  • This study investigates the influences of different core parameters on the dynamic performances, such as rise time and overshoot, in pulse transformers for the triggering circuit of SCRs. First, a simplified transformer equivalent circuit, which emerges from a standard transformer equivalent circuit, is developed to analyze the step response. Second, the relations between the dynamic performances and the parasitic parameters are calculated by the simplified equivalent circuit. Third, the variations of rise time and overshoot, which are vital to the stability of triggering SCRs, with different core parameters, such as mechanic dimensions and topologies, are comprehensively investigated by analyzing the parasitic parameters. Finally, prototype transformers are fabricated to experimentally validate the analysis. The presented method can practically instruct the design of a pulse transformer for triggering SCRs.

  • A novel dual DC-DC flyback converter with leakage-energy recycling is presented in this paper. Only an active switch is used for this converter. A pulse-width-modulation strategy is adopeted to control this switch. Two transformers are employed for the proposed converter. During the switch ON-period, the primary windings of the two transformers store energies. At the switch OFF-period, the energies stored in the primary windings of the two transformers are released to the output via the secondary windings of the two transformers. Meanwhile, the leakage energies of the two transformers can be recycled. The operating principles and steady-state analyses of the proposed converter are described in detail. A prototype circuit of the proposed converter is implemented for verifying the performances.

  • The high-voltage pulse generator consists of transformers of fundamental wave and harmonic waves, and shunt capacitors. The pulse has the fundamental wave and the harmonic waves that have been as a series circuit by the transformers to make high voltage pulse. This paper shows that pulse generator circuit is analyzed by using transformer equivalent circuits with the effect of load and simulated in time domain using Matlab program. The output voltage of pulse were obtained to 2.5kHz, 2.0kV. In high voltage circuit, capacitors are related to frequency band pass characteristics. Also, it is shown that the voltage of output pulse increases according to the growth of load.

  • Multi-pulse topology of converters using elementary six-pulse GTO - VSC (gate turn off based voltage source converter) operated under fundamental frequency switching (FFS) control is widely adopted in high power rating static synchronous compensators (STATCOM). Practically, a 48-pulse ($6{\times}8$ pulse) configuration is used with the phase angle control algorithm employing proportional and integral (PI) control methodology. These kinds of controllers, for example the ${\pm}80MVAR$ compensator at Inuyama switching station, KEPCO, Japan, employs two stages of magnetics viz. intermediate transformers (as many as VSCs) and a main coupling transformer to minimize harmonics distortion in the line and to achieve a desired operational efficiency. The magnetic circuit needs altogether nine transformers of which eight are phase shifting transformers (PST) used in the intermediate stage, each rating equal to or more than one eighth of the compensator rating, and the other one is the main coupling transformer having a power rating equal to that of the compensator. In this paper, a two-level 48-pulse ${\pm}100MVAR$ STATCOM is proposed where eight, six-pulse GTO-VSC are employed and magnetics is simplified to single-stage using four transformers of which three are PSTs and the other is a normal transformer. Thus, it reduces the magnetics to half of the value needed in the commercially available compensator. By adopting the simple PI-controllers, the model is simulated in a MATLAB environment by SimPowerSystems toolbox for voltage regulation in the transmission system. The simulation results show that the THD levels in line voltage and current are well below the limiting values specified in the IEEE Std 519-1992 for harmonic control in electrical power systems. The controller performance is observed reasonably well during capacitive and inductive modes of operation.

The pulse has the fundamental wave and the harmonic waves that have been increased as a series circuit by the transformers to make high voltage pulse. This paper shows that pulse generator circuit is analyzed using Miller's theorem and network theory(ABCD Matrix) and simulated in frequency and time domain using Matlab program. The output voltage of pulse were obtained to 2.5kHz, 1.8kV. Output pulse voltage increases as $L_m$ increases in low voltage circuit. In high voltage circuit, outer capacitors are related to frequency band pass characteristics.

  • We describe the characteristic of LVI test system and methods to detect the deformation of windings in the power transformers. As the front rise time of recurrent-surge generator pulse less than 1000ns and the peak value of pulse is about 500V, we have the good results of detecting winding deformation in the LVI test of transformer. And we discuss the application of LVI test method and the condition of RSG pulse through results of in one and three pole transformers under Lab. tests.

  • In this paper, it was investigated the characteristics of PD(partial discharge) pulse shapes in oil and the possibility of TF(Time-Frequency) analysis for the discrimination of air corona in on-site PD measurement of oil transformers. For the purpose, single and multiple discharges combined with oil discharges and air corona were generated and measured by use of artificial models through the HFPD pulse detector and the oscilloscope. PD pulse shapes were different according to the type of defects, especially including air corona- pulses. Also, through the TF analysis, data clusters could be classified each other in the TF Map, even in the case of multiple discharges. Therefore, it is known that TF analysis could be aprlied for the improvement of on-site PD measurement in oil transformers.

  • The pulsed power systems have been widely used many other countries and their new applications have been developed by many researchers, such as E/P(Electrostatic Precipitator) to remove the industrial dust, DeNOx/DeSOx power systems, ozone generators and power sources of the laser beam, etc. In this paper, we studied the cascading technique as a new technology consisted of two pulse transformers and obtained their experimental data and results. To obtain the high pulsed voltage adopted cascading technique, we designed our compact pulse generator and tested by adjusting the value of the load resistors to obtain high pulsed voltage with steep rising time and duration time. We explained their experimental results that obtained by adopting cascading technique. Also, we compared theoretical value with measured value obtained by using the cascading method.
