The size of pupil with pupillary light reflex is determined by the amount of a luminance. and it is dependent with the distribution function of the retinal illuminance which is the amount of transmittance for the external light due to the size of pupil, and the detector of cone and rod due to the amount of the luminance. The change of the pupil size with the luminance can be expressed with the mathematical model $$y(x)={\alpha}+{\beta}\frac{1}{1+{e}{x}{p}(x-x_0)/{\theta}}$$ where ${\alpha}$ is the size of the pupil diameter in a maximum value of the luminance, ${\beta}$ is the deviation of the pupil's diameter between maximum and minimum, ${\theta}$ is the parameter showed the degree of a sensitivity. Comparing with the experimental value of P.Moon et al, We known that the equation of the model is very compatible.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of emotional arousal and cognitive load on pupil diameter during a lie detection interview. The guilty group (n = 30) committed a mock crime (i.e., stealing cash) and the innocent group (n = 30) performed a mission (i.e., sending a message) in the research assistant's office. After that, their pupil size was measured using a wearable eye-tracker during the interview. The interview questions were classified with the three cognitive load, three emotional arousal, and three neutral questions. The results indicate that the main effects of group and time were not significant, but the interaction between group and time was significant. It means that when answering cognitive load questions, the guilty group showed larger increase in pupil diameter than the innocent group. The present study suggests that inducing cognitive load is more effective than inducing emotional arousal during an interview when using pupil diameter as an index of deception, and it is expected to improve the accuracy of lie detection.
In ophthalmology, a pupillometer, a device to measure the diameter of the pupil of the eye, can provide information on the function of the autonomic nervous system. The current pupillometers on the market are either too large to be a handheld instrument, or relatively expensive. In this study, a pupillometer based on a smartphone was designed. Both white and infrared LEDs and a 3M pixel camera of a smartphone were applied for the visual stimuli to an eye and for the acquisition of the eye images, respectively. Contrary to the existing method of pupil measurement that usually observe the variation of pupil diameter, the proposed algorithm in this study was applied to calculate the constriction ratio of the pupillary area in response to pupillary light reflex. The results showed that the constriction ratio of the pupillary area were all in the normal range (above 4.0) from the sixteen healthy participants. It is believed that the approach to pupil measurement used in this study is suitable for a mobile interface, and this system can be applied to clinical research, home-use healthcare, and distributed to some areas which suffer from problems like a lack of medical support.
The finite schematic eye based on spherical aberration and Stiles-Crawford effect is designed by an optimization method. It consists of four aspherical surfaces. The radius of curvature, thickness, asphericity, and spherical aberration are used as constraints in the optimization process. Stiles-Crawford effect in the pupil is considered as a weighting value for optimum design. The designed schematic eye has effective focal length of 20.8169 mm, back focal length of 15.4820 mm, front focal length of -13.8528 mm, and image distance of 15.7150 mm. When the pupil diameter is 4 mm, the diameter of entrance pupil and exit pupil are 4.6919 mm and 4.2395 mm, respectively. From the data of 75 measured Korean emmetropic eyes, this finite schematic eye is designed first in Korea.

Videooculography (VOG) is one of the eye-movement measurement methods used for objective evaluation of vestibule -ocular reflex. A key feature of VOG is to estimate accurately the center of pupil and ocular torsion with being less influenced by the upper eyelid droop, eyelashes, corneal reflection, and eye blinks. Especially, it Is important to find the accurate center of the pupil in 3-D VOG because the inaccurate pupil center causes significant errors on measuring torsional eye movement. A new algorithm was proposed to find the center of pupil which is a little influenced by factors mentioned above. In this study, real time three-dimensional VOG which can measure horizontal, vortical, torsional eye movements, and the diameter of pupil was implemented using the proposed method.

