  • In this paper, it is purpose to develop a pulsed $CO_2$ laser with stable output at pulse repetition rate range of 2 kHz. We used a IGBT as a switching device. The laser cavity was fabricated as an axial and water cooled type. It was used a ring blower to increase a cooling effect. The laser performance characteristics as parameters, such as pulse repetition rate, gas pressure have been investigated. The experiment was done under 3 electrode-type instead of 2 electrode-type. To achieve 3 electrode-type, we used two pulse-transformers which is operated parallel. As a result. the maximum output was about 28 W at the total pressure, of 20 Torr(the gas mixture $CO_2$:$N_2$:He=1:9:15 and the pulse repetition rate of 1300 Hz).

  • Background and Objectives Due to changes in diet and lifestyle, the number of obese people worldwide is steadily increasing. Obesity has an adverse effect on a healthy life, so it needs treatment and improvement. Research related to this is continuously being conducted. Materials and Methods The laser system to compact designed using 808 nm laser diode and Neodymium Yttrium orthovanadate generates a 1064 nm wavelength, the periodically polarized nonlinear crystal pumping laser beam. The pulsed 1064 nm wavelength beam passing through the AO Q-switch is used as the pumping light of the nonlinear optical crystal and is irradiated to the periodic polarized nonlinear optical crystal with a quasi-phase matching period. Nonlinear optical crystals use an oven to control the temperature to generate the desired 1980 nm and 2300 nm wavelengths. Results The 1980 nm and 2300 nm wavelengths generated by temperature control of nonlinear optical crystals are effective for lipolysis. A fiber catheter was used so that the laser could be directly irradiated to the fat cells. In particular, the new wavelength (1980 nm, 2300 nm) can increase the fat reduction effect with low energy (1.3 W). When a laser with a combination wavelength of 1980 nm and 2300 nm was used, an average lipolysis effect of 20% was obtained. Conclusion A mid-infrared lipolysis laser system with excellent absorption of fat and water has been developed. We conducted a princlinical study to confirm the efficacy and safety of the lipolysis laser system, and obtained good results for lipolysis with low energy.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the wound healing process after skin incision using scalpel, $CO_2$ laser and pulsed Nd:YAG laser in rats. After skin on the back was incised 3 cm long, rats were sacrificed at 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Macroscopic, histologic and immunohistochemical examinations using the collagen type IV and the CD34 antibodies which are necessary to the forming process of new capillary were performed. Results obtained were as follows ; Macroscopically the initial wound healing of the laser group was about $1{\sim}2$ weeks slower than that of the scalpel group. There weren't however any remarkable differences in all groups in 4 weeks after incision. By histologic finding, acute inflammatory cells were more prominent during the initial wound healing in the scalpel group than in the other groups. Epithelialization started in the order of scalpel, $CO_2$ and Nd:YAG laser group after skin incision. By the Masson's trichrome stain, collagen synthesis in the Nd:YAG laser group was more slowly initiated than in the other groups. But it was completed at the $3{\sim}4$ weeks in all groups. Immunohistochemically, collagen type IV and CD34 expression were markedly increased at 2 weeks in the scalpel and $CO_2$ laser group. Meanwhile, in the Nd:YAG laser group, these reactions were observed later tan the other groups. Collagen type IV and CD34 expression were decreased in all groups after 4 weeks. These results suggest that $CO_2$ and Nd:YAG laser showed similar healing process compared with scalpel and a potential substitute for scalpel in skin incision.

  • Nd and Ti co-doped bismuth ferrite $(Bi_{1-x}Nd_x)(Fe_{1-y}Ti_y)O_3$ (x, y = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) ceramics and thin films were synthesized through the conventional mixed-oxide process and pulsed laser deposition (PLD), respectively. Nd and Ti co-doping effect was examined with emphasis on how these impurities affect phase formation behavior as there could be the improvement in leakage current problems often associated with multiferroic $BiFeO_3$ (BFO) thin films. The lattice constants of BFO ceramics decreased with Nd doping concentration up to 10mol%, while they further decreased with Nd and Ti co-doping to about 20%. BFO thin films obtained by the PLD process revealed random polycrystalline structure. Similar to bulk BFO ceramic, Nd and Ti co-doping effectively suppressed the formation of unwanted secondary phase and thus stabilized the perovskite phase in BFO thin films.

