion. The proposed fracture criterion agreed well with experimental data for both macroscopic directions of crack propagation and fracture strengths.

Crack tip displacement is originated by tensile stress component, s and shear stress component, t on pure Mode I and pure Mode II. The crack tip displacement(CTD) depends on combined types of different two stress components under mixed-mode loading conditions (MMLC). Thus, the analysis of crack tip displacement must be CTD vector, dv which is composition of ds and dt under MMLC. In this paper, various effects of MMLC on the crack closure are studied experimentally. The crack closure magnitude is calculated from the information of crack tip displacement under MMLC. This information has been obtained from the high resolution optical microscope in direct observations of crack displacement behavior at the crack tip. Observed crack tip displacement is analyzed by using CTD vector to determine crack opening load. The various effects of MMLC on the crack closure are explained using crack opening ratio with crack length and mode mixture. The effective stress intensity factor considering crack closure is also discussed.
A semi-monocoque truncated cone structure, which is a main structure for the payload adapter of KSLV-I, was designed. Static test was performed to confirm the reliability of the cone structure under the design loads. Strains and displacements are measured during four load cases; the compressive axial, pure bending, pure shear, and combined loading conditions. The results showed that the cone structure satisfies the design requirements. An equivalent axial load was applied to the cone structure so that the global buckling of the cone structure occurred. The measured buckling load was compared with the predicted one by finite element method. The results show a good agreement.

The bonding strength of the interface between the actual bridge concrete deck and overlay was primarily affected by the shear that depended on the flexural behavior than pure tensile, but the field bonding test measured bonding strength by the pure tensile due to simplicity and field applicability. Therefore, the purpose this study was to evaluate the required direct bond strength for bridge deck overlay using Finite element analysis with the many variavles such as bridge deck types, span length, material properties, lanes, and loading types. The commercial program LUSAS was used in analysis. The analysis results were compared to the value of specification currently used in highway construction site.

The effect of a circular hole reinforced by a ring of different material in a plate under biaxial loadings is considered. In this problem, an infinitely large flat is assumed. The reinforcing ring is of uniform rectangular cross-section of same thickness as the plate. The outer boundary of the ring is cemented to the inner boundary of the hole in the plate. The plate is subjected to hydrostatic tension and pure shear loadings. The stress distribution around the hole is obtained by means of the two dimensional theory of elasticity. To conform the validities of above solutions, a series of photo-elastic stress analysis for a composite model was carried out. Fair agreements were observed between two sets of values. The conclusions arrived at are as follows: 1) The theoretical solutions are exact ones for the case of infinitely large flat plate. 2) The solutions can be used for most case of engineering problem if the bonding between the plate and ring is perfect. 3) If the ratio of Young's moduli of the ring and the plate is increased, the stresses in the plate decrease whereas those in the ring increase. 4) The stress concentration near the hole has localized effect. 5) Under hydrostatic tension, maximum principal stress and maximum shear stress increase as the ratio of inner and outer diameters of the ring increases. 6) Under pure shear, the stresses depend upon angular orientations of the points and maximum principal stress and maximum shear stress appear at 45 degree. They increase as the ratio of inner and outer diameters of the ring increases.
The studies are conducted to investigate the fatigue and fracture, behavior of preflex girder. In this work, the fatigue tests using by constant amplitude fatigue loading and 4-point-loading to maintain pure bending condition in the mid-span of preflex girder will be performed. It is expected from the results of the studies to provide the fatigue strength and the S-N curve of preflex girders. In addition, it will be ensured that fracture initiation occurs in the welded part of horseshoe-type shear connector as well as in other welded joints.