We studied on change of lens accommodation and pupil light reflex caused by VDT work in six women and compared them with those of other office works. The results were as follows. 1. In VDT work the accommodation contraction velocity decreased during the first 2-hr VDT task, then recovered markedly by the end of the one-hour lunch break, and decreased again by the end of the 2nd 2-hr VDT task. Changes of relaxation velocity showed similar pattern although it was less typical than that of contraction velocity 2. There was no marked change in accommodation contraction velocity and amplitude of accommodation in general office work and near-distance office work, and in the near-distance office work accommodation relaxation velocity decreased according to work load without recovery after lunch break. 3. Initial pupil diameter, initial pupil area of light reflex decreased significantly during VDT task only in VDT work and didn't recover after lunch break. These results suggest possibility that changes of accommodation contraction velocity, accommodation relaxation velocity, near point distance, and pupil diameter and area are useful in evaluating characteristics of VDT work. For this, more research adjusted individual differences, circadian rhythm, emotional stress needs.

We describe a common optical system that merges a LADAR system, which generates a point cloud, and a more traditional imaging system operating in the LWIR, which generates image data. The optimum diameter of the entrance pupil was determined by analysis of detection ranges of the LADAR sensor, and the result was applied to design a common optical system using LADAR sensors and LWIR sensors; the performance of these sensors was then evaluated. The minimum detectable signal of the $128{\times}128-pixel$ LADAR detector was calculated as 20.5 nW. The detection range of the LADAR optical system was calculated to be 1,000 m, and according to the results, the optimum diameter of the entrance pupil was determined to be 15.7 cm. The modulation transfer function (MTF) in relation to the diffraction limit of the designed common optical system was analyzed and, according to the results, the MTF of the LADAR optical system was 98.8% at the spatial frequency of 5 cycles per millimeter, while that of the LWIR optical system was 92.4% at the spatial frequency of 29 cycles per millimeter. The detection, recognition, and identification distances of the LWIR optical system were determined to be 5.12, 2.82, and 1.96 km, respectively.
By Gaussian optics, a zoom eyepiece is analyzed, which has the diameter of exit pupil 0.5 em, eyerelief 1 em, and angular magnification $M_a=7~15$. The initial design is based on this analysis. Telescope objective which was previously designed has focal length($(f_u')$ 21.0 em, and its clear aperture is 6.2 em. Zoom telescope has half field angle $\beta=1.5^{\circ}$ at the entrance pupil and at exit pupil it is $\beta'=1.5^{\circ}\times(7~15)=10.5^{\circ}~22.5^{\circ}$. Zoom eyepiece consists of three groups, of which each one satisfies the Seidel 3,d order aplanatization. Final design is obtained by optimization for the finite ray aberration, and the zoom eyepiece is assessed on the basis of the resolution of eyes.f eyes.
Purpose: To investigate the effect of corneal unique shape to changes of refractive full corrections when pupil size changes. Methods: Subjective refraction for monocular full correction was performed to 30 subjects ($23.33{\pm}1.78$ of age, 60 eyes) in two room conditions, 760 lx and 2 lx, respectively. Pupillary diameter was measured in two conditions and the change pattern was analyzed using a peak data of corneal topography. Results: Pupillary diameter was 3.74~4.00 mm in 760 lx and 5.52~5.90 mm in 2 lx. By comparison with refractive data in 760 lx, those data in 2 lx was changed as follows: more (-) spherical power of 17 eyes (28.3%), more (+) spherical power of 10 eyes (17.7%), more (-) cylinderical power of 17 eyes (28.8%), less (-) cylinderical power of 9 eyes (15.3%), and astigmatic axis rotation of 36 eyes (62.1%). From peak data of corneal topography, the changing pattern of two principal meridians was classified into 4 types. Conclusions: Expansion of the corneal refractive surface accompanied with pupillary dilation may be a main factor that effects the changing a values of subjective refraction because of unique corneal shape. Therefore, subjective refraction should be performed under the nearest lighting condition to a main living environment.
The aim of this thesis research is to develop equipment measuring refractive state in order to measure the general ocular function using PC-based Foucault Test(Knife Edge Test). The Image of light generated from the reflection of incident light in retina thru Knife Edge Test was photographed using a CCD camera. The resulting image was then analyzed to measure the size of pupil by measuring the diameter of reflected image. The reflection state was judged from the orientation of reflected image and the degree of abnormal reflection was confirmed by measuring the size of second image of reflection. The aberration value was calculated from the magnitude of spherical aberration obtained by comparing the brightness of second reflected image appeared in the opposite direction to the reflected image.
