  • This paper describes preliminary discussions on spatial distribution of NO density, which is mostly contained in simulated NOx exhaust, between a wire-cylinder geometry discharge gaps by using Laser Induced Fluorescence(LIF) Spectroscopy, Spatial distribution of NO density will be measured with varying NO concentrations from 166 to 644 [ppm] and diameters of central electrode from 6 to 10mm. Pulsed Nd:YAG laser. Optical Parametric Oscillator(OPO), and Frequency Doubler are used to excite NO molecules to their excited state.

  • This presentation will describe recent developement in spatially and time resolved optical diagnostics for two kinds of the high pressure microdischarges. The first kind is a nanosecond pulsed discharge with two pin electrodes while the second kind is a microwave split ring resonator developed by Jeff Hopwood. Both spatially and time resolved optical emissions are collected for these two discharges and some interesting phenomena are observed. By using either the Stark broadening or a collisional radiative model for high pressure discharges, the evolution of electron density can be obtained. We will compare these different techniques for obtaining the electron density and discuss their limitations.

  • The electronic ballast for HID lamps needs high ignition voltage which is consisted of high voltage pulse ignitor. However, In the case of street lamp it is far from a lamp to a ballast, the conventional pulsed high voltage ignitor can not turn on the HID lamps because of reduction of ignition voltage. Therefore, it needs to do the research on a resonant ignition to turn on the HID lamps. However, the resonant circuit which is consisted of LC occurs over current, so the capacity of the ignitor increases. The capacity of the ignitor can be reduced by using the transformer. In this case, the capacitor for resonance is installed to the secondary of the transformer, and the capacitor needs high withstanding voltage. Therefore, it needs to do the research on a resonant ignition to reduce the voltage over the resonant capacitor by dividing the secondary of the transformer.

  • This paper proposes a compact pulse generator fur NOx removal application for diesel automotive. The rising time is important factor to increase NOx removal efficiency in pulsed corona discharge method. Manufacturing cost and compactness of the pulse power generator should be satisfied for automotive application. The proposed pulse power uses a low voltage thyristor, a pulse transformer with the function of saturated magnetic switch, and series connected general diodes as opening switch to satisfy that requirements. With 200 resistor load, the experiment results show that the output voltage is 21kV, the rising time is about 21ns, and the pulse width (FWHM) is about 42ns.

  • The discharge processes in electro-negative gases with non-uniform field gape are composed of the formation of pulsed streamer corona, the transition of the streamers into leader step, the temporal development of the leader channel, and the stepped propagation of leader through the gap. In this paper, the first corona inception characteristics in $SF_6$ gas and $SF_{6}-N_{2}$ mixtures, related to the propagation of loader and the space charge effect, were experimentally investigated with positive and negative transient impulse voltages.

  • Design and test results of a VRAG(Vacuum Rotary Arc Gap) switch were presented. To control the damage of electrodes caused by the vacuum arc, Lorentz's force by the radial magnetic field between spiral electrodes was used to rotate the vacuum uc. VRAG switch electrodes were made of the material of CuCr and OFHC. Gap distance between two spiral type electrodes for the rotation of the arc discharge is 8, 10, 12mm. In the cathode, one trigger electrode was inserted into each spiral wing. Normal operation of the VRAG switch was confirmed with 10.6[$mutextrm{s}$]of trigger delay and 2~3[$mutextrm{s}$] of the jitter time. The speed of the vacuum arc was measured to be 0.6 ~ 1[km/s] by a motion analyzer.

  • In order to improve corrosion resistance for cast stainless steel in seawater, the characteristics of corrosion resistance after plasma ion nitriding was investigated. Plasma ion nitriding process was conducted in a mixture of nitrogen of 25% and hydrogen of 75% at substrate temperature ranging from 350 to $500^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours using pulsed-DC glow discharge plasma with working pressure of 250 Pa in vacuum condition. Corrosion tests were carried out for as-received and plasma ion nitrided specimens. The corrosion characteristics were investigated by measurement of weight loss and observation of surface morphology. In anodic polarization experiment, relatively less damage depth and weight loss were presented at a nitrided temperature of $400^{\circ}C$, attributing to the formation of S-phase.

  • An MgO thin film sputtering system for the PDP (Plasma Display Panel) applications has been developed. This system was manufactured with a vertical In-Line type of 42 inch, which has the length of 520 mm and the width of 900 mm. A reactive magnetron discharge for this sputtering was generated using an unipolar pulsed power supply which has functions of constant voltage (Max. 500 V) and current (Max. 15 A) control, frequency of $10{\sim}100$ kHz and duty ratio of $10{\sim}60$ %. The experiment was conducted under various conditions : $3{\sim}10$ mTorr of pressure, the ratio of $O_2$/Ar = $0.1{\sim}0.5$, 50 % of duty and power of $0.5{\sim}1.7$ kW. From the experiment, the deposition rate of a static state and a moving state were measured to be about 45 nm/min and 6 nm m/min at the distance of 50 mm between the target and the substrate, respectively.

  • The ice coats are built on 25 kV overhead contact wire when the temperature is lower than $0^{\circ}C$. It generates shockwaves at the mechanical interface of the collecting strips of the pantograph and the contact wire. The de-icing processes should be performed to avoid shockwaves which are generated by a pulsed high-voltage arc discharge. This paper presents temperature analysis of the de-icing effects which could be applied to the overhead contact wire of railways using Joule heat. The results show that 350 A is the proper current for $0^{\circ}C$ conductor according to environmental condition such as velocity of air stream, ambient temperature and moisture.

  • Laser induced impedance changes in hollow cathode lamps containing sputtered metal atoms have been employed to measure the spectroscopic properties of metal. This technique, known as optogalvanic spectroscopy, has been shown to be a powerful and inexpensive technique for the investigation of atomic and molecular species. Characteristic optogalvanic signals from hollow cathode lamps (HCL) made of different metal species and induced with a pulsed dye laser were observed, and the dependence of the optogalvanic signal on the discharge current and wavelength of laser was measured. Based on the results obtained, the mechanisms involved in evoking the optogalvanic signals were consisted of single-photon absorption, multi-photon absorption, and photoionization. Moreover the current dependence of the optogalvanic signal indicates that the optogalvanic technique could be one of the most sensitive optical methods of detecting atomic species.