  • The optimization of the cladding parameters was studied to maximize the deposition efficiency in the laser cladding using a low power pulsed Nd:YAG laser. STS304 stainless steel plate and Co alloy powder were used as a substrate and powder for cladding, respectively. The six cladding parameters were selected through preliminary experiments and their effects on the deposition efficiency were analyzed statistically. Experiments were designed and carried out using the Taguchi experimental method using a L18 orthogonal array. It was found from the results of analysis of variance(ANOVA) that the powder feed position and powder feed angle had the most significant effects on the deposition efficiency, but the powder feed rate and laser focal position had nearly no effects. The deposition efficiency could be maximized at 0mm of the powder feed position and 50o of the powder feed angle in the experimental range. From this experimental analysis, a new laser cladding head with 20o of the powder feed angle was designed and manufactured. With a new laser cladding head, the highest deposition efficiency of 12.2% could be obtained.

  • SmCo films were deposited on Si(100) substrate by a Nd-YAG pulsed laser ablation of the targets of Sm$\_$100-x/Co$\_$x/ (73$\leq$x$\leq$93) at the substrate temperature of 600∼700$\^{C}$ and the laser beam energy density of Q switching mode or fixed Q mode. The magnetic properties of the films obtained from the Q switching mode exhibited a 4 $\pi$ Ms of 5200∼7700 Gauss, iHc of 190-250 Oe, and 4$\pi$M$\_$r//4$\pi$M$\_$s/ of 0.4∼0.74, respectively, while the fixed Q mode gave the magnetic properties of corresponding films of a 4$\pi$M$\_$r//4$\pi$M$\_$s/ = 0.32∼0.91 and iHc of 430-6290 Oe, respectively. The fixed Q mode gave the better magnetic properties of the SmCo films which seems to be due to a formation of magnetically hard minor phases in droplet of Sm-rich intermetallics. However, the resultant rough surface of the SmCo films is a problem to be solved by a continued study.

  • With a collimated $CO_2$ laser beam, the bidirectional current switching was realized in a two-terminal electronic device based on a highly resistive vanadium dioxide($VO_2$) thin film. A $VO_2$ thin film was grown on a $Al_2O_3$ substrate by a pulsed laser deposition method. For the fabrication of a two-terminal electronic device, the $VO_2$ thin film was etched by an ion beam-assisted milling method, and the $VO_2$ device, of which $VO_2$ patch width and electrode separation were 50 and $100{\mu}m$, respectively, was fabricated through a photolithographic method. A bias voltage range for stable bidirectional current switching was found by using the current-voltage property of the device measured in a current-controlled mode. The transient responses of bidirectionally switched currents were analyzed when the laser was modulated at a variety of pulse widths and repetition rates. A switching contrast was measured as ~3333, and rising and falling times were measured as ~39 and ~21ms, respectively.

  • The purpose of study was to evaluate the effects of the $CO_2$ laser irradiation on demineralization inhibition and rehardening of human primary tooth enamel by laser fluoresecence measurement. Enamel specimens were made from the human primary teeth. The center spots of the specimens about 2 mm diameter were irradiated by $CO_2$ laser at the conditions of focused continuous or defocused pulsed, 3 or 6 W, for 4 seconds, before or after the demineralization by Coca-Cola for 24 hours at $37^{\circ}C$. The Diagnodent was used to measure the degree of demineralization and rehardening. There was no significant difference between focused continuous and defocused pulsed irradiation. 6W irradiation inhibited the demineralization but 3W did not. 6W irradiation rehardened the demineralized enamel but 3W did partially. The color of enamel was changed to brown to black after 6W irradiation but 3W caused no color change. $CO_2$ laser irradiation showed the effects on demineralization inhibition and rehardening of human priamary tooth enamel, and the laser fluoresecence measurement technique seemed to be a valid evaluation method.

  • Infrared multiphoton decompositions (IRMPD) of $BrCH_2CH_2CH_2CH_2Cl$ were studied by using the pulsed $CO_2$laser. At 0.3 J laser energy the experimentally observed product ratios could be reasonably explained by the RRKM calculation with initial excitation energy of ca. 80 Kcal/mol. The pressure dependence of product yields led us to conclude that the collisional deactivation by the inert gas decreased the yield of low energy dissociation channel more significantly.
